Deep-fried Mars bars still make me queasy just thinking about them.

Its hot sugary melted chocolate and nougat bloated and swollen with a ton of soaked in added fat in a crunchy shell. Whats not to like Eldo?

And to think that you European types make fun of Americans for our unhealthy foods.

We are Scots, with regards cuisine we propably dont count as European.

But then the Fjordians eat rotten fish, and the French eat snails, frogs and horses, its best not to ask in east european countries if its a meat dish and Italians will cover anything in a sauce and eat it. And a bit like the mexicans they specialise in making one meal into several by just changing the shape of it but leaving all the ingredients the same.

OI! not only rotten fish! sheep heads, fish that has been hanging outside and dried for a year or so, dried fish but with added water making a very jellyfish consistence.... with brown cheese to eat and sirup.

Sorry Norc I obvouly undersold the array of, delightful, Fjordian dishes available.

edit add- and although I am not sure I really want to know the answer- why is your cheese brown?

komle or raspeball is also very awful... I mean, I can eat all the things above, but not this. It's flower in a ball.. boild I think. then bacon and bacon fat on top.. tastes like wet paper. only the bacon and butter is good.

the cheese is brown because it's boiled down, caramelizing the sugar in the milk. sooo goooooooood!!!

Do you add sugar to the milk or just its natural sugars? (Bloody hell now youve got me asking cookery questions I may as well have a pinny on and be wearing one of these- )

Ooooh I love ball! Potetball, there are so many variation. Though it is a pretty odd dish, helps to have grown up with it. It's grated potatoes and flower mashed together in the shape of a ball with a piece of meat in the middle, then boiled for a while with meat. Served with meat, bacon and sometimes sausages and sometimes for whatever reason, in restaurants and such, ...potatoes! (Why!?)
At least that's the type that we use around here, other places they make them with fish, or other types of flour and oat meal even.
Mom is an expert, and each Christmas day we gather at her house and she makes potetball with left over pinnekjøt from Christmas dinner the day before. Yuuuuuuummmmmm!

I am not sure you should expect it taste like candy, but we like it. Apparently you might find some Norwegian made cheese under the name of "Ski queen".

Pinnekjøt is salted and dried ribs of lamb (or sheep), which is steamed for 6-7 hours or so. The in-laws throw in a rib or ten from deer too, also quite yummy.

Finnbiff is a brandname for reindeer steak. Which is offensive to the Sami people because they were called Finns back in the not so good old days. (Which have also given name to the municipal of Finnmark and the country Finland, if I am not terribly mistaken.)

Finn is also a relativly common first name, and a verb meaning "find", and the source of many really really bad jokes.

I don't suppose there's a chance you would tell one of those jokes for us? (even a mild one?)

We have a lot of people here whose ancestors come from Finland, Sweden and Norway. In the old days the only things the Suomi Hall and and Sons of Norway Hall could agree on was that Swedes were not allowed.

But the Finnish people still call themselves "Finns" with pride. What do they call themselves over there, and do I need to be careful what I say when I travel?
