Re: Future releases
I've heard a lot about the Millennium trilogy (especially since I started working in a bookstore) but I've never actually read it. I know vaguely that it's a series of crime novels with a Swedish film adaptation a few years back and an upcoming American film adaptation, but that's about it. While I was at Rise of the Planet of the Apes the other day, though, I was watching the trailers. There were too many horror trailers for my taste, and while I initially thought this would be another one, the song caught my attention.
The punk/industrial remix of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song bothered me and my brother a bit (we both used to listen to that song all the time) and he was quite vocal about his disapproval even in the theatre, but after listening to it again I find it pretty catchy. The remix is done by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, who is apparently branching out into film score composing. So while the trailer tells me nothing about the film or the story, I'm surprisingly excited and want to see it now.
Also, I like Daniel Craig. Sue me.

Re: Future releases
I've read the books and they are superb and I've seen the film (original-subtitled) and it too was superb- why Hollywood feels the need to remake a recent film that is excellent anyway is beyond me. Surely Americans can read subtitltes- things aren't that bad over there surely?

Re: Future releases
I don't suspect most Americans would enjoy subtitles very much, but I'm used to them from watching subbed anime. I would like to read the books before seeing either movie adaptation. I'll admit that my first reaction to a Hollywood remake of a recent foreign film was the same as yours, Petty, but David Fincher has impressed me enough that I'm not prepared to dismiss this as mere Hollywood garbage without seeing it.
In any event, I might pick up a copy of the first book tomorrow. We're going on vacation and I have an employee discount anyway.

Re: Future releases
I'm not saying it will be garbage- just pointless when the books are set in Sweden, all the charcaters are from there and there is a very recent and very good film of it. I don;t see th epoint besides pandering to an American viewpoint that everything should be adjusted and altered to suit them and their tastes. Seems crazy to me, you just lose out on different flavours to things if all you ever get to see is your own cultures stuff.

Re: Future releases
I have to agree, Petty, though I still want to see this version. I'll definitely have to hunt down the Swedish originals after reading the books though. They got a limited release in the US so I'm sure I can order them online if nothing else.

Re: Future releases
Honestly, Tintin looks pretty weird. It's probably because I'm unfamiliar with the original mythology (the only Tintin story I've ever read was the horrendously racist one where he goes to the Congo, which sort of put me off the whole series), but I'm not really clear from the trailers what the movie is actually about. My December movie schedule is already a bit crowded, anyway.
Re: Future releases
Bradd Pitt is in Glasgow (which is um doubling for somewhere in America for some reason) to shoot zombie flick World War Z. According to the press Angelina Jolie will be joining him, which puts ME within 70 miles as the crow flies of Angelina Jolie! This may be a problem, given the court order that judge gave me, as I'm pretty sure that puts me inside the exclusion zone!!

Re: Future releases
Petty, I'm sure you'll love this news: Ridley Scott is going to make a new Blade Runner movie. I'm not sure if it's a sequel (why? ), prequel (dear God ), or reboot (ugh ) yet, but I foresee a drastic increase in crabbit levels around Forumshire.
Re: Future releases
why? Please not a remake- I mean why remake a classic? Maybe however he will do a same universe story but not a remake. He is doing the Aliens prequal at the moment if it turns out to be a mess we will know what to expect! I was talking the other day with a friend about remakes and we could not see the point in remaking an already good film when there are out there potentially good films to remake that never made a name first time out for one reason or another and deserve a second go. I realise commercially remaking a film everyone knows the name of generates immediate recognition but thats usually followed by immediate contempt upon viewing.

Re: Future releases
Another remake of it? Come on think of something new people! Sounds to me like they are sitting about with a lot of very expensive 3D equipment and an increasing lack of audience appetite for it trying to think up films to remake that were heavy on sfx that would suit 3D. Give it up within ten to fifteen years they will have pefected 3D without the glasses and you will be left with a pile of cinema curious no one wants to watch.

Money. I can't help but wonder if the flop that was Robin Hood made Ridley Scott decide to turn his early films into money cows that he could milk during a long semi-retirement instead of making new movies. And yes, this is baseless speculation.
