The Hobbit Character Elimination Game
THE GAME
Character elimination is a kind of game mainly played on forums, where you start with a list of characters (or sometimes things, places, events, whatever the category you wanna use is) that each have a set number of points. Players can gives points to one character and take them from another. Once a character reaches zero points, they are eliminated from the game. The last character left standing wins the game. Players often end up on informal teams, trying to help a given character win, but anyone can jump in at any time, which adds a level of unpredictability to the game.
I chose 20 characters from The Hobbit, which might be a bit much, but they only get five points each. To keep the overall number (relatively) down, I left out most of the Dwarves, since they largely blend together anyway. I will try to keep the OP updated with which characters have been eliminated and which are still in play, but it's a good rule of thumb to double check recent posts to see what the point totals for the characters you want to use are (including whether anyone has altered their point total at all yet).
THE RULES
Forest Shepherd wrote:Rule Change!
From henceforth, negative votes will count as a -3 modifier. Positive votes will still count only as 1.
- Each character starts with five points. You cannot add points to a character who has already reached zero.
- In each post, a player adds a point to one character and removes a point from another character. The total number of points between all characters is thus always the same.
- Wait for at least two intervening posts to have been made before posting again. It is allowed to coordinate with other players to try to be online at the same time and rack up a lot of points for your character, so long as the two post buffer is observed.
- If you are the person who takes a character down to zero points, please post "ELIMINATED" or something similar next to the character name in bold or red font.
- Please use the exact spelling of the character names in the list below, so that players can use control-F to find previous posts involving that character and make sure they have the correct point value.
- If you notice that the point value of a character seems to be off, you can correct it in your next post, but please also say something so everyone knows.
- The last character left at the end (who will by definition have 100 points) is the winner, ending the game.
EXAMPLE POSTS
Bilbo 6 (+1)
Smaug 4 (-1)
Several posts later...
Bilbo 10 (+1)
Smaug 0 (-10) ELIMINATED
Please follow the pattern of putting the character gaining points first, and the character losing points second, to reduce the possibility of confusion.
THE CHARACTERS

Finding characters to put a plus on is going to be a task and a half here I'd rather just take points of all of them until none are left- then pretend that's what happened to the films in production }}}

Re: The Hobbit Character Elimination Game
I suppose that could be a problem, Petty.
Pick a character you like (or are at least able to tolerate) from the list in the OP. Pick another character who you dislike or want to see eliminated sooner for whatever reason. Add one point to the character you like, take one away from the character you dislike. If no one else has added or taken away from a given character's point total yet, they're at five by default.

You have to also state what the score is after you do your thing.

Re: The Hobbit Character Elimination Game
You just look up to see what the previous number a character had (the one NOT in parenthesis). If nobody has listed a character, then the number must still be 5.
Then you add or subtract from one character, and do the same but the opposite to another character.
You list the number of points the character has after you've finished with him (it is the hobbit after all) and in parenthesis whether you've added or subtracted.
If lost you can always go back up to the top and read the directions again.

Re: The Hobbit Character Elimination Game
Roac 8 (+1)
Beorn 0 (-1) ELIMINATED
I liked him in the book, but given his movie portrayal I can understand why he lost so many points so fast.
Updated the list in the OP to reflect our first elimination.

Re: The Hobbit Character Elimination Game
You're good Malick, although the Great Goblin should be at 4 since you've taken one point away from his original five.
{{{Y'know guys, I specifically include book characters who got left out of the movies in this, and left out movie-only ones. Don't let PJ cloud your minds too much! }}}

Re: The Hobbit Character Elimination Game
{{{Now I'm confused I thought it was film characters, all the names on that list were characters in the films, weren't they? If we are scoring favourite and least favourite book characters that a whole other game! }}}
