Re: All New Who
{{Well maybe things will return to normal next ep! Especially as its Cotterl-Boyce's second episode, his first being the much loathed by many In the Forest of the Night - though I seem to recall Figg was more a fan of it than many.
Personally I liked Forest but felt it was underdeveloped and rushed- seemed like a two part story crammed into one and some stuff, like the sister, was left oddly stuck on to it. But the character stuff in it was really good so hoping that strength of his writing comes out again next ep- he has been given the very important 'companions first adventure' story afterall in the line of Rose- End of the World, Martha- Shakespeare Code, Donna- Fires of Pompeii, Amy- The Beast Below and Clara- The Rings of Akenaten. They are a tricky one to write as they set up the tone for the character dynamic.}}}

Re: All New Who
{{Chibnall was giving an interview about the nendof Broidchurch andnaturally his next job with WHo came up-
'"It's way too early to talk about Doctor Who. There's still an amazing series to go out with Peter Capaldi," he said. "I've been thinking about it for a long time and we're putting a team together. But for another year there is an amazing Doctor, there's an amazing showrunner in Steven Moffatt and I've read the scripts for this series and they are phenomenal."
Whats interesting here think is the mention of putting a team together- presumably he is referring to his previously mooted idea of having a US style writers room. Although he could be talking more broadly- there has not been word on if the production team is changing too as it did when RTD left. So he could be referring to an all new production team, an all new writers team, or both. }}}

I'll wait one more episode - or maybe two - to declare the end of the world, but we must be pretty darn close 'cause I liked the episode and Bill too!

{{I thought Nardole had some good lines, particularity liked his explanation to Bill about how to make a TARDIS-
Nardole- Well first, you have to imagine a very big box fitting inside a very small box.
Bill- Ok, yeah.
Nardole- Then... you have to make one. It's the second part people usually get stuck on.
Was funny delivery in its own right as well as being a nice nod to the 4th Doctor explaining the TARDIS to Leela}}

Re: All New Who
I've really liked Nardole since his first appearance, a male and alien companion at last! Giving Nardole some of the wackier comedy/sarcasm/disagreeing with the Doctor stuff allows them to make Bill more normal and down to earth-one of the problems with Clara was she was too experienced/self confident/willing to stand her ground, the 12th Doctor is quite acerbic and kooky and needs a more grounded companion i.m.o to get the best out of him (though I loved the 12/Clara team I do think Bill and Nardole will give Capaldi a more interesting team to bounce off) having two companions-one a normal excited girl, and one a cowardly zany alien robot man makes for an interesting balance.
Moffat has said Nardole takes a supporting role for the first 5-6 episodes to allow Bill to settle in and get experienced, having a more prominent role later in the series.
Nardole although appearing in just three episodes so far, has by this point known and traveled with the Doctor for decades (perhaps as much as a century) so is perhaps the longest serving companion so far, yes he dosen't have much to do at the moment and comes across as slightly useless but Lucas gives the character just the right balance of warm hearted kookyness and cowardly sarcasm.
Kinda reminds me of K9, in a good way.

Re: All New Who
{{Not sure I see the connection- from what I remember 9 offers to take Rose and she turns it down to stay with a cringing crying Mickey, the Doctor leaves then comes back says 'It also travels and time' and she dumps Mickey instantly on the spot with the following unpleasant exchange Rose-"Thanks"
Mickey- "Thanks for what?"
Rose- "Exactly." and runs off with the Doctor.
In this Bill wants to travel with the Doctor after having seen whats out there with Heather, the Doctor refuses because of whatever the reason he is at the uni is, then changes his mind and decides to take her long with him with the following exchange -
Bill-"What changed your mind?"
The Doctor- "Time."
Bill- "Time?"
The Doctor- "Time And Relative Dimension In Space, it means, what the hell."
So not seeing the similarity, motivations are different fro both Doctor and Companion, set up is different and Bill isn't needlessly cruel to someone who loves her first before she goes.
And Id love to know how Rose treating Mickey like shit right before she dumps him for the Doctor and leaves him literally crying in an alleyway is doing it better. Far more dislikable yes, better no! }}

Re: All New Who
My thoughts on Series 10 episode 2 'Smile':
- Spoiler:
- Well, that was rather average wasn't it? and I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way-it was a decent enough script (in the sense of good dialogue, and a inventive central premise) but a rather throwaway story with serious pacing issues and underwritten villains, yet again New Who falls victim to the pitfalls of 50 minute episodes.
-Much better than the writer's previous effort 'In The Forrest Of The Night', the central premise of the story was quite intriguing and it's internal logic stood up to scrutiny, the emojibots were a really interesting idea and I liked the design...but I'm not so sure they would actually come across as that scary to viewers.
The storyline though clever felt a little sparse and had serious pacing issues i.m.o, great dialogue and acting won't matter to casual viewers or children expecting more action- there were very few scares (though the skeletons are sure to creep out a few younger viewers) and I can honestly see a lot of younger viewers being bored by this episode, the climax felt bolted onto the meat of the story and the use of the sonic screwdriver was yet another lazy reset button...really wish they'd find a way to write it out again...
Ralph Little had almost nothing to do in his tiny guest role, the colonists were so underwritten I'm surprised if any viewers would really care about them.
It was very nicely shot and the sets were quite expansive for such a small scale episode.
Great character work between The Doctor and Bill, lots of amusing one liners (Bill seems to be making a habit of pointing out obvious flaws in the tardis which I love) and the dialogue wasn't as overwritten as it was last week, much of the episode is a two hander between Capaldi and Mackie and they mostly shine in these scenes (though Bill's grief at the video's of the dead colonists came across as a little wooden)
Matt Lucas was quite amusing in his one scene, I understand that Moffat wants to establish Bill but Nardole's very underwritten so far for a supposed joint lead...
Enjoyable episode with great character (and camera) work and an interesting central premise, but a very thin story.
6/10
(Again I got early RTD era vibes from this episode)

Re: All New Who
{{
- Spoiler:
- Over all I'd agree, it held together much better than Forest did in terms of plotting, but I rather feel in response to Forest Boyce went to much the other way, his determination to provide a solid well thought out idea and plot that would stand up to close scrutiny got in the way of its own story.
Oddly enough whilst this made it far more coherent and solid than Forest, it was also less interesting along the way.
It felt very classic at the start- I could easily see the 1st Doctor and Wendy or someone wandering into such a place and slowly uncovering whats happened. And I love that, problem here is in classic them doing that would have been the first episode, in the second they would have faced attack from the threat and the third episode we would have met the colonists and the fourth would have been the resolution. That would be 2 hours worth- here we get the first half hour classic style, but the rest is stuck int the last ten minutes.
As a result the pacing seems off, the resolution comes to soon, and the colonists are there but I couldn't tell you a single one of their names. There just isn't the time to establish them.
And that I have to put at Boyce's feet as he does spend in my view too much time on the exposition part of the plot and the st up and not enough on the rest.
A lot of the character stuff is great, Boyce does that well, and the ideas are great and the setting is beautiful and I thought the robot designs were excellent.
But a lot of it is not also doing much to help advance the plot as much as it is character, and with not enough plot going on in the first half and too much in the second its an odd episode to rate.
As you say Malick, its certainly not bad, its just not great either- pretty much the epitomy of the average episode- an ok stand alone with interesting ideas, setting and some good character stuff, but not one you will rush to watch again anytime.
ps didnt mind the sonic bit- it was just the means by which he could reset them- it wasnt the solution, that was the realisation they had become self aware. That was the real solution.

Re: All New Who
{{Got to admit I did smile (!) at the following exchange-
Bill- Why are you Scottish?
Doctor- I'm not Scottish I'm just cross.
Bill- But is there a Scotland in space?
Doctor- They are all over the place, demanding Independence from every planet they land on. }}}}}}

Re: All New Who
- So...:
- It's a really strange feeling to not have something to complain about. But yes, average episode, back to basic. I like that the TARDIS is allowed to have a personality again; taking her crew to where they need to be, not where they want to go. The Vault can contain anything, anything can happen.

{{Not sure what you mean- when did she stop? She had issues with Clara because Clara was a weird time anomaly, she refused to land on Trenzalore and last series she tried to run from the 'ghosts' under the Lake as she didn't like them. Id say the TARDIS is far more a personality under Moffat than previously, hell we even got her embodiment in the Doctor's Wife.
Before that she was just a device they occasionally implied or mentioned was sentient in some fashion but who rarely if ever actually displayed it in a relevant plot way (I'm struggling here to think of an RTD era example where it happens!)
Regards Smile-

- Spoiler:
- I think I know how to improve the pacing of the entire first half, crank up the tension and give a big 'oh fuck' moment to it by not having to change a single thing- just remove something.
The precredits sequence- if that had ended on the Doctor and Bill setting off for the future and not shown us the robots killing someone then the first half would be a proper mystery- it has that structure already, them uncovering what happened, but we the viewer already know 'who dunnit'- if we didn't then the discoveries would be more interesting solving the plotting issue (largely caused by them discovering what we already know), and the final revelation that it was the seemingly harmless cute robots we have been seeing that were doing the killing would be a great reveal moment and shocker.
