I believe it. How can anyone say what speed time flows at or the things we see actually are as we view them ? I believe our brains do perceive things how 'it' wants to.

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
I have a theory on this.
In my misspent youth I tried a variety of hallucinogenic substances and one thing they all had in common were massive distortions in the perception of the passage of time.
A seeming million different observations and thoughts can be made in the tick of a second hand, and hours can disappear in the blink of an eye. A drop of rain can fall forever and a passing breeze linger for hours.
The only other time I have had such a slow down in time when not under the influence of something was the only car crash I was ever in, which by rights I should not have walked away from had time not slowed.
The car flipped, 360, and when it was at 180 it came down and bounced first on the roof right where I was sitting.
When it was all over and the car had come to rest, fortunately the right way up, my head was as far between my knees as it could go, and the roof was pressing against the top of it.
What saved me was the perception during the crash that time was slowed- small details became important and it allowed me to get out of the way of the collapsing roof in time, or my head would have been compacted into my spine and my spine through my arse.
So what I have concluded is that the brain is capable in extremity of production a similar chemical to the ones in hallucinogens that effect the perception of time- and that in fact it is not time which is effected in either case but the brains ability to massively increase the amount of detail and information it is processing moment to moment.
Normally our brain is quite lazy, it only really puts detail into what we are focused on and sort of fills the rest in as background.
But when its survival and a tiny detail in that background might be the difference between life nd death it pays attention- we get flooded with far more information in a moment than we normally do, and from the point of view of perceiving that extra information creates the impression time has slowed.
That's my theory based on personal observation anyway.

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
I know the sense of time slowing down with a massive adrenalin dump. I've never been in as bad a wreck as Petty's, but I've had a wheel fly off at 70 mph on a mountain road, and many other closes calls with cars, trucks and large animals, and I've taken some falls that should by rights have killed me.
It is amazing how quickly the brain can process information in times like that. Like Petty, I'm pretty sure it's saved my life at least once.
But I'm not convinced that I'm processing more information at those times. At times like that I find that my whole world gets really small and focused. If somebody is talking to me or the dog is barking in the back seat, I'm completely oblivious.
I suspect that at least for me there's no more information being processed. It's just that the scary sh*t in front of my face is being processed at near the speed of light, because nothing else matters!

I've never had any sort of experience like that (and I can't say it's on my bucket list ) but I am trusting your judgement. It's interesting, the things the brain can do when put to the test.
And Azriel, was the guardian angel thing sarcasm? Or do you really believe in them? Just wondering.

Yikes Petty, I think I should go for therapy just from reading your story. And David , I always think the H Is for Honor I think I agree with you. I have been in very life threatening circumstances and I feel like a file is opened and a precise bit of knowledge is releases and if your neurons are fast enough you can act on that info.
Hello Arwen.

Yep, been in a number of close shaves myself, and time definitely does appear to slow down. Definitely a focus on important detail, and perhaps much faster processing that packs more in and makes things seem to slow down.

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
No sarcasm from moi Ive had to many weird stuff happen to me thats made me believe there are guardian Angels. Ive had incidents where I should easily have been a gonner, Ive had odd vibes, I sense things, There are things I think, "oh yeah?" but, on the whole, I keep an open mind & yes, I do believe in guardian Angels. People can say Im a naive fool, thats ok, Ive no proof either way whether its mysticism or science/biology but, it soothes my soul, so Im sticking with it I 'feel' things, so you can say Im spiritual, I believe in the power of Nature, the seasons, animal behaviour, so Im a Druid or witch ?? Im just me, I cant be anything else.

It's wonder most of us made it through childhood. I attribute it to flexible bones. Once those puppies harden up it's good bye to the charmed life...

Pettys had lots of practice slowing down time. Everytime its his turn to buy drinks it takes two hours to open his sporan strings.

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
http://www.themillions.com/2013/03/the-weird-1969-new-wave-sci-fi-novel-that-correctly-predicted-the-current-day.html
Stand on Zanzibar is that rarity among science fiction novels — it really made accurate predictions about the future. The book, published in 1969, is set in the year 2010, and this allows us to make a point-by-point comparison, and marvel at novelist John Brunner’s uncanny ability to anticipate the shape of the world to come. Indeed, his vision of the year 2010 even includes a popular leader named President Obomi — face it, Nate Silver himself couldn’t have done that back in 1969!
Let me list some of the other correct predictions in Brunner’s book:
(1) Random acts of violence by crazy individuals, often taking place at schools, plague society in Stand on Zanzibar.
(2) The other major source of instability and violence comes from terrorists, who are now a major threat to U.S. interests, and even manage to attack buildings within the United States.
(3) Prices have increased sixfold between 1960 and 2010 because of inflation. (The actual increase in U.S. prices during that period was sevenfold, but Brunner was close.)
(4) The most powerful U.S. rival is no longer the Soviet Union, but China. However, much of the competition between the U.S. and Asia is played out in economics, trade, and technology instead of overt warfare.
(5) Europeans have formed a union of nations to improve their economic prospects and influence on world affairs. In international issues, Britain tends to side with the U.S., but other countries in Europe are often critical of U.S. initiatives.
(6) Africa still trails far behind the rest of the world in economic development, and Israel remains the epicenter of tensions in the Middle East.
(7) Although some people still get married, many in the younger generation now prefer short-term hookups without long-term commitment.
(8 ) Gay and bisexual lifestyles have gone mainstream, and pharmaceuticals to improve sexual performance are widely used (and even advertised in the media).
(9) Many decades of affirmative action have brought blacks into positions of power, but racial tensions still simmer throughout society.
(10) Motor vehicles increasingly run on electric fuel cells. Honda (primarily known as a motorcycle manufacturers when Brunner wrote his book) is a major supplier, along with General Motors.
(11) Yet Detroit has not prospered, and is almost a ghost town because of all the shuttered factories. However. a new kind of music — with an uncanny resemblance to the actual Detroit techno movement of the 1990s — has sprung up in the city.
(12) TV news channels have now gone global via satellite.
(13) TiVo-type systems allow people to view TV programs according to their own schedule.
(14) Inflight entertainment systems on planes now include video programs and news accessible on individual screens at each seat.
(15) People rely on avatars to represent themselves on video screens — Brunner calls these images, which either can look like you or take on another appearance you select — “Mr. and Mrs. Everywhere.”
(16) Computer documents are generated with laser printers.
(17) A social and political backlash has marginalized tobacco, but marijuana has been decriminalized.

I'm not that impressed. # 1, 2,4,5,7,8,10,12,13,15,16 are rather standard science fiction themes; mainly from the 70's rather than late 60's though.

I'd need to read the book. With prophecy fiction, it's not how much you get right, it's the ratio of right to wrong. I'll admit though, there weren't many people predicting China to become an economic world power in those days. Rather the opposite, if I remember.

I may have the 70's mixed up with the 80's, though I do seem to remember a lot of chinese socialist dominated earths, based mainly on birth rate projections.

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
Yeah, the population was the thing that everybody was worrying about back then. And then in the 70's somebody got the bright idea that US industry could make sh*tloads of money by selling them all cheap American manufactured goods, or (another bright idea) letting Chinese laborers do the low-value part of the manufacturing while our industry kept the lions share of the profits. Brilliant!
