Was gonna edit this in before you responded though:
halfwise wrote:Seven Nation Army comes the closest to getting people to cheer and rush the dance floor, but these ain't no "Sweet Home Alabama".
Not every song is meant to be a dance song (as I alluded to in my post at the top of the previous page) even when the musical structure is less raw and confrontational than something like "I Luv U". I think it's fairly self-evident from listening to "Hurt", "Teardrop", or "Paranoid Android" that getting up and cheering is not the intended audience reaction. I don't mean to imply that dance music is less worthwhile (I happen to think that "Hey Ya!" is a real banger, though I respect that not everyone agrees), but I think music made for other purposes is just as legitimate an artistic and creative endeavor.
I can, however, agree that "All Star" is pretty bad.
Re: Music [3]
Definitely a song's danciness is no criterion to judge, but what I meant is that songs from that decade just don't have the resonance that is associated with songs from before and after. "All Star" actually does stick in the head, I have to admit. But there's just not as many songs that will be remembered and played in the decades to come.

It's nice to hear something other than "the Unanswered Question" from Ives. Not knocking UQ which is pretty cool, but he did more than just that.

Re: Music [3]
I never really took to UQ. UQ is pretty much what they'll cover on Ives in any all-encompassing music history course, or 20th century music course. It's a shame, because the kids are missing out on a lot of great Ives music. I really had to do a lot of my own reading and listening to learn more. Symphonies no. 3 and 4 are great.
I'd recommend checking out these pieces:
Variations on America.
Piano Sonata no. 2. (fans of Beethoven will recognize a familiar motif in this one)
The "Holidays Symphony"
And any of the songs.
And here's the man himself:
That last video really puts a smile on my face. I can just imagine the old man banging away at the piano. It's great!

Ooh, good music.

Re: Music [3]
Perhaps the most amazing voice in music. I've heard that the studio band almost quit playing in shock when he hit the high note in Pretty Woman without popping into falsetto.
The town where he was born in Pennsylvania changed it's name to Orbisonia. I've driven through it several times.
Funny, right after listening to that Ives piece I was watching the X-Files and the music was almost the same.....

Many of those techniques I've never heard done on a modern drum set.

Brilliant isnt he? Liked the way he tightens the skins then untightens them to get a different sound.
Jo Jones is one of the greatest drummer in the history of Jazz. Most inventive, he frequently improvises the most unpredictable and bold breaks with an impressive rythmic energy. This example of his drum solo shows his amazing and unique variety.

His control is incredible, and the fact that he looks so relaxed the entire time. I love the trill he does with his fingers at the start of the solo.

Re: Music [3]
It's a little unsettling just how much their lead singer sounds like Robert Plant.
They're pretty good though IMO. Their second EP has a bit more of an original sound.

When I saw the title I thought we'd be getting something like this:
there's really nothing quite like it.
