Well that was, emotional. Basically my short version of this (I may do a longer one down the line be warned! And yes this is the short version! ) is most of it was brilliant with one niggle. Probably no prizes for guessing the niggle.
But the good- direction from Talalay again, outstanding. The framing of some of the shots was beautiful.
Capaldi just, words fail in describing his performance as the Doctor and they fail me again here. Just powerful as hell.
In fact the whole cast were on form, even the kids and they often are a weak point, but not here.
Loved the end of the Master/Missy- stabbed and shot him/herself in the back! The ultimate in self-destructive personality. Absolutely fitting. And of course the Master is now dead. Again.
And the Doctor pulling a Master himself! Refusing to regenerate and choosing instead to finally just go to his rest. Cue a bit of TARDIS interference as she whisks him back to what looks very much like the scene of his very first regeneration in the episode Tenth Planet to meet the original- the 1st Doctor (in the form of David Bradley, who now has weirdly played William Hartnell the actor of the 1st Doctor and now the actual 1st Doctor as a character!)
Looks like we are in for a xmas treat.
So the bit I have a problem with- yup Heathers reappearance- now I dont mind the magic wand Bills now like her no more Cyberbill mainly because it was way too harsh and bleak an ending for Who's overall optimistic message and because it was set up, granted I missed most of the clues; the Doctors reference to the anomaly of a crying cyberman- after all the whole point is the inhibitor stops you caring. And whilst I always thought Bill's line in The Pilot about the tears not being her tears were odd, I never made its connection to CyberBills tears or the Doctors words. So it was set up, long ago. But that is sort of the bit where I have an issue- long ago.
I feel it needed some other hint, some other set up along the way that would have kept the memory of Heater, her significance to Bill alive.
Looking back given that Bill's deceased mother played no great role in her character it might have been better to have had Bill feeling guilt for Heather, missing her and imaging her to talk to as a way of keeping that alive through the series.
As it is when she reappears it feels out of left-field and like pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
And whilst I like it as an ending for Bill and leaves the door open for a return (which may have been stipulated as she has hinted in interviews what happens to Bill next, if anything, has not been decided) I just wish it had a little more groundwork during the series not just in the Pilot. And secondary if you are going to use Heather in this way and conceive of it from the beginning I feel exactly who took her and what she has become needed a bit more explanation.
But other than one niggle this was a storming second part, a great set up for the xmas episode. And a right old emotional rollercoaster along the way.
You said it better than I could, more or less agree with you points.
Overall a very strong story, anchored by great performances all round (why
- Spoiler:
- couldn't Simm's Master have been written like this from the start? I loathed his take on the character in the RTD era, but they dialed back the zany and brought the menace to the fore, great double act with Missy and a very fitting ending for his Master
- Spoiler:
- that was a very clever way to keep Mackie physically present in the episode
- Spoiler:
- Bill's rescue by the puddle girl, I'd been assuming she'd return but I agree with your points, came across as a bit rushed and deux ex machina
- Spoiler:
- it's implied he and the group of humans are only a few days ahead of The Cybermen, so did the Doctor essentially abandon him to his death?
The Christmas Special looks set to be interesting!

Lots of people on Gallifreybase claim to have 'sources' in the BBC, various names have been chucked about but few sound very interesting or convincing, most of the rumours so far point to the BBC wanting some bland 35 year old Tennant knock off, but I'm hoping for something a bit more interesting, not even sure if I'll bother watching Series 11, enjoyed the Capaldi episodes so much I kind of feel like I've already had my era of Who and Chibnall's past Who/Torchwood work doesn't fill me with much confidence.
Series 11 is currently rumored to be start filming in November but I'd assume we'd know the identity of the 13th Doctor before then.

- the take on Simms Master- we do get a one line explanation that after his return to Gallifrey he was cured of the drums thing. I like to think therefore that the ridiculous lunatic RTD version was just that incarnation being driven mad as the events of Rassilon's plan drew closer in Time. And all that was early in the Simm's master's regeneration. Therefore we have a huge gap of years between him being kicked back out of Gallifrey after his cure and his arrival on the Mondas ship which BF can fill for us with this calmer, but as you say far more menacing version of the Simm Master.
The drums being cured also explain why Missy is both less lunatic than he was and capable of growth in her relationship with the Doctor.

On that topic, it was left quite vague if Missy directly followed Simm's Master (yes she claimed to have succeeded him but she might have been lying or wiped her memory or something), half expecting BF to invent a new Master for Smith's Doctor if/when he joins Big Finish...speaking of which...get on the phone to Capaldi's agent ASAP Nick Briggs! There's tonnes of room for new audio stories with the 12th Doctor and I think Capaldi would definitively consider doing some...

Petty, my Big Finish collection grows ever larger, nearly 200 titles listed on my account (mix of CD's and downloads) some of which are boxsets, so I probably have 250+ stories with several more pre-ordered.
And that's barely scratching the surface of their back catalog!:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Doctor_Who_audio_plays_by_Big_Finish
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Doctor_Who_spin_off_audio_plays_by_Big_Finish
Coupled with the various BBC Audio releases I wouldn't be surprised if there is 10 times more audio than visual Doctor Who, add in all the novels, short stories, comics and videogames and it maybe rivals Star Wars for most spinoff/extended universe stories...

Hey, I always liked K9
I did too, but he was mostly a supporting plot device with unintentional humour, Nardole is great in a similar way-he's a sarcastic alien cyborg with a odd sense of humour and mysterious backstory and mainly stays in the background, he enhances the Doctor/Bill partnership by acting as the third party, he was great in the Xmas special when it was just him and Capaldi but he worked even better in Series 10 because the oddness of his character stuck out more.
Nardole is tie with Donna as my favourite New Who companion, I hope Lucas and Capaldi do some Big Finish audios eventually...

No, but judging by Nardole's frequent and rambling stories of past adventures he has quite a odd and shady past:
http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Nardole
Maybe he was a chess player atone point as well...

I have the all the River and War Doctor sets
Plus:
Every 8th Doctor story
All the Novel adaptations
About half the lost stories
A scattering of random 5th/6th/7th Doctor stories
A few short trips and companion chronicles
The first 10th Doctor set
Tom Baker's first series
The 50th Anniversary story they did
And a few other odds and ends.
And that's maybe 10% of their Who stories
Finding time to listen to all of it (not to mention storing the CD's) can prove to be a hard though...
Around 90% of which was bought on sale, or pre-order pricing, I remember someone calculated on a different forum BF's entire catalogue of Who related stories would cost around £6000 at full price , and that was about three or four years ago, and many of BF's customers are die hard fans who buy physical CD copies of everything how they afford/manage to store all of it I don't know...and I'd be very surprised if BF's staff had actually heard all the stories themselves...
(Needless to say if/when they get the rights to the 12th Doctor and can persuade Capaldi to return, I'll be first in line to pre-order them )
(on the other hand I own only 2 Doctor Who DVD's I'm weird)

{{Moffat teased the idea a couple of times in the finale episode- Master- Is the future going to be all girl? Doctor -We can but hope.
Some rambling thoughts on the 1st Doctor, seeing as he is topical again!
Now if I were to describe negative characteristics of the 1st Doctor I may say he was a bit grumpy, curmudgeonly, arrogant, fussy, stubborn, set in his ways, overly confident, deceitful and lacking in empathy for other species.
Now to this of course you have to add his growing compassion, kindness, sense of fun and adventure, childish delight in new things and new life and his willingness to learn and change, even self sacrifice. But those as it were are his 'Doctorish' traits.
Lets take a look again at the negative list- grumpy, curmudgeonly, arrogant, fussy, stubborn, set in his ways, overly confident, deceitful and lacking in empathy for other species.
I contend those are essentially the defining characteristics of Time Lords as a people - I say people because Gallifreyians are the race and we know even less about the common folk of Galllifrey than we do the ruling Time Lord caste.
Time Lords of course never existed during the period of the First Doctor in the minds of the writers. The name 'Time Lords' would not make its appearance until the 2nd Doctor. All we knew of the 1st was that he had been exiled from his home world with his grand-daughter for reasons unknown (and which remain to this day unknown). Who his people were, the name of his home planet were a complete mystery.
And yet the Time Lords as they became more fully formed and particularly from the era of the 4th Doctor onward are basically extrapolated from the personality of the first Doctor. Its a bit like reverse stereotyping. One Time Lord's personality traits have been extrapolatiated out to be the dominant traits of the entire people.
The other thing about the personality traits of the 1st Doctor is if you list good and bad together- a bit grumpy, curmudgeonly, arrogant, fussy, stubborn, set in his ways, overly confident, deceitful and lacking in empathy for other species, but has compassion, kindness, a sense of fun and adventure, childish delight in new things and new life and a willingness to learn and change, even self sacrifice- it is of course also a description of the 12th Doctor and every one in-between. They are the underlying personality traits that never go away, just different aspects get more or less emphasis in different regeneration. But the basic 1st Doctor template always remains underneath every new personality and every new actors take on the role. So in theory it should make no difference if the Doctor is portrayed by a man or a woman so long as the template is in place underpinning the performance and writing.}}}

The other thing about the personality traits of the 1st Doctor is if you list good and bad together- a bit grumpy, curmudgeonly, arrogant, fussy, stubborn, set in his ways, overly confident, deceitful and lacking in empathy for other species, but has compassion, kindness, a sense of fun and adventure, childish delight in new things and new life and a willingness to learn and change, even self sacrifice- it is of course also a description of the 12th Doctor and every one in-between. They are the underlying personality traits that never go away, just different aspects get more or less emphasis in different regeneration. But the basic 1st Doctor template always remains underneath every new personality and every new actors take on the role. So in theory it should make no difference if the Doctor is portrayed by a man or a woman so long as the template is in place underpinning the performance and writing.}}}

Re: All New Who
Capaldi really is a incredible actor, his stories may have got mixed reaction but I've never seen a bad word about his Doctor, absolutely not ready to see him go
I've enjoyed the last three series so much I'm not even sure if I'll bother watching the next series, especially given the rumours the BBC want some bland Tennant knockoff as 13 and a return to the cheesy romance nonsense

McGann is my Doctor because of Big Finish (and the 8th Doctor novels) but Capaldi is easily my second favourite Doctor, such a great actor, lots of good stories, and one of the few Doctors to actually get meaningful character development from haunted pragmatist learning to love himself again, to aged rockstar having fun through to kooky but moral professor trying to help the little people.
I'm tempted to say the last three series have been my favourite since the Phillip Hincliffe/tom Baker seasons.
Really, really hoping he does Big Finish audios someday
