What's interesting is the choice to make it clearly settled territory. Aside from the little red house note how the trees define rectangles of land. It would have been much easier for the artist to produce random trees.

{{ That arrangement of trees is really common in the UK, especially in England. Its what hapens when you take a massive forest, chop 99% of it down for farm land and whats left tends to border the fields, creating rectangles of trees, or little copses in field corners or around paths and roads.
Any idea if its based on a  real location Az? Could be Switzerland.

that tree pattern is common everywhere...but only if inhabited within the last generation. There's not enough houses there to justify it.

Now that's a proper western landscape! I don't know what's going on with the ordered trees in that first painting. I read that Bierstadt compiled sketches with little regard for accurate colour or representation of real locations. Perhaps the orderly trees were some kind of unnatural fusion?
I read that Bierstadt was one of the last of the Hudson River school of art: although he's clearly on the stormier, more Romantic side of that movement.

The peaks in these actually remind me a bit of Stardock, from Fritz Lieber's short story. Not because of a visual similarity, just because it looks so remote and inaccessible.

ooh they are both stunning paintings, I particularly love the shaft of light on the lake in the second one and the distant white peaks in both the paintings. gorgeous.

As far as I know Petty he did paint real locations but sorta shooshed them up a bit ?

but you know what?  Looking at the light on the mountain framed by clouds in that second one, and looking at the light on the clouds....there was some realism he was willing sacrifice for effect.  This may be why his scenes look so dramatic.

It would be nice to have that synced to an image of the waves. But people were talking about how beautiful it sounds...I think it was an unfortunate choice of tonality (not that the artist likely had a lot of room to work with). It would be beautiful if it had the high ethereal sound of a glass harmonica.

Speaking of current circumstances, the Trump administration has banned most travel between the US and the EU, with Britain exempted. Other than Britain not being part of the EU, can anyone patiently explain to me why a ban on the EU but not Britain makes sense?

I think it's because of speaking more or less the same language Brits are less different from Americans than the other countries, and in Trump world that makes Britain "safe" and anyone else "dangerous".
