A place to pose question, cunundrums or riddles, or whatever you like. Doesn't have to be Tolkien related although to get things started my question is.

What age was Pippin during LotR's? scratch

I assume we can't just look up the answers via Google or the books? Razz

I believe Pippin was 29, since IIRC he was four years from his "coming of age". Smile

Pippin said he was 29 in the first chapter of RotK when he was talking to Bergil, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. Wink

Very Happy I believe Eldo you are thinking of his conversation with Beregond, in which Pippin says, "I am still little more than a boy in the reckoning of my own people, and it will be four years before I "come of age", as we say in the Shire."

But your still wrong he is not 29!

One --- or maybe two, if we count that fox in the shire???? I think the eagle spoke to Gandalf.

Edit: Whoops! No fox in The Hobbit! Laughing And I don't mention the Ents. I guess they may be kind of humanoid? Shrugging

Edit: And could Shelob talk to Gollum???

Forumshire Quizland Empty Three talkers?

Post by The Wobbit A Parody Fri Oct 28, 2011 5:21 am

I may be wrong, but The Hobbit features talk from the following non-humanoids who could not talk in LOTR:

1. Giant Spiders
2. Wargs
3. Giant Eagles (Good one, Anne! I would have forgotten it!)

It's interesting the Smaug could talk, but the Balrog didn't (and didn't fly, either). Not the same thing, though. Also, Anne mentions the Ents, who DID talk in LOTR, but the angry Mirkwood trees did NOT talk in The Hobbit.

Tinuviel, your answer was insightful and to-the-point, and I cannot disprove it.

What creatures am I forgetting?

The eagles talk in both dont they? Gwahir talks to Gandalf when he's rescued from Orthanc, and one of them sings to Faramir and Eowyn when it brings the news of the fall of Sauron to them.

Shelob's forebear (Ungoliant) and descendants (in Mirkwood) could all talk so I don't think it's a huge leap to say that Shelob could too. study

It seems fair to assume that Shelob could talk, but was not quoted in the book. Although I had never envisioned her talking with Gollum, I assumed it was some sort of empathy, or one of Gollum's conversations with himself that he attributed to Shelob. Which is, I admit, a bit of a stretch.

Which members of the Fellowship do we never see smoking pipeweed in the books?

We definitely never see Boromir or Legolas smoking pipe-weed. I don't think we see Frodo or Sam doing it, though Sam likely would.
