If Petty falls through for some reason I can serve as backup: either by you first uploading them to youtube or by me giving you some ftp location. I'd have to remind myself how to use imovie, but that won't take so long.

Re: All New Who
- My thoughts on 'Thin Ice':
- Overall I really enjoyed that, in many respects a very standard run of the mill story, but one told rather well. Nice balance between humour and scares, good pacing, great costume/set design, and Capaldi and Mackie were on fine form as usual, the Bill/12 partnership continues to evolve at a nice pace, some of the dialogue was a bit on the nose but I did like how conflicted and 'real' Bill's reaction to the kid's death (and the Doctor's reaction to it) was, very surprised they actually killed the kid off and it was nice to see the stakes raised a bit.
The slightly callous reaction of the Doctor to the deaths's (and stealing of various items) was a welcome return to the persona of early Series 8, but his thoughts about 'moving on' and trying to save those that he can rather than grieve over those already lost shows how far this Doctor has come, his outrage/speech over Sutcliffe's actions at the end did seem a bit overwritten.
It was refreshing to see the show directly address racial issues of the day rather than as the Doctor says whitewash history, though the prevalence of so many Ethnic minority extras (especially as Soldiers, or what appeared to be well off businessmen-presumably the racist attitudes of the day would have blocked much of these jobs from the minority population) did take me out of the moment at times, it was well meaning and I certainly support the BBC for diversifying the show, but although London has had a small Black and Asian community for more than 400 years it been estimated to be never more than a few thousand and I think some viewers will find the social commentary to be a bit 'right on'.
To nitpick, I did feel the ending was a tad rushed-did the Doctor really have time to plant and set off all those explosives?, the villain of the episode (a human, not the sea creature interestingly) was very underwritten and broadly drawn as a posh nasty racist, and the title was rather misleading-the Ice wasn't exactly thin if it could support all those people...
Matt Lucas again had a very small part, but once again continues to amuse as the loyal, well meaning but slightly befuddled and snarky Nardole , his line about mixing Tea with Coffee to give it some flavour was hilarious.
As for the vault...someone knocked four times...so it's either John Simms' Master, or Bernard Cribbins returning as Wilf

Re: All New Who
{{ Similar thoughts myself Malick.
edit extra- watched Dollard being interviewed on the Who youtube channel, found it interesting she mentioned that she pitched this idea at Moffat- gives an interesting insight into the process of who comes up with ideas, her first episode Face the Raven Moffat deliberately tailored to appeal to her, as he really wanted her onboard as a writer, and that idea drew her in- to write Clara's ending episode. It seems Moffat is quite flexible with regard to pitching his writers ideas and to them pitching him ideas- Flatline was another episode where the writer, Maithesson, pitched it to Moffat. Many people assume that Moffat comes up with the episode ideas then pitches them out to the writers to write up as episodes, but seems the flow of ideas is fortunately much more two way- I wonder if, with a writers room Chibnal will retain this. }}}
- Spoiler:
- The tale was again simple,maybe too simple, the main villain whilst serving the thematic purpose well- lot of people in chains of one sort or another at the expense of the rich and of progress- but underdeveloped and pantomime.
Like last weeks a lot of really good character stuff, some great dialogue from Sarah Dollard for 12 and Bill, they worked great together here. But felt, like last weeks, it lacked an edge, a bit of pep- there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, it was solid, entertaining, well written, with some beautiful sets but so far this series has lacked the usual sense of energy and drive that have marked Moffats other series to this point.
The pace and the sense of tension is very laidback and low key so far, hoping it steps up the pace and tension a bit next week- been looking forward to this one since I first heard about it.

Re: All New Who
{{ Mmmm I noticed, and therefore am now tempted to splice together, the first three episodes of this series are one story. Three adventures, but one story.
If you were to take The Pilot, cut off the end credits and cutout the credits of the next episode, do the same for the third you'd have one continuous tale with no breaks in time, as each episode begins precisely where the last left off. It even has the capping tool of Nardole making the tea, with the Doctor telling Bill in the first episode they can be back before the kettle boils, and in the third they are indeed back in time for the tea.
If you did splice them together minus the credits inbetween you'd have a roughly 2hr 10 mins Who film focused on introducing the character of the Doctor through the eyes of Bill.
Like the first teaser trailer for this series the first three episodes follow the tag line- first he is amazing, then he is heroic, then you learn he is also very dangerous. Those are basically what Bill experiences, in that order, in the first three episodes.
I am rather curious now to watch them in this fashion as one continuous piece, it might actually resolve some of the pacing issues I have felt there has been in the last two episodes. }}}

Re: All New Who
- Thin ice:
- I suppose it is inevitable that some events will remind of earlier events. Like how were got reminded of Rose and 9 earlier. I was reminded of Beast below, only this was a version I think was better at character building. The Speech To Establish Who The Doctor Truly Is was put in the right mouth this time. It made little sense when Amy made it (or her version of it), it seemed to come from nowhere - there was too much happening off screen which we were supposed to just accept. We are meant to come along for the ride, and we are getting that now.
Bill's face is a joy to watch in any situation. She's so alive and she feels real. And Nardole is really owning his screen time.
Petty, maybe it's meant to be binge watch friendly for netflix and such? With no annoying trailers and automatic skipping of intro music/theme.

Re: All New Who
{{It used to happen in classic a lot, particularly very early classic where it was normal for any given episode to end with the first few minutes of the next one, in fact I am struggling to think where in the first series, if anywhere, there is a gap in time between episodes.
But what I found interesting here is that we get three individual stories, but one three block tale introducing Bill to the three aspects highlighted in the teaser trailer. Makes me wonder if the remainder of the series will be individual stories, or if like the first three they will be in story blocks grouping episodes together. It would be typical of Moffat to still be finding new ways to play with the formula. }}}

{{ I saw that too Malick- odd they kept her underwraps till now- that would be understandable i it was the original Carol Anne Ford or someone similar- but even if she is playing Susan as its not the same actress no-one would have thought anything other than 'guest star' if they had announced it at the start with everyone else like Suchet. So odd really.
I hope its not Susan- not that I dont want to see the character again- just that if it is dont see why they couldn't get Carol in to do it, far as I know she is alive and well. But maybe there are reasons we dont know about why she cant do it.
Still thats another Olivier award winning actor to add to the list of Grade A British acting talent this series has garnered to itself. }}}

Re: All New Who
{{{{ Thoughts on 'Knock, Knock'
- Spoiler:
- Well I said I was looking forwards to this, for the new writer and for Suchet- and for 90% of this I was very happy with both and 100% with the latter.
Suchet, as might be expected, puts in one of the finest guest appearances in an episode in years, if not one of my favourites of NuWHo. Its a brilliant performance that goes from creepy to tragic. Given the Landlord is not actually on screen that often the way Suchet commands that role is a masterclass.
Where I do have issue here is in the final third and some pacing issues again throughout.
For example the set up and reveal for the first big 'false' scare- when it turns out just to be the Doctor arsing about was fine, but the build up to it was way too long for what was obviously at that point in the story going to be the Doctor.
Yet other things, like explaining the background to the boy and his mother were rushed.
But my main problem with the ending is the restoration of everyone consumed by the bugs.
Now happy endings have happened in Moffat era in the past, and drawn criticism from some. I have never been among them because in each case I felt the survival was justified in one way or another by the narrative.
However in this case I dont think it is. There is no explanation given beyond the Doctor stating the fact 'she is giving them back' and if there is some underlying subtext its paying into it (like in Closing Time) I am missing it- but the how makes no sense- the bugs were converting humans into energy to preserve her. Even if when she dies she releases all that energy again, and the bugs could somehow reconstitute it back into the original person- where are the rest of them then? There should be folk from the previous decades too. But there is no sign of them.
In fact the decision to bring them back at the end smacks of a BBC exec decision, like they struck a deal- 'ok you can make the deaths that visual and gruesome, but only if it all turns out ok at the end and we see they are fine.' It seemed shoehorned onto the ending.
That part aside however it was classic creepy hide behind the sofa stuff, a great villain with whom you could sympathise with and see where they were coming from, decent effects for Who on the bugs and stellar effects work on the prosthetics for the mother- she looked superb in full body costume and the actress did brilliantly emoting from beneath it all- there is a real sense of emotion loss and pain in the scenes with her son, and Suchet is heartbreaking in those scenes.
I liked they split Bill and the Doctor up for this one, we get to see Bill has become quite resourceful and despite herself braver than her friends. And Capaldi is giving his continuing tour de force as the Doctor. His scenes with Suchet are gold, every one of them.
So an odd one overall- good premise, well realised, dodgy final act. Not a bad debut piece but needs some work still to nail that tricky Who formula. Hope he gets to write more however.
Overall I'd give this one a 7 out of 10, would have been easily an 8 if the flatmates had stayed dead or their resurrection had any sort of narrative sense.

http://www.denofgeek.com/uk/tv/torchwood/49320/torchwood-is-getting-a-fifth-series-in-audio-form
IIRC Barrowman said he had a couple of meetings with the BBC last year inquiring about the possibility of Torchwood returning to TV...evidently those talks were unsuccessful (and both RTD and Chris Chibnall are now busy on other projects) I think its fare to assume it's completely dead on TV now. RTD seems happy enough to let BF explore/expand the series in their own way (interesting he's contributing ideas and stories to the audios now, if not actually writing script...I wonder if BF could entice him back to write a full script, maybe for one of the Classic Doctors?) and although I'm not very interested in Torchwood myself, I've heard very good things about the other BF Torchwood stories.

Re: All New Who
{{ Thoughts on Oxygen- well Maithison returns to Who and I think this is my favourite episode so far in series ten.
- Spoiler:
- Things still dont seem as layered per episode as I have come to expect from Moffat Who, but this was a great example of a tight Who sci-fi romp with scares and peril.
The surviving crew who made up the supporting cast were ok, the racism thing with the blue guy was nicely handled and funny(Who- making racism fun again!). But we didn't get a huge amount of time to get to know them, but it didn't really matter as this was one for the three main leads to shine and they all do.
Capaldi as always is flawless, but Nardole gets a beefier role and I in particular like the closing scene with him and the Doctor. But the banter between the two at the start also raised a few smiles.
But its poor old Bill thats get put through the ringer and Pearl does a great job of making you feel for her, she plays being absolutely bloody terrified really well. And focus on her mum again...
The main thing to be emerging over this series is a theme- in the Pilot we had a piece of technology, a ship just trying to find a missing piece- a pilot, and using a person up to do it as a spare part.
In Smile we had Vardy, the worker class of their society, being taken for granted and their emergence as a species not noticed. And thanks to their programming they were killng people and making best use of them, as fertilizer.
In Thin Ice we have an innocent creature trapped and fed the lower classes by a rich businessman- again we have the lowest elements in society, here being literally fuel for a capitalist empire.
And now in Oxygen we have space suits that charge you per breath and terminate the life of any occupant who is not being productive or profitable enough.
I have no idea where, if anywhere this theme is going, or if the Who team just felt the world needed the message just now, but its definitely there. I dont remember Who having such as clear a political/social view as this since the McCoy era (so fitting perhaps this series sees the return of a writer from that era).
And of course have to mention the ending- ok I admit I did not see that coming no pun intended. Very interesting development to say the least making him apparently permanently blind- is 12 going out bit by bit?! It shall be very interesitng to see where they go with it next week and how permanent it actually is.
Overall enjoyed this one a fair bit. 8 out of 10 for a classic base-under-seige style story with creepy killer suit (literal and corporate) and a message in their too.

I thought it was very well made, but it just left me a bit cold not bad per se, just not something I really invested in, loved Mathiesen's previous eps so maybe I will have to rewatch it
