I thought Guardians of the Galaxy 1 was simply good, not great. It didn't leave me with anything once I left the theater. For that reason I haven't bothered to get out to see vol 2. The truly great films haunt you.

I watched "The Motorcycle Diaries" tonight. I didn't think at the time it was a great film, I had to keep up with the subtitles & the language they spoke was pretty speedy but, at the end, when the credits came up, it told you that this was a snippet in the life of Che Guevara. A time when he & a good friend were young, Che was studying to be a doctor, his friend a Biologist & how they decided to ride a motorbike across country & end up at a Leper Hospital to help the people there. It may not have been a great film but I'm glad I watched it.

Saw that a while ago.  It's quite pleasant, but unless you know it's Che Gueverra you'd pass it off as just an art house film. It's good to know he didn't come out of a pure burn-the-government-down type of place.

Yeah nice to see some Che pre-killing-lots-of-people mode.

He was a fascinating character, earning both the romantic and the opposing fiery myths. I heard a group of Argentinian grad students sing one of the romantic ballads about him, and I think his dream of an independent, pan-south-american hegemony lives on. South America has certainly been rising, through capitalism rather than Che's marxism, but his early humanitarian views still bind the Latin-americans together.

its not a film but a documentary, the BBC asked 4 civilian reporters from Aleppo to film the last days of the siege before they left. 4 normal boys with normal interests like getting married and having their washing done by auntie. You could see the fear in their eyes during the shelling, and their pain at leaving, all their memories behind. they had worked for the White Helmets until most of them were dead and must have seen terrible things past bearing, but the remarkable thing was their eyes. Their eyes had very human expressions and you could tell they were still relatively normal boys beyond all the horror they could still smile and cry they felt things. Then the remarkable thing was the last few minutes when the buses the regime had put on for the last civilians and opposition fighters to leave, and the fighters were literally a different species, no longer human they looked like starving savage animals, they had come from the front line and had their weapons, but there again their eyes were the startling aspect, because their eyes were like black holes of savagery and were not quite human, I had the instant impression of wild dogs, starving emaciated and pitiless. they were two species of human, the normal non fighting boys and these other creatures from the abyss. it was weird.

I'm going to re-watch Part II soon as well, the first film is still my favourite but II is every bit as good (from what I remember anyway...haven't watched it for several years, it is 200 minutes long!)-it has more polished cinematography, and a more interesting, expansive (if a tad convoluted) plot, but lacks some of the focus and warmth of the first film (which was no doubt intentional)...though I will say the final shot of Michael contemplating his actions is perhaps my favourite shot in cinematic history...

I've watched III just once, and to be frank can't really remember it very well, but I certainly don't remember hating it merely thinking ''the point of that was?'', from what I recall the plot was somewhat convoluted, Sophie Coppola was completely miscast (though as I understand it she stepped in at the very last minute as a favour to her father, the director) the script lacked focus and really missed the character of Tom Hagen...but I do seem to recall the muddled plot being balanced out by great music/cinematography and some interesting character drama/ruminations on the nature of forgiveness, it's certainly flawed and the odd one out in the trilogy but a decent enough companion piece/epilogue with lots of enjoyable/good stuff in it...but I just didn't feel like it was necessary (though in fairness, Francis Ford Coppola has more or less admitted he made it largely for money, and apparently only had a few weeks to write the script, even less after Robert Duvall dropped out), it might have worked better as a novel.

Andy Garcia was great though.

If it was made mostly for the money I'd say it's a pretty good one considering - after all, we've all seen The Hobbit. Definitely agree about the first film, though, my fav too.

On another note: watched The Lobster tonight, most absurd thing I've seen in ages (except Twin Peaks ofc). Anyone else seen it?

From the clips I assume there is absolutely none of the humor the Fraiser versions had.

Tom Cruise is out of his comfort zone on this one, he has no comedic timing & jokes just seem to pass him by. He was the wrong guy for the job. No charisma there at all, unlike Fraser & Weisz who really did gel together. And as for Cruise's leading lady ? She was more wooden than my sideboard.

Cruz is quite capable of doing comedy, but the mix of action/comedy is not something he's done. Apparently for good reason.
