Re: Stupid Questions
is the kiwi bird named after the kiwi fruit or is the kiwi fruit named after the kiwi bird?
Re: Stupid Questions
Good question! Furthermore did New Zealanders get the nickname of Kiwis from the fruit or the bird?

Re: Stupid Questions
No, it was as you said before, the fruit (which is native to China and not NZ, which I also hadn't known) was named after the bird in 1959. Before that it was called the Chinese Gooseberry. I should have added a link.Norc wrote:yes, BUT does it refer to the bird? or the kiwis (new zealanders) a place? what? and where the birds named after the fruit?Radaghast wrote:And I just found out that the proper name for the fruit is "kiwifruit".Norc wrote:the bird, since the bird is from new zealand.

Good to see a person after David and Halfwise heart. It does kind of show of what they were getting at, I guess. Asking questions leads to conversations. And I didn't know either, but now I know.
The kiwifruit was named after the kiwi bird by a New Zealand kiwifruit exporter.
The Kiwi bird is from a maori word imitating the birds call. Et onomatopoetikon, om du vil.

It is Dave. Partly my norwegian education seeping through again, but I was mostly thinking Norc might have been through it in norwegian class.
It's quite multilingual though.

Re: Stupid Questions
Speculative question, but as I wondering, if Frodo had really died at Shelobs Lair- would Sam have made it to Mt Doom alone with the RIng?

Re: Stupid Questions
I think he might have had more mental obstacles in his way. His got a big heart so, more fun for the Ring to inject its poison. Sam would have been more susceptible as he is kind & easy going, & thats how it is in real life. If you are generous spirited you get shit on more, if your a bit cold hearted you get by ! So I think his journey would be tougher, I think he's got the determination & bravery but, would his resolve weaken ? Im going with.....YES, sam will do it....He's also got the love for Frodo, the others, his homeland to spur him on so, Im going with yes, (after all that )

Re: Stupid Questions
He does quite quickly reject the Ring when he gets visions of ordering the whole world into a garden, but then he had only just got the Ring, given time and ever closer proximity to its master I am not sure how he would have got on, and he also doesnt have it long enough to be burdened by its actual physical effects, although he is shocked by just how heavy it is round his neck.
But I think the deciding factor would be his motivation- without Frodo to care for would he have been so selfless?

Re: Stupid Questions
I agree Frodo was what encouraged Sam onwards but, I think Frodo also represented all the things Sam holds dear ? Frodo came from The Shire, they both love rivers, fields, fauna & flora ( nice girls !) Sitting in the pub having a smoke & a chat, etc, I think those warm memories can still encourage you to go on even if you lose something so close to your heart ?

Re: Stupid Questions
Maybe. I say maybe because there is a comment Tolkien makes about Sam in Letters which is quite harsh- and basically amounts to his love of Frodo being his saving grace and the only thing that stops Sam becoming like most other hobbits- set in their ways, narrow minded and full of certainty about their own rightness and local wisdom- just like his Gaffer in fact. He even comments that Sam has a cockiness and self assuredness that if not tempered by his devotion to Frodo could have worked against him. Would that side to him perhaps have come out under the influence of the Ring and robbed of Frodo?

Re: Stupid Questions
Yes Petty, it could. Depends on the strength of the person ? A lot had happened to Sam along the way & a person can change can he not ? Not everything is set in stone ? Hobbits were meant to be real people, showing real emotions etc as real people do so, maybe there's a chance ?

Re: Stupid Questions
Oh I think there is always a chance, and I genuinely dont have an answer, it was just a thought which occurred to me, a bit of speculation. Id have loved to have asked Tolkien what he thought would have happened though.
I think its hard to say with Sam as we always see him somewhat defined by his relationship with Frodo so that its hard to imagine him without that.

Re: Stupid Questions
True, At the begining of our "relationship" with Sam, we see someone who likes to listen to others,in the Inn, praps secretly likes the gossip ? We see he can be sneaky & an "ear wagger", as Gandy catches him outside the window pretending to do gardening when really he's trying to have a listen.

Re: Stupid Questions
Ayup...
I think Sam could have made it, but only just. Sams 'Saving Grace' may just have been his fear of the Gaffers wrath (more than Gandalfs in fact ?) if he hadn't done good by Frodo. Who after all according to the Gaffer was a very well appointed Gentlehobbit, whom the Gamgees were proud to serve. Mind you, when sam gives the ring back to Frodo, doesn't he say that had Sauron caught him with the ring, he'd have 'Cowed him right quick' ? so even Sam had his reservations !

It makes me wish that we had a 'Tales of the Shire' Book too. I'll bet Merry and Pippins section would have made good reading !
