Re: All New Who
Here's a quote to drive Petty bonkers:
http://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/4-reasons-people-are-tired-of-watching-doctor-who.html/5/
Part of the beauty of existing within a fandom is sharing it with newcomers. Doctor Who is an entirely different animal though. Instructing someone how to watch this show for the first time requires a laundry list of requirements: Start with the first David Tennant season, go back and watch the Christopher Eccelston Doctor later, be prepared for two great seasons of Matt Smith, and then one really disappointing one right after that, be prepared for a singular Christmas special unrelated to the main story, and also the main character changes actors every 2 to 3 seasons, so be prepared for that. For anyone starting out, just thinking of all these requirements is absolutely exhausting at the very least, and at worst it’s insanely excessive.

Re: All New Who
{{ Whoever wrote that is either super ignorant of the subject matter, an idiot, a twat or all three! Simply inaccurate of course- the show is designed with built in reboots as it were designed for new viewers to join- 1st series of NuWho of course. Then series 3 then series 5. Series 8 is another and so too is the upcoming series 10 which is designed to do so blatantly that Moffat ironically called the episode 'The Pilot'
So the above is an inaccurate representation of how to watch Who- its not a hard show to get onboard with as the premise is always exactly the same and the base story simple- mysterious alien with time machine meets people and has adventurers with them- its all you have ever needed to know about Who- and why its first popular era in the USA only began 4 Doctors into it and 20 odd years into its run. That and the percentage of viewers who have seen every episode since it began is tiny in comparison to the percentage of the audience who just jumped on somewhere along the way and got swept up in the fabulous unique tv ride it is
Oh its also factually inaccurate about xmas specials not being related to the main series.}}}

Re: All New Who
Several places are reporting Capaldi
Or perhaps
Capaldi and Moffat have both teased the Doctor's regeneration will be 'explosive' and due to a rash action on the Doctor's part...so I wonder if they will be reintroducing the Valeyard...
- Spoiler:
- regenerates (or begins to regenerate) in the Series 10 finale
Or perhaps
- Spoiler:
- Capaldi regenerates at the end of episode 12, but the Christmas special is actually set before Series 10 and explains why, then we flashback to series 10 and the 13th Doctor gets revealed
- Spoiler:
- David Bradley is playing the 1st Doctor in the series finale/xmas special, perhaps Missy and The Master team up and tamper with the Doctor's timeline, maybe Capaldi regenerates twice and the 1st Doctor has to get involved to sort things out properly

Re: All New Who
- My thoughts on 'The Pilot':
All in all, a solidly enjoyable (if leisurely paced) jumping on point that manages to balance humour, scares and decent character interaction quite well, though the 'mcguffin' of the week is perhaps a little low key and under-written.
Considering this is Moffat's 6th season in a row this felt surprisingly fresh and character orientated (the second point is perhaps to the episodes detriment), Bill is a breath of fresh air (Pearl Mackie has more or less instant chemistry with Capaldi and displays a great deal of range-good find casting directors!) an ordinary down to earth young woman (how old she is, is a tad unclear 19? 22?-Mackie is 29) with a great deal of self confidence but a yearning to escape the ordinary drudgery of serving chips, kinda hearkens back to Rose and Donna in some ways, really liked some of the cheeky dialogue she shares with the Doctor.
Although the University environment brings back memories of 'Shada', I was mostly reminded of 'Rose'- a leisurely pace telling the story through the companion's point of view, keeping the Doctor quite mysterious until the last, a seemingly ordinary everyday object (in Rose it was a plastic dummny, hear it is a puddle) turning lethal etc
Although the story took a while to get into the 'meat' of the main plot the gentle pacing allows a nice balance between humour and scares (Matt Lucas as Nardole continues to amuse, his slightly nosy coward constrasts very well with the dry humour of Capaldi's Doctor) and some great pieces of dialogue between the Doctor and Bill.
(The lecturer-student angle was a very surprising and fresh one, curious to see how this develops in future episodes)
The mcguffin of the week was typically Moffat-an alien spaceship disguised as a evil puddle, conceptually quite creepy and low key but in a good way...I was less convinced by how it actually worked in practice, tad confused by how the puddle ship actually worked/the aliens inside (and why it was so strong/fast? seems weird the Doctor wasn't overly concerned about such a powerful object?) and the Doctor didn't seem overly concerned that an invincible puddle alien spaceship had happened to turn up at precisely the same town as the vault he was guarding (speaking of which I hope it is worth the wait to find out what is in the vault in the basement, kinda surprised they didn't end the episode with a further tease...), maybe it will be answered later in the series...
Bill's reaction to the Tardis was funny, but went on too long.
Some of the camera work was overly showy, Capaldi took something of a backseat to Mackie (but was on fine form anyway) and the music wasn't very memorable.
All in all a simple but very enjoyable episode, which hints at a very promising tardis team...let down but uneven pacing an a rather weak (if imaginitve) and under written villain of the week.
It very much reminded me of early RTD era, in a good way, though I couldn't help but wish for something with a little more umph after such a long gap since the last series.
Really liking Simm's new look as the Master shown in the teaser.
Interesting to note the Doctor has been at the university for Decades...does this make Nardole his longest running companion?
Only in Doctor Who could you have the star characters get chased across the universe by a lesbian stalker puddle...

Re: All New Who
Really interesting Capaldi seems to be playing the character slightly more mellowed/different each series (whereas some of the Doctor, such as Tennant or Davison seemed to be quite static the qhole way through and didn't change much as characters)
...thankfully Moffat has left lots of room for offscreen adventures, so Big Finish can explore/smooth over these gaps...

Re: All New Who
{{ Watched it in the company of Nagual, got a thumbs up from us both.
- Spoiler:
- Bill grew nicely on us as the episode progressed, the Doctor was great and like the grandfather vibe harking back to Susan. The story, as with most companion intro stories was there to introduce the companion to the Doctors world and did so nicely without being outstanding, but certainly ranks up with Rose and 11th Hour as excellent introduction episodes.
All round good stuff, good performances, good script, and Gold's score was refreshingly different. Also liked the direction, the pan back shot when Bill first enters the TARDIS was particualry nice.

{{Press round up-
So 1 very down review but the vast majority all positive. Also sitting at 8 out of 10 on Gallifrey Base at the moment too.
Overnights were 4.35million- exactly the same as last time it was on- which in the current climate is pretty damn good- most shows have lost viewers in that time period. It was the second most watched program on the BBC on the day and will probably top the Iplayer charts too. All in a good result for the shows return in terms of response. }}}
- Spoiler:
- ...'the best thing you can say about 'The Pilot' is that you don't need to have seen Doctor Who before to enjoy it. Hardcore fan or newbie, it's a terrific ride regardless....It's 'Rose', it's 'An Unearthly Child', it's vintage Doctor Who...Mackie is immediately engaging as the new companion on the block – charming, funny and inquisitive...A solid plot and strong character work...with the fast pace of Moffat's script reflected by Lawrence Gough's taut direction...as a soft reboot, 'The Pilot' works wonders. With a thoroughly modern companion setting the tone, this is new Who given a shot in the arm, a kick up the arse. It's Moffat, in his final year, throwing caution to the wind and simply saying... what the hell?'- Digital Spy
'After hearing about new companion Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) for almost a year now, it’s great to finally see her in action -- and to pretty much instantly fall for her....The dynamic between Capaldi and Mackie immediately sparkles...Doctor Who returns for Peter Capaldi’s final season in an amiable and fun introduction of Pearl Mackie’s new companion, Bill. 8.3' IGN
' If you’re already anticipating the complete reboot promised for 2018 under new showrunner Chris Chibnall, well it almost feels like Steven Moffat has accomplished it a year earlier.
Through the eyes of newcomer Bill Potts, The Pilot explores afresh the mysteries and joys at the core of this 54-year-old show....it reads like Educating Rita as Peter Capaldi’s prof offers Bill private tuition. A canteen worker with an enquiring mind she’s been slipping into his lectures. Who wouldn’t? Capaldi is a magnetic force....The Pilot has a lovely visual flair and is given an energetic snap from director Lawrence Gough. The effects of the menacing puddle and the watery transformations are expertly handled. But there’s a simple pleasure to be had in the presentation of our old friend, the Tardis. Never has it looked more stunning than in the gradual zoom-out from Bill at the police box doors as the lights and mechanisms flicker to life. Kudos to designer Michael Pickwoad and the lighting department.... The soundtrack is unusually varied, even encompassing snatches of Beethoven and Joy Division – fittingly, Love Will Tear Us Apart.'-Radio Times
'Tonight fans finally met Bill Potts and it’s safe to say that the casting directors and showrunner Steve Moffat can breathe a long sigh of relief. They have done a brilliant job at picking the new companion. Pearl Mackie positively glows as the new assistant in the BBC drama.....Bill is fun, sparky and super-smart....We were all in tears with Bill as she broke down while looking through the unseen pictures of her mother, who died when she was young. It was a performance of pure and raw emotion and it was completely believable - that scene alone won us over and made us love her. Newcomer Pearl feels totally natural in the role and is a strong fit for Doctor Who, with elements of Eighties companion Ace....Stephanie Hyam was terrifying as the student-turned-water zombie thing with its strange mimicry that had touches of both The Waters of Mars and Midnight.
Steven Moffat has always been good at doing introductory episodes, The Eleventh Hour possibly being his finest, but Pilot does feel like a nice way to usher in Bill’s era of Doctor Who. It’s more about Bill and bringing her into the Doctor Who world but we do get some scares along the way.'- Sunday Express
'Serving as a soft reboot for existing viewers - and a good jumping on point for newbies - we follow Bill as she is quickly swept into The Doctor’s world.....It’s not perfect but overall, it’s a punchy first episode that’s well paced and covers all the ground it needs. Very reminiscent of Billie Piper’s introduction in 2005’s Rose.'- Metro
And of course theres all one downer- this week it goes to the Telegraph who seem to have hated the whole thing!
'...a rather understated affair and acts as more of a quick introduction to Tardis-life for Bill than a regular Doctor Who episode...Mackie also, in the first episode, lacks the charismatic spark of Jenna Coleman....as a series opener it fails to make a big impression, let down by a flimsy storyline, clunky special effects and an underdeveloped foe. Murray Gold’s music also does the episode no favours, making heavy use of the rousing “I am the Doctor” theme when the events on screen don’t remotely match its intensity....with Bill’s character now established, the only way is up.'
So 1 very down review but the vast majority all positive. Also sitting at 8 out of 10 on Gallifrey Base at the moment too.
