Re: What's on your desktop?
I got my new computer a few days ago and have been fairly pleased with Windows 7, though it's taking a while to adjust back after almost two years of using Ubuntu Linux. I'm sticking with a familiar desktop background for now, but it looks different with shortcut icons on it.

Thats a nice picture, how do you do that ?

Re: What's on your desktop?
Thanks, Chris. Do you mean how to take a screenshot? If you have a PC (and maybe even a mac, but I'm not sure about those) there should be a print screen button. It's probably in the upper right-hand corner and might be abbreviated to "prt sc" or something like that. Pressing that will copy an image of your desktop as it appears then onto the clipboard. To save it, paste the image using CTRL-V into an image file.

I don't have a mac either, but iirc then on macs you need to use the apple key.

on mac you have to go into the photo program and choose screenshot or something. Can't really remember, but it is the programm which pops up when you open a photo and then you just have to look in the toolbars area at the top line.
Re: What's on your desktop?
Just got myself a Mac. Such a big screen, 27inch. WOWZA. Still can't work out this screenshot thingy.
Just worked out how to cut and paste

I think there is a program which is called preview and if u click the toolbar or something you look for screen shot I think. then u choos either selection, window or screen. the program is the one that usually pops up when u are opening a picture.

Very nice. Such a pity though we are all stuck living in the unfashionable western arm.

Re: What's on your desktop?
Well my desktop is finally a little bit tidier- but not much. Everything on the righthand side is either my megaedit files (well some of them), Orwell's vid folders or the Forumshire animation work-in-progress! This place makes my desktop messy! (wallpaper is one of my own pics)

screenshots for mac
On mac: shift-command-3 for full screen
or: shift-command-4 to let you select an area.
the final will show up on your desktop. There's a lot of cool key combinations that for some reason aren't well advertised. Or you can just use preview.

Hats off to you Halfwise, not just out of envy for getting to do that, but for having a big enough pair to actually do it.

Re: What's on your desktop?
People have the wrong idea about hang gliding, it's done for the beauty, not adrenaline. If you do it properly, you should never feel that mad rush thrill seekers are looking for. Modern HG is all about safety and training, and it becomes something of a lifestyle; a subculture all its own.
I could go on for pages, but I should say the biggest danger is you become so engrossed in the intellectual challenge of chasing the unseen air that you forget to look around, which is a shame. When you do, you have to remind yourself that it's real.
And a glider is a lot easier to control than one of 'em stinky fell beasts.

Re: What's on your desktop?
Perhaps not Halfwise but still, you are at the end of the day suspended under a single wing in what looks like a sleeping bag far higher up than is required to become a splat if you suddenly head earthwards- beauty or not thats still got to require a fair bit of guts that first time you take a run and do the seemingly innatural act of throwing yourself off a very high cliff.

Re: What's on your desktop?
You realize when you drive a car down a two-lane highway you've got big hunks of metal zinging past you a few feet away at relative speeds that are far from healthy? And there's another unpredictable human in the equation, often at the rate of several per minute. You teeter on the edge of destruction each day, and the only thing that's keeping you alive is training...and safety regulations that are only a few decades old.
In comparison hang gliding isn't quite as bad as you think, you're just not used to it.
Yes, the fatal accident rate is higher than driving a car, but none of that happens when up high. (unless you fly into a thunderstorm or fly into someone else, the wings are engineered to hold together and maintain level flight.) It's only the ground that kills you. The following is a statement of deep truth: Altitude is NOT to be feared.
Anyway, the dream of flight is out there, you just need to take lessons, and have a serious commitment. It's not like going out for a day of bungee jumping.

I dont drive and the closest motorway is a ferry journey and 20 miles away. But I take your point.
Never seen the point in bungee jumping- if I ever decide to jump off a bridge lat thing I would want is to be bounced back up again before the bottom!

Well, if when the Hobbit movie comes out we find Smaug is wandering around with an axe embedded in his head we'll send an agent over to sneak a bungee around your ankle before you leap. The world just wouldn't work right if you weren't around to keep an eye on things anymore. Just not enough people left who care.

Re: What's on your desktop?
Nice one Halfwise, does it get cold so high up?, what happens if its super windy, do you get blown off course? knowing my luck I would end up landing in a cow pat, horizontally. Thats why I keep my feet on the ground at all times, but my head in the clouds. I like the thought of HG but, I dont like drafts round the trossocks much. But hats off to you, you brave person in the sky.
