Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Welcome to the forum, Turembar! It's great to meet you and I'm glad you want to jump in feet-first. I took months to start posting actively after I first joined, so I'm always impressed by people who get it immediately. BTW, have you seen the most recent Planet of the Apes movie? I saw part of the 2001 version and also last year's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with the series in general.
Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Thankyou. I watched the original 'Planet of the Apes' for the first time last year & would definately recomend it. I thought the film had held up surprisingly well over time and found the story still interesting & the ape costuming convincing. Over the last few years I have been catching up with many Sci-fi films and series and when you do searches for people's lists of best Sci-fi films, you will almost always find the original film on the list. I have only seen bits of the others, but plan to see the latest one, as I had read some good reviews.

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Oh, hey Turembar! I'm Ally, probably the most constant poster here at forumshire. Feel free to join me in posting hilarious one line responses to practically everything-- or not, whatever!
I would have warned you that this is an amazingly weird place, but as some people have already so perfectly demonstrated in literally three posts, I'll wrap this up with a 'For Mrs Figg's eels!' and a warm welcome from myself!!
Edit: Wow, just reread that back to myself and cringed. My spontaneous posts are awful. Feel like I'm letting the team down here, sorry guys.

Danke,
I wouldn't worry about it too much. I imagine even Leo Tolstoy and Edgar Allen Poe had their off post days. 'Quoth the Raven... WTF?' etc.

He had a feather in his mouth when he dictated that line, meant to be 'quote' but the typist put down the 'thh' sound he made trying to get it off his tongue (it was a small feather-or a euphimism now I come to think about it).

Hi Norc,
No, I am afraid, not German. I lived there for almost 5 years and understand quite a bit, but have never been able to speak it well. I go back when I can, and on my last trip was very close to Liechtenstein, but never actually entered the country. If you live there, you are quite lucky! I think that area the most beautiful place on earth and it was the model for Tolkien's Misty Mountains.
Hi Tinuviel,
Well I think I got the first part but 'Finest Nose and Supplier of Buckie' has me stumped. A reference to wine ? And this Buckie stuff. I have read it many times here... Beer?

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Buckie is beer... to an extent- Queen Tin
Forgive me your majesty but I feel you may not be doing the wholseome bru that is buckie justice.
Turembar, let me elucidate for you.
Buckie is the well spring of everything Scottish- it puts the wind up your kilt and the fire in your fists. It makes you blissfully unaware and yet very crabbit.
It is sold as a Health Tonic, brewed (the Forumshire version at least) by Scotsdale Wizards and includes miruvor (well in a sort of homeopathy sort of way), it is the favoured drink of her Majesty the Queen (although dont let her hubby Beren hear that he is not to keen on buckie, a very sick man, and often angry, well with me anyway and dont get me started on that mutt of theirs. Because of Beren all Queen Tins buckie tastes of rasberry juice to fool him). Anyway, I digress. One of my own humble duties here is to serve as Her Majesty's Keeper of the Buckie Stores and Quality Control (I have a hands on approach to this bit of the job).
Buckie are also the proud sponsors of many Forumshire events, including the annual awards ceremony (which you might like to check out as it may clear up why certain people have certain titles like Most Respected or Finest Nose). Buckie also sponsor the Daily Purist and the News of the Pure, Forumshires Most Popular Newspapers, whatever that rag the Bugle or dubious mouthpiece State News might say.
And there you have it, buckie. Oh and for some reason I seem to have acquired a slight reputation for drinking rather a lot of buckie- but its my job whats a hobbit to do?!

Thank you Petty, although I disagree with you on one point: YOUR JOB IS NOT TO DRINK THE BUCKIE!

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
You can tell Petty that all you want, Your Maj, but I don't think it's going to get through the buckie haze.
Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Well it has to be tested, often, can't go sending sub-par buckie up to Royalty- that wouldn't be proper. And what if it was magically interferred with by evil republic loving terrorists? No I couldn't live with myself if I couldn't be 100% assured it was safe for her Maj- I am merely a humble servant performing my duties.

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
I feel like Butterbur when he has been given too much information at once. Just kind of standing there blinking.
But I can chip away at it. So tell me please what 'crabbit' means ? I usually get contextual clues, but this one is slippery. Does it have multiple meanings ?

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Dont worry Turembar, it'll all make sense eventually, maybe...
Crabbit is a Scots word, its basic meaning is someone who is foul of mood, easily annoyed and angered by things and not afraid to display it on their face or in words.
Being crabbit is part of being a Scotshobbit and is a natural response to life. It was thanks to the discovery of crabbit mathmatics that Scots are renowned for inventions and engineering (there is nothing like finding everything in life makes you crabbit to inspire new ways to fix it, these inevitably never quite work properly, leading to further, higher crabbit levels than before thus spurring on more invention).
Crabbitness however is universal, unfortuntely other races have not always appreciated the subtle strengths to be gained in being a crabbit bastard. To this end I have done my best to make everyone crabbit at some point, for their own good, some people here however are more suited to crabbitness than others, especially it seems Mrs Figg! (However in fairness in that regard she does get her own back in inducing crabbit levels in me on the Doctor Who thread) and some, like Ally and Norc and Squach are simply to young and cool to understand the nuances of crabbitness.
Crabbit levels can also be detected and dangerous crabbit waves captured by specialist crabbit meters, although dangerously high crabbit levels, such as those brought about by watching Legolas fire arrows whilst surfing on a shield down a staircase, can cause meters to explode, releasing dangerous levels of crabbittness into the atmosphere. For this reason the NotP carries in every edition the latest crabbit meter levels in response to news from TH set in case of an immenent explosion.
Bet you wish you hadn't asked now.
