Re: The Hobbit Trilogy Location-Elimination Game
The sad thing is I'm wondering if you could actually find an unspoilt green area that large in the UK these days (well an area, suitable for weeks of private large scale filming anyway) I very much doubt there's anything like that left around the Birmingham suburbs Tolkien grew up in...

Re: The Hobbit Trilogy Location-Elimination Game
{{Well these are all from England, so I think suitable replacements can be found.
In these days of cgi the best way would be to mix real and created- so for example in the yellow fields picture simply replace the farm building with Farmer Maggots farm and move the tress about a bit to better match the books description and where the Woody End should be and job done. Or the wide shot showing the village, simple replace the village with Hobbiton, you'd stil get proper village size sense of scale and the impression there were other villages dotted around.
In fact if I were doing it my opening shot of the Shire would be a flyover, a mix of real landscape and locations and cgi additions, and it would show the size of the Shire as it zoomed into the Hill, and Sam meeting the postman with a bag full of party replies on his way up it.

Re: The Hobbit Trilogy Location-Elimination Game
That's a fair point, but NZ had the advantage of being less built up and more remote so the film screw could film/build with little interference from the public, even many areas in England's 'green belt's' aren't more than a hour or two away from major roads and towns, in some ways I feel the more weatherbeaten landscape of NZ made the films feel more otherworldly and cinematic, sure it might not have resembled the Shire as Tolkien imagined it but I think it worked very well.

Re: The Hobbit Trilogy Location-Elimination Game
{{Not just grass, the unsuitable location they found, if you note it has a handy line of low hills that obscures anything immediately behind the area of 'the Shire' we can see. There is probably a road and modern farm right there- that sort of thing is not a problem really to a clever camera man and modern cgi. The Dead Marshes scenes where shot in a carpark next to a train track for example.
England certainly has landscape unspoiled enough to fill a wide shot, as the above pictures prove. And the north of England and parts of Scotland would certainly do for the journey east to Rivendell.
After that the ideal would be to film the production on location every increasingly southward- so Alps for Misty Mountains and eventually down to the Med for the Minas Tirith stuff.
Iceland would be good for Mordor.
This would give you something PJ's lacks- natural changing light and fauna that would subconscious reinforce a long journey being taken southward. All the lighting in PJ's looks the same because its all shot in NZ- so in terms of how things look Minas Tirith weather and light wise is the same as the Shire.
But there is a vast difference between the UK light and fauna the light and fauna at the Med- its why over the centuries so many artists have gone south 'for the light' and why Scotland is not famous for wine.
I get why PJ shot it all in NZ- its convenient, he knew many of the locations from previous films he had made, and its cost effective- I just dont think it produces the best results in an ideal world.
For my money it cant be done properly anyway on film- they were right- Lord of the Rings is unfilmable in the sense of making films out of it. You could however do it justice on television these days. And based very roughly on the radio play lengths you could do it all in two series of 12, 50 minute episodes, that would give it about 9 more hours than the radio play needed but accounting for differences in medium and including stuff it missed like Bombadil.}}}

I'm doing my best to, haven't watched TBOTFA since it came out (I remember virtually nothing about it), and haven't watched the others the whole way through in a couple of years.
I had thought I'd grow fonder/more forgiving of the films as time went on, but that hasn't happened, I just don't care enough about the films to even get annoyed with them anymore.

Malick, Malick, Malick....write out the full scores otherwise you're making other people do twice the work putting in their new points and yours!
