just thought I would share my love of art history and show you vids and bits and pieces I find. some people remember exactly where they were when Kennedy got shot or other momentous occasions, but I remember exactly where I was the day I first saw a pre-Raphaelite painting. Laughing

Art thread!!!

My happy place is a cafe in Ålesund and a cosy art gallery and antique shop wall-in-wall. My friend Rose runs the cafe and her boyfriend runs the gallery. He makes icons, restores old paintings and deals with antiques. His father makes the most stunning landscapes paintings. She is the only one who can made a caffe mocca just right, give me that and a piece of cheesecake and it's Nirvana. I could simply live there. Food for the soul and food for the body.

Oh yeah, coffee bars and such have been a thing for some years on. I'm off the so-called "caffe latte-generation".

I had no doubts about coffee bars, but thought cheesecake was pretty american, and Italians for one would never adulterate their coffee with chocolate. Wouldn't surprise me that Norwegians would do it.

there is a drink in Italy called a Marocchino (Moroccan) it consists of a glass cup with a layer of liquid chocolate at the bottom, then a shot of espresso, then foam, then more chocolate on top. the Italians call it Moroccan so as to disassociate themselves from it. cunning plan.

We also know about cookies, brownies, muffins and cupcakes.

Blame Marocco! Clever Italians.

This is a really interesting thread, Mrs Figg.  Most of the little I know about the Pre-Raphaelites I found out either from you in various threads on here  or after reading about people who argue Tolkien was influenced by them. Out of curiosity, do you feel that there's any merit to the idea of a connection between Tolkien and the Pre-Raphs?

Oh, and cheesecake is delicious (I've asked for a chocolate chip cheesecake for each of my last several birthdays) and the Cheesecake Factory is definitely the best large-scale chain restaurant that I'm familiar with.

yes Eldo I think there is a strong connection. The Pre-Raphs were based in Oxford and Tolkien would have ben surrounded by their art, he would have been most influenced by William Morris who wanted to live in a more artisan based mediaeval atmosphere far away from the industrial Revolution.

Making my way through Julia. Amazing insights and stunning beauty captured so perfectly. I have always loved you, you know. It's a sensibility you exude, and it reminds me why I first fell in love with you, discernible even when I first encountered you in Bree to begin with. Off to sleep, romantic realm of sleep, but I'll be back. cheers
