- Spoiler:
This is a Cyberman story- creepy as fuck, disturbing on about a dozen different levels at once- if the publicity had not revealed the two big appearences in this episode it would have been an easy 10 out of 10 for me but loses a point thanks to the BBC spoiling their own bloody show
But yeah, great twists and turns, dark as anything where it needed to be (the scene where it turns out the 'medicine' in the drips is not for pain and in fact all they have on the drips is a volume switch so you dont have to listen to them in agony and pain and begging to be killed is one of Moffat's darkest ideas.
And once more Talalay's direction is top notch and wrings every moment of dark oppressive building fear out of this one.
Just stunning Who.
My thoughts on 'Of World And Time':
- Spoiler:
- I did feel the first 15 minutes or so were a tad slow, some of Missy's dailogue though amusing was overly meta and winking at the audience a little too much for my liking, though I did find the notion of the Doctor stuffing his face with crisps oddly hilarious, does he pop out and shop at Tesco now and again or something?
Nardole has grown to be one of my favourite companions from New Who and he was unfortunately sidelined in this episode, Lucas was given very little to do, though that allowed Peal Mackie to shine, probably her best performance so far, that tear at the end...
Other than that I don't have any issues, for what was essentially a filler episode setting up the finale it was a great, great episode overall. Solid direction from Rachel Talalay as usual, the episode was dripping with creepy atmosphere and great lighting, good performances all round (guessed it was Simm beneath that mask straight away, was never a massive fan of his Master but it's good to see him return all these years later, he seems to have toned down the zany aspects of his performance), lots of scares, some clever mindbending timey wimey stuff from the Black Hole and setting up what seems to be an epic finale.
Excellent stuff, the Mondasian Cybermen worked very well, let's hope next week is as good...
I'm assuming the opening regeneration tease is from the Christmas special...
9/10

Re: All New Who

- Spoiler:
- I didn't mind the meta stuff because it does work solely in-universe too- he did used to call himself Who, he even gave his car license plates Who 1- and it is just the sort of thing that two old mates would take the piss out of each other over. Especially because they choose their own name.
I spotted Simm too though not immediately and only because I was waiting on him turning up- but I dont think I would even have entertained the possibility of it being him had this episode not been spoiled.
On the regen- Moffat has said that the way 12 regens has been cooked up between him and Chibnal. Should be interesting.

Re: All New Who
{{Was nosing through this series rate/review thread on Gallifrey Base and decided to compile the scores for this series out of curiousity.
The following is in order of best to worst as voted for on Gallifrey Base. The first number is the percentage of folk out of 100 who gave an episode an 8 or higher- so the top end of the scale. And second figure is the score most voted for per episode out of 10. Those with an asterix are Moffat penned epiosdes.
*World Enough and Time 92.35 10/10
Oxygen 78.15 9/10
*Extremis 71.25 9/10
*The Pilot 62.58 8/10
Thin Ice 58.7 8/10
Pyramid at the End of the World 56.08 8/10
Empress of Mars- 55.09 8/10
Knock Knock- 54.24 8/10
Eaters of Light- 45.46 8/10
Smile- 38.4 8/10
The Lie of the Land- 35.69 7/10
Good to see Maithson's episode up there in 2nd spot. I am going to be very disappointed if Chibnal does not include him in his Writers Room.
Also regardless of what folk say about Moffat his episodes are consistently in any series rated among the best. This year all three of his episodes are in the top 4 and he is the only 10/10 episode.
Also I have to say the list does very much reflect my own view of this series episodes- by mid series Extremis and Oxygen were contending for the only stand out episodes and that's reflected here- and Lie being the poorest episode this series I would also agree with- compounded by it being a conclusion to a trilogy that started so strongly. But overall I would agree with the placements here.
Interesting too that no episode has got below a 7/10 this series- as much as there were few standouts there were few clunkers too. And I'd agree with that overall as well.}}}

Yeah David, you can't really jump on the bandwagon if it takes a whole day to download just one wheel of it!
I also have little choice in the matter. The internet I have is good enough for streaming most days, but the cost of all that data is inhibitive.
By the by, is this season (series) of Doctor Who over already?

Re: All New Who
{{Fine about change- its always changed its why it still on. Some concerns over changes to how the show is going to be made- following the US style writers room method rather than the traditional UK single writer approach to each episode. And lesser concern- Chibnal has written some solid Who but never an episode that really stood out head and shoulders above the pack. But thats a lesser concern beuase if the series is going to be done in a writers room then unlike previous showrunners Chibnal will not be penning any solo episodes. Also a big change.
I am very much of the wait and see mood right now- hoping it is good but my loyalty to Who has never been absolute- Ive stopped watching before when it was not my sort of Who. But its thanks to that cycle of change that if Chibnal Who is not my sort I need only wait until the show changes again into something I do like }}}

Re: All New Who
RE Capaldis regeneration, I have a madcap theory, as
The 5th Doctor audioplay Circular Time: Winter
- Spoiler:
- David Bradley is all but confirmed to be returning to play the 1st Doctor in the Xmas special
- Spoiler:
- ties in with the 1st Doctor's last story 'The Tenth Planet' which introduced the Cybermen, perhaps following the fallout from Series 10 maybe Bill and Nardole die or something? and the Doctor gets mortally injured in the process or something, the Doctor is driven mad with grief and actually dying, he refuses to regenerate not having the courage to go on, but it is encountering the 1st Doctor at the opposite end of the Cybermen's timeline that reminds him how far he has come and he then decides to carry on
The 5th Doctor audioplay Circular Time: Winter
- Spoiler:
- is actually set inside the Doctor's mind during the regeneration sequence in The Caves Of Androzani, the story being an metaphorical landscape conjured up by his mind as he pieces together what is happening to him, the 5th Doctor reaches out to past companions for the strength and encouragement to carry on
- Spoiler:
- David Bradley as the 1st Doctor

{{This from Rachel Talalay's blog- says all needs said on the subject I think-
'
“In real life, Moffat doesn’t work with women. He doesn’t hire women and he doesn’t collaborate with women professionally.“
I think that will come as a big surprised to Sue Vertue, Rachel Talalay, Sarah Dollard, Sheree Folkson, Rona Munro, Beryl Vertue, Nikki Wilson, Caroline Skinner, Hettie MacDonald, Catherine Tregenna, Rebecca Eaton, Denise Paul, Beth Willis, Catherine Morshead and many others. Hate Moffat all you want, but let’s not erase all the great work these women have done on Doctor Who and Sherlock as writers, directors and producers.
This makes me angry. I’m currently collaborating/working on my 8th episode with Steven Moffat – 7 Doctor Who’s and 1 Sherlock. I love working with him. (And, incidentally, I am a woman.)'- Rachel Talalay
{{ a quick glance over Talalay's history will quickly show she is no shrinking violet and has championed women in the industry all her life, particularly though not exclusively female directors. }}}

Re: All New Who
{{ Moffat in the RT talking about Capaldi leaving- }}
'Steven Moffat has admitted that he wanted Peter Capaldi to stay on for the next series of Doctor Who – if only to avoid the trauma of watching him quit the show.....“I was hoping he would stay on," he told The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2. "There’s only so much emotional trauma you can bear. I have had three versions of my childhood hero hand in their resignation to me, and there is no specific therapy for that; it is really quite difficult. [It's like] Santa Claus quitting in front of you.”
Moffat said that when he and Capaldi both discussed their decision to leave it was characterised by “a curt exchange of nods and suppressed emotion”.
“We are Scottish and we do not discuss emotion,” he said.
Moffat said that he decided to leave the show partly because he was tired.
“It’s been a long time and it completely fills the sky when you are doing Doctor Who; there’s no time for anything else. It’s so dominant.”
He added, “I just thought, 'I’m just tired I want to try something else, I want to do other things.'”
He also added that he expected there would be more Sherlock, although he said that he and Mark Gatiss have not yet had time to discuss it properly.'- RT

Re: All New Who
MASSIVE, MASSIVE Spoiler for the Christmas Special confirmed:
This has been rumoured for months so I'm not surprised to see it come true...very curious as to how it will work though!
Previous rumours have suggested
Not sure I agree with
- Spoiler:
- Photos from the set have leaked confirming it is (at least in part) a Multi Doctor story, with David Bradley portraying the 1st Doctor, a role he had previously played in the Docu-Drama 'An Adventure In Time And Space':

Previous rumours have suggested
- Spoiler:
- The 1st Doctor is either A) A manifestation of the Doctor's psyche, with the Xmas special set inside the 12th Doctor's mind during his regeneration, the 1st Doctor being a sort of 'ghost of days past' guiding the 12th Doctor through the process and showing him events from past incarnations inspiring him to carry on, or B)The 1st Doctor mysteriously disappears out of the story for a short while in his regeneration story 'The Tenth Planet' (which was incidentally the first appearance of the Cybermen) the Xmas special will show the 12th Doctor encountering him during this story, and with his help sealing away Gallifrey in the pocket dimension, Capaldi's first ever scene as the Doctor (from the 'No sir all 13!' sequence') might ironically end uo being his last chronologically...)
Not sure I agree with
- Spoiler:
- making Capaldi's last episode a multi Doctor special, especially with one of the Doctors recast
- Spoiler:
- Bradley was a great Hartnell (less so a excellent 1st Doctor)

Re: All New Who
{{
- Spoiler:
- I'm going with B- hope its that one anyway! It fits two of my earlier suppositions- that the opening of the last episode looks like the Tenth Planet Pole location and that Moffat, in his hatred of lose ends, would somehow have to tie up 12's appearance in the 50th before the end (would also explain how the 1st Doctor knew to go too).
I had forgotten the Doctor disappears for a bit in Tenth Planet - that just adds to my hope that is indeed what we are getting.

I have a feeling it might be a bit of both, certainly an unusual format for a regeneration story...
Also read some rumours on GB that we might
- Spoiler:
- see the 13th Doctor make his/her first appearance

{{Well that something I suppose!
Malick-
Malick-
- Spoiler:
- regards it being multi-Doctor, I dont mind on the basis it seems fitting somehow for 12. The most classic of NuWho Doctors.
And yeah Bradley was better as Hartnell than he was as the Doctor- but then he was playing Hartnell playing the Doctor- he might approach it a little differently when he is playing the part itself.

Re: All New Who
{{{ Learned a new lesson today- if you are going to watch a Moffat finale in VR to get the big screen treatment, try not to cry inside the headset!
- Spoiler:
- Well that was, emotional. Basically my short version of this (I may do a longer one down the line be warned! And yes this is the short version! ) is most of it was brilliant with one niggle. Probably no prizes for guessing the niggle.
But the good- direction from Talalay again, outstanding. The framing of some of the shots was beautiful.
Capaldi just, words fail in describing his performance as the Doctor and they fail me again here. Just powerful as hell.
In fact the whole cast were on form, even the kids and they often are a weak point, but not here.
Loved the end of the Master/Missy- stabbed and shot him/herself in the back! The ultimate in self-destructive personality. Absolutely fitting. And of course the Master is now dead. Again.
And the Doctor pulling a Master himself! Refusing to regenerate and choosing instead to finally just go to his rest. Cue a bit of TARDIS interference as she whisks him back to what looks very much like the scene of his very first regeneration in the episode Tenth Planet to meet the original- the 1st Doctor (in the form of David Bradley, who now has weirdly played William Hartnell the actor of the 1st Doctor and now the actual 1st Doctor as a character!)
Looks like we are in for a xmas treat.
So the bit I have a problem with- yup Heathers reappearance- now I dont mind the magic wand Bills now like her no more Cyberbill mainly because it was way too harsh and bleak an ending for Who's overall optimistic message and because it was set up, granted I missed most of the clues; the Doctors reference to the anomaly of a crying cyberman- after all the whole point is the inhibitor stops you caring. And whilst I always thought Bill's line in The Pilot about the tears not being her tears were odd, I never made its connection to CyberBills tears or the Doctors words. So it was set up, long ago. But that is sort of the bit where I have an issue- long ago.
I feel it needed some other hint, some other set up along the way that would have kept the memory of Heater, her significance to Bill alive.
Looking back given that Bill's deceased mother played no great role in her character it might have been better to have had Bill feeling guilt for Heather, missing her and imaging her to talk to as a way of keeping that alive through the series.
As it is when she reappears it feels out of left-field and like pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
And whilst I like it as an ending for Bill and leaves the door open for a return (which may have been stipulated as she has hinted in interviews what happens to Bill next, if anything, has not been decided) I just wish it had a little more groundwork during the series not just in the Pilot. And secondary if you are going to use Heather in this way and conceive of it from the beginning I feel exactly who took her and what she has become needed a bit more explanation.
But other than one niggle this was a storming second part, a great set up for the xmas episode. And a right old emotional rollercoaster along the way.
