I think we used forum names initially but names didn't come a whole lot after our initial introductions.
Eldorion stopped feeling like a mere username or nickname a long time ago for me. It's not as closely tied to my identity as my real name, of course, but it's still meaningfully associated with me in my mind. A number of my closest forum friends over the years called me Jacob but a great many people whom I respect and like and have spent lots of time talking to over the years call me as Eldo (or, on the LOTR Plaza, EK and very occasionally Eldy) even when they know my real name.
Re: GUYS GUYS!! LOOK !! LOOK!! [2]
Double simulpost.
I attended the NY Tolkien Conference in Manhattan last July and met up with halfy and Radaghast the day before (both live in the area). Halfy also attended the conference itself. We invited davidjoneshoward and he seemed interested but I think his mother didn't want him meeting strange men from the Internet.

What's "A-U.com"? Shall have to go take a peek.
That's the spirit. A-U.com is arwen-undomiel.com:

Simulpost with Bungo: Yeah, Eldo was coming up for a Tolkien conference, we pulled Radagast down from Yonkers and we met in a bar then walked the HighLine. Not sure where we posted the pictures, it was over a year ago.
Simuled with your edit. Yep, the pictures were posted over a couple pages in the Tales from Home thread, starting here:

Oh, man. That sounds like fun. I don't think we've ever had a Tolkien Conference in the frozen tundra. Although, Eldo, you were in Duluth once but you didn't come down to the cities.
Man, nothing like living in the midwest to make you feel isolated.

I did plan to hit up the Twin Cities after Duluth but I ultimately didn't really feel up to it. :/ There's a decent chance I'll be out that way again eventually since Baingil is still at UMD (the UMD in Duluth that is, not my UMD in Maryland). Hopefully the Twin Cities will be on the agenda then.

Re: GUYS GUYS!! LOOK !! LOOK!! [2]
My lips are sealed.
NB Mythcon, the annual conference of the Mythopoeic Society, is held in a different location each year and sometimes comes to the Midwest. It's been in Michigan and Illinois in the past five years. I know that's not super close but at least it's not on the coasts. Unfortunately I can't find any information on their website or FB page about where it'll be next year.

Well, if anyone finds themselves up here for any reason I'd be more than happy to do a meet-up.

I'll say the same for this patch of frozen tundra. Alth, I am not actually there atm, but I can get photographic evidence of the snow

'Eldy', well you certainly are more of an elder than me when it comes to Tolkien geekery...
Don't you ever feel a little nervous tying your real-life name and life to your online persona though? I prefer to keep the two parts of my life as separate as possible (which is why I have yet to post a photo of myself to this forum) nothing against you guys I'd just rather leseen the chances of being doxxed, and keep my youthful online geekery harder for people to find out...
It's weird isn't it? I've 'known' most of you guys for more than four years by now and pretty well by the standards of online friendships, but if we happened to pass in the street I doubt I would recognise any of you...

og i remember this... omg it's so long ago, i was a wee baby 16? well well... i can only thank the weirdness of the-hobbit-movie thing and facebook connect for introducing me to the world of forums and you guys. and my name is Norc and i am a boy.Eldorion wrote:
This process accelerated in December 2011 when the Facebook Connect system that 99% of Bree-landers used to set up their accounts broke. I found a workaround to the problem after a couple days and this later became the default login method, but a number of people who joined here ultimately stuck around. Incidentally, this is why most people who posted on Bree have been known by both their real names and invented usernames over the year. The majority of people in 2011 used their real names (via their Facebook accounts) and only adopted screen names later.
*I should also note that there is some confusion in terminology because eventually some people began referring to the old forum as Bree because it was located at the same URL as the later forum. However, there is no continuity between the two forums. While some people who posted on the Old Forum did eventually become active on Bree, none did so initially, and the Bree community was its own original thing.
Re: GUYS GUYS!! LOOK !! LOOK!! [2]
well, i am a student and everyone i hang around with are between 20-27 so age is actually nothing that i conciously think about when hanging with people. age is just a number. hell, someone in my class is 41 and we treat her like she's 25, even though she has three children (one who's our age) and a husband. and 26 is not old for flying fucks sake!!! jeeez... we are young.Eldorion wrote:malickfan wrote:Maybe I'm just in denial about how old I am, recent events in personal life (or perhaps more accurately things I'm attempting to change) have put things in perspective, hard to believe I'm 26 next year (though my receeding hairline seems to think I'm nearer 46 ). But I've certainly enjoyed my time here, and I plan to stick around as long as I can, though my joining of the forum conicided with a gradual cooling of my hardcore Tolkien geekness (my attempt at leading a readthrough of The Hobbit didn't get very far did it? perhaps I'll try to put some notes together for another chapter or two soon...)
I'm certainly glad that you're still around. I sometimes forget that I'm less than three years younger than you but I think that's probably because I was so used to being the youngest person in the room in any given social context for so long. People still tend to assume that I'm about four years older than I really am but I sometimes have trouble thinking of myself as an adult.

also, in comment to what has actually been discussed now (i am always away being drunk when fun stuff happens here ) but i sense some kind of sadness about the hobbit and general tolkien era coming to an end, but don't be sad. it brought us together, and i am sure we can find lots of other stuff to nerd over like got or doctor who or tortoises ^_^ well well... i am glad the jackson-adventure has calmed down, although lotr (and the hobbit to some degree) will always have a special place in my heart and childhood/young adulecent (dunno how that's spelled sorry)..

If the grant I'm working on comes through I should be able to finally call my time my own and can see travelling to the Elder Lands. I'm still in favor of Oxenmoot as a focus. Only problem is I foresee we'd have a devil of time trying to squeeze into the Eagle and Child when that's going on.

Re: GUYS GUYS!! LOOK !! LOOK!! [2]
Oxonmoot is a Tolkien Society seminar held in Oxford in the fall of every year. The Eagle and Child is a pub where the Inklings often met, and is de rigour for Tolkien related drink meetings. So if we meet for Oxonmoot, I highly doubt we'll be the only ones with that idea. I'm sure the E&C it will be too packed for more than a couple to meet there.
Here's the last Oxonmoot: https://www.tolkiensociety.org/events/oxonmoot-2017/

Or we could skip Oxonmoot, but I like the idea of meeting in Oxford. Picked out a campground a couple years ago.

Re: GUYS GUYS!! LOOK !! LOOK!! [2]
My plan would be to use public transport (bus stops outside Oxford caravan and camping ground: http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/campsites/uk/oxfordshire/oxford/oxford), buy cheap-ass tent and sleeping bag at the Go Outdoor store in Oxford (http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/oxford) to be left with one of the locals, and it will be cheaper than hotel. Oh, and folding chair. Can't camp without a chair. Not clear if they allow campfires, if not may have to look elsewhere.
Or if going during Oxonmoot, they rent out dorm rooms for a very reasonable price. Youth Hostel if weather doesn't look cooperative and not during Oxonmoot.

Just found campfires are not permitted at that campsite. The hell with that. Need to look elsewhere.

Re: GUYS GUYS!! LOOK !! LOOK!! [2]
Here we go! http://www.valleyfarmcampsite.com
Also has a bus stop, talks about several pubs within walking distance, sells campfire wood. Option for people to rent much more expensive pre-set theme tents or even a cabin or two!
http://www.valleyfarmcampsite.com/bell-tents/4591657350
This is it. Don't have to do Oxonmoot if we can hang around a fire and people can do tents or glamping or cabins (don't see the prices for those last two though). Can do day trips into Oxford.
