Shadow in the West Role-Playing Character Descriptions Empty Shadow in the West Role-Playing Character Descriptions

Post by Lorient Avandi Fri Aug 12, 2011 7:14 am

Here you can post all your character's information.I.E. name, country, back-story, appearance, occupation, etc.
P.S. Story begins shortly after Frodo leaves Bag-End. Let's go with around the time he encounters Tom.

Name: Elidar
Race: Men (Descended from the Numenor, may have either Rohan or Elvish blood recognizable in his blonde hair, which virtually no Gondorians have)
Country:Gondor
City: Minas Tirith
Occupation: Citadel Guard swordsman & moderate bowman
Appearance: Lets just say he looks like Irolas (my profile pic), except with no cloak and has a bow and quiver.
Back-Story: Elidar has continued his family's tradition of serving as a member of the Tower Guard. He has served excellently and honorably for the years that he has served. In light of Mordor's recent acts of war and the Treason of Isengard, Lord Denethor has temporarily disbanded members of the Citadel Guard to serve as special forces, captains, and other low-ranking officers. Elidar was one of these. He is now serving as a low-officer and is now preparing to move out to reinforce Osgiliath with the rest of his battalion...

name :Halthir
country : Dunland
town : Daeruin
occupation : Scout
appearance: Red haired and rugged.

Halthir was the chief scout for his village. When the hunters went out he led them, scouting both prey and always on the watch for the hated Strawheads. Then Saruman took an interest in his people and hearing Saruman's promises and realising the truth of his words, and the clarity with which the plight of the Dunlendings was explained at the hands of the usurpering horsemen Halthir devoted himself to Saruman's cause and the overthrow of Rohan. Rumours have been rife and expetancy building that it will not be long now until Saruman gives the Dunlendings their chance to reclaim what is rightfully theirs and avenge generations of abuse, humilation and deaths at the hands of the Strawheads. But as preparations for war are made Halthir learns that he is not to go east to meet their ancient foes afterall but rather has been hand picked to be a scout for a contingency of Half-orcs and Goblin-men and to go north, into the unknown, to a land he has never heard of before by the odd name of Shire.

Name: Rosa Mugwort
Country:Bree
Town: Bree-land
Occupation: Chamber maid
Appearance: Sixteen year old girl hobbit. She is overweight, even for a hobbit (and prone to laziness).
Back Story: She is an inquisitive girl who works at The Prancing Pony. A girl who takes too much notice of goings-on in Bree that a sensible lass should ignore, and a less lazy girl would not have time to bother with in the first place. Strange folk have begun to be seen in the Bree-land and aroundabouts. Her story starts a few days before the unexpected arrival of four hobbits from the Shire.

Shadow in the West Role-Playing Character Descriptions Empty Re: Shadow in the West Role-Playing Character Descriptions

Post by Baingil Sat Aug 13, 2011 4:05 am

Name: Baingil Randir
Race: Sindarin Elf (parents migrated to Mirkwood around the same time as Thranduil)
Country: Mirkwood
Location: Thranduil's Court
Occupation: Chief Guard of Mirkwood
Appearance: My profile pic is a drawing someone made of a description of Baingil. Close enough.
Born: 1046 of the Third Age
Back-Story: I'll go ahead and copy from the other forum. Dramatic story, maybe, but I was a new RPer at the time. Hopefully it won't be too bad!

As a child, Baingíl lived in the area around Dol Guldur with her parents and one older brother. As the mysterious shadowy evil grew in the forest, her brother (who had a rather wild temper) correctly blamed the Necromancer for their troubles. He tried to drive the Necromancer out with help from other young elves in the area, but Sauron, even at this stage, was quite able to deal with the small band of elves. All died, including Baingíl's brother. After this, the forest held too many bad memories and too much evil for Baingíl's parents, so they took their young daughter and fled the forest. They refused to settle in any one place. They left their family name behind and began to use the name Randír, or Wanderer. When she grew up, Baingíl continued to travel with them. She saw a great deal of Middle Earth during her travels with her parents - everywhere from Lothlorien, to Imladris, to Minas Tirith (from a distance). Baingíl's parents' spirits improved, but never fully recovered. About TA 3014, Baingíl and her parents met a group of elves bound for the Undying Lands. They had a long conversation. The elves said that the time of the elves was over, and dark times were ahead. Baingíl's parents knew that the pain of losing their son - unhealed still, after all the centuries - would be healed in the Undying Lands, and they had no wish to experience dark times. Baingíl, however, hated the thought of leaving Middle Earth to its fate. She had been a very small child at the time of her brother's death, and had borne less pain than her parents; and what pain there was turned into a deep and bitter hatred for the darkness that had killed her brother and darkened her beloved home, which she had heard tales of from her parents. She decided that she would rather remain in Middle Earth and fight the darkness; if she died, she would only join her brother in the Halls of Mandos - nothing worse than that. The family went in opposite directions - the parents to Lindon, and Baingíl to Mirkwood. She promptly offered her services to the Elven-king Thranduil, and was offered a position on his guard. She accepted, hoping this would give her an opportunity to fight the evil things in the forest, and perhaps clear away some of the darkness from her home. She went on to train for the guard, then ended up becoming the Chief Guard of Thranduil.

Name: Tatharwen/Mel
Country: Lorien
Location: Somewhere at the foot of the Misty Mountains
Occupation: Minstrel
Description: Long, dark hair and bright green eyes, very calm and at peace. She has been married to her husband, Daeron, for countless years. However, when she learns that he has died during an ambush from orcs on the borders of their land, she is devastated and leaves for the Grey Havens alone, unable to find comfort in any living thing. By the time she crosses the Misty Mountains, she is on the brink of death from despair and fatigue, but right before she dies, the spirit of Luthien Tinuviel attaches herself onto Tatharwen's soul. She has a purpose back on earth, but finds that she can remember nothing about either previous lives. So now she wanders alone, confused and frightened, seeking a familiar face somewhere who can help her. The only word she can remember is mellon, and therefore calls herself "Mel."

Name: Odo Banks (no relation)
Race: Hobbit
Country:The Shire
City: Needehole
Occupation: Business Owner
Appearance: Handsome.
Back Story: Odo is a former rush cutter (from Rushock Bog) who made his fortune through good planning in his "Thatch Making" business, employing several worthy hobbits to do the work. He lives in a house in Needlehole with his wife, Belladonna (nee Bracegirdle), and two sons, Sandy and Brendon. At the time of Bombadil in the book, Odo has been hearing rumours of "strange sightings" in the North Farthing. He plans to prove the rumours are untrue. What with rumours of a "shadow rising" and "wars" in the south, and talk of "black clad horsemen" in Hobbiton, he can do without another rumour circulating about "trees that walk" further troubling the "peace of mind" of Needlehole folk. He will set out to prove this latter rumour's implausibility.

Name: Till Bumbleroot
Race: Hobbit (Fallohide)
Country:The Shire
City: Hobbiton
Occupation: Farmer
Appearance: He has a face like Frodo's, but he has brown hair and green eyes
Back-Story: Till has a pretty uninteresting back story, for all he did was grow up on a farm, learn to care for animals, produce crops, etc. But one day his father was kidnapped so he grabbed his bag of supplies (freshly packed from Mom) and an old rusty sword and lept out to Rohan, wherever that is.

Interesting, it's some kind of fairly free-form writing excercise.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play-by-post_role-playing_game

Or to quote myself from the fanfic collection (p. 48; see the link in Petty's sig):

This piece is even more distinct from the rest of the collection than the previous two. Lorient Avandi was the first member of Forumshire who was not previously a member of the Old Forum or Planet Tolkien, and when he proposed beginning a structured role-playing thread (that is to say, play-by-post role-playing, which usually does not depend on rolls of the dice) he had a different sense of what that meant than most of the forum. Lorient wanted a storyline set in Middle-earth proper, drawing on both book and movie lore but with nothing too flagrantly out of place. As such, most of the participants created new characters not based on their forum personas. The result was not exactly set in Forumshire but it overlaps and creates an interesting contrast to the direction most of the forum’s creative output ultimately went.

This style of role-playing is/was common on other Tolkien forums, both those wholly dedicated to the practice as well as some of the larger centers of regular Tolkien discussion (including the LOTR Plaza, Arwen-Undomiel.com, and TORC, to name just a few). Shadows in the West was not as structured or managed as one typically sees, though--it has more in common with free RP threads despite the nominal overarching plot.
