Think it was the 75th anniversary edition. Has some detailed maps in there too which are cool.

{{ Cant be same time as the paperbacks with similar covers then (think they were US editions as they belonged to a US navy family) as that was back in the 80's - maybe the anniversary edition delibretly went back to using a Tolkien illustration from ealrier editions.
Actually talking about US Navy one of theodd thngs about is that I knew of noone Scottish who had read or even heard of LotR's back then, yet I knew lots of Americans who knew of it, and many had copies.
Seems it took off more in the US than in its home turf. Possibly due to it being adopted by the hippy movement. }}

It is the 50th anniversary edition. Published in 2004.
