All moons are satellites, but why do you say our moon isn't really a moon?
After all, it was called "Moon" before any other moons were even imagined.
Hardly seems fair, does it?

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
It depends who you ask a check of google has just showed me!
Our moon is classified as a 'natural satellitte'. It is also a 'primary'. Which may or may not mean its also a moon.
'Formally classified moons include 173 planetary satellites orbiting six of the eight planets'- wiki
Exactly how they decide to classify something a moon or a natural satellite I can't seem to find out. But apparently a bunch of things formally called moons are now planetary satellittes.

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
I think anything that has a halfway stable orbit around any planet is a planetary satellite.
If it's something that humans (or aliens I suppose) didn't stick up there, it also belongs to the subgroup of "natural planetary satellite".
Beyond that, I think astronomers like to argue about how big and how stable and symmetrical an orbit it takes for a natural planetary satellite to join the elite club called "Moon".
I would hope that our moon has permanent membership in the club though.

As far as I know there's no difference. "Natural satellite" is just the more science-y term for "moon". Kafria could probably shed some light on this though.

the Moon is a Moon because its the Moon. Its THE MOON!!

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
Yes but it was named the moon by uneducated primitive people without the benfit of university degrees Mrs Figg. Since then these primatives have been shown to have been wrong and therefore the moon is a natural sattelite, or maybe a moon....

I wonder what that makes me, much less Petty.- Eldo
Full of wisdom to impart to others Eldo? (and certainly not the result of sitting up all night drunk on buckie.)
I think I must have developed a case of 'Suprise Telepathy' (an occasional buckie side-effect)-could have sworn I just heard Ally talking to herself.

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
You people seem to have nothing better to do. You know, due to recent staff decapitatings recently at my recently acquired Gummy Bear mines, I need some hard workers... Do you enjoy long hours of slightly dirty work? For sensible wages? A preference for plain solid food and plain simple water? You do! Well, come and work for me. [Conditions will become even better (I'm sure) when the economy picks up and I'm not so short of funds...] What do you think, my idle friends? Why not take a chance? It'll be beneficial -- and give you something respectable to do.

Re: Oddities, curiousities and strangness in history
Mm.... there is that nice little boutique in Cramhobbit Street, Needlehole... which I hear might be vulnerable to thugs and ruffians... and if that ever were to be the case, well, then I guess I could help out the current owners by buying them out... at a reasonable price, of course.... I am partial to fashionable clothes and accessories, now that i come to think on it...
