{{I don't rate either of their chances very highly after this election of not being assassinated, or attempted at least. That's the problem with huge countries, even if only 2% of supporters on either side are total nutters, that's still a shit load of nutters}}}

Re: US General Election 2016
Trump would definitely be assassinated but not by loonies but by his own government, he is too dangerous to be president. someone would take an executive decision. he is a danger to world peace, after all, 'long was this doom foretold'

Re: US General Election 2016
I don't think I have ever been so revulsed at the thought of someone being elected to a Western government as I have Trump.... I guess, just as revolting people have run in elections in my time, but none have had the potential for ultimate power to go with it.

Btw I will miss the Obamas. Quality people. Diplomatic and cool. Obama achieved nothing like he would have liked because of a hostile Congress for eight years. Shame, Congress, shame!

Re: US General Election 2016
I don't think there's really a possibility that either could or would "get assasinated", I'm a lot more scared of the rising volume of vigilante groups denying the political authority of the governement and Trump's "I haven't decided if I will accept the election results." Official candidates playing with themes and feelings like that is the real danger to democracy.

I respect that Halfy, but I'd argue that a protest vote actually counts more, unless of course you live in a swing-state like Florida or North Carolina where a handful of votes could change everything.
I've just realized, Trump is the ultimate protest vote. And his candidacy may in fact get the message across that things need to change and the parties have to start actually working together. He already made an impression on Bill Maher, who publicly apologized for all the attacks he made on George Bush and Mitt Romney.

Even if only .000001% of the supporters on one side are total nutters, that's still like 50 of 'em!

Re: US General Election 2016
I don't really think the Interwar period comparisons do any good for anyone. Trump is not a fascist (incoherent populism is not the same thing), there are no Brownshirts (or widespread acceptance of paramilitary forces in our political culture), and the legitimacy of the US Constitution is not being questioned (in fact you could argue that it's revered too much but that's the opposite problem of what the Weimar Republic had). I think Trump is a singularly unqualified candidate and that his temperament would be cause for serious concern were he to win, but that's not the same thing as being a Hitler or a Mussolini.

Re: US General Election 2016
That chalkboard was rather clever.
I think the comparisons to Mussolini and Hitler are silly. The U.S. is not post-war (WW1) Germany, nor have the recent protests and rioting been anything as pervasive and disruptive as the social conflicts in Italy previous to Mussolini's take-over of the government in 1922. I mean, Italy underwent two years of socialist anarchy in the late teens. I don't think the Occupy movement exactly counts as a modern corollary!
It's just the usual eye-catching bullshit that always accompanies political debate amongst the populace. I mean, I'm sure we can all remember the "Impeach Bush!" quotes being thrown around not so long ago.
Anyway, I don't think my vote here in California was going to rock the boat much.
I went for a third-party candidate anyway. This will actually be the first year I've participated in a presidential vote. What a time to join in eh?

Re: US General Election 2016
I'm starting to be seriously convinced by this non-swing-state/protest vote idea. Stupid winner-take-all convention...

It's started!
That's Clinton-4, Trump-2, Johnson-1, Romney-1

These die-hard voters are proud to have the first word on the big vote. While Clinton won half the Dixville votes, Libertarian Gary Johnson took one and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney got a write-in vote.

Re: US General Election 2016
I'm surprised to see so few votes from Dixville Notch. There were like 20 voters there in 2008. Maybe there's something to the whole depressed turnout theory.
Re: US General Election 2016
Either that or the election monitors have prevented them from voting more than once this time.
