If pubs have outdoor seating (somewhat spread out) then I'd say by all means go to the pubs.

We've had several places busted here for letting people get too dense even though it's outdoors. There seems to be some rule about including food that doesn't seem so clear, but that goes back to the old sandwich on sundays joke from New York city circa 1900. (not sure if I told this before).

Before Teddy Roosevelt became president he was chief commissioner for the New York police department, and it turns out he had a heavy puritanical streak. He insisted on enforcing a decades old law against serving alcohol on sundays, unless as part of a meal in a hotel. Suddenly every saloon had an upstairs bedroom for rent, and eventually a court test discovered that a sandwich legally constituted a meal. So the same sandwich would be sold multiple times, sliding back and forth across the bar. The joke is that somebody asked for a drink and the bartender replied "Can't help you because some idiot ate the sandwich and there ain't another on the whole block which ain't in use."

Halfy - I think that this is more of a longer term issue. Conservatives have a way of making countries go down a protectionist or nationalist route. With a heavy Conservative majority in the supreme court, even if the dems get back in to power a lot of what they may want to change may end up eventually in court and get overturned.

When demo then can't deliver on some promises, who gets elected instead? Then who drives domestic and foreign policy?

It still knocks me sideways to see it.  Since the Magna Carta was signed I'd be hard pressed to put a name to legislation in other countries.  I know Sinn Fein stopped throwing bombs and most of Europe is going more conservative and undergoing introspection concerning immigrants, but I can't put names to agreements and such.  It just amazes me people follow this whacked-out country so closely even in things that shouldn't affect them. But you are right - Trumpism may have been birthed during the rise of Brexit, but things exploded once he became ascendent.

I wish the idea of conservatives being more protectionist had gotten out sooner. Around here conservatives have been seen as more in favor of open borders (for trade, not immigrants) but that got turned on its head under Trump.

@Halfy, I am interested in the possible deterioration of female reproductive rights because what the US starts normally filters down to the rest of us. Since Trump got in power women's rights have taken a battering all over the world. Coincidence? I don't think so. Just his attitudes to p**** grabbing effects young men's minds around the world, makes it legit. If he sets his mind to stopping funding for contraception in Mexico or other 3rd world countres, the effects are devastating all round the world. His lying fake news has infected British politics and made the outrageous acceptable. He has degraded democracy for all of us.

Going back to my comments early on about the state of the virus and what we should or should not do, I am really starting to move to an opinion that we should have just let this damp thing burn out quickly at the start with as many vulnerable people shielded as possible.

If it had managed to get through 60-70% of the healthy population quickly, I wonder if we would be in a better position to protect vulnerable people and our economy (which means we can protect more people) than we will end up doing by the time we can get a vaccine in place... if that ever happens.

People are just too god damn stupid/selfish/ignorant for this to ever have worked here.

You're one of the few people with the credentials to say just let the virus burn through the population.

I sort of feel that if you give people information, ban the obviously stupid things like indoor political rallies and bars, this will tap the brakes enough to keep from overwhelming the health care system. Of course you had to slam the brakes at first to bring it back under control, but now people have a feel for the thing. Let it smoulder so that people are nervous enough to get the vaccine when/if it comes.

The thing with herd immunity is the incredible risks, if you let it rip through the population just shielding the vulnerable. The problem is you don't know who are the vulnerable people until it is to late. I think herd immunity is madness. It shouldn't be either or, the UK could have been like New Zealand, why should innocent people have to play play Russian Roulette because of the Tory fuckwits?
