Re: US General Election 2016
For myself, I'm pleased to see Trump making it into the general election, just as I was when Sara Palin ran for VP. It's proof to hundreds of millions of that the democratic process still works and that ordinary people still have access to the process because, let's face it, the ordinary population contains a significant percentage of idiots and tyrants.
It's also good that people on both sides can get really angry about it. That shows that it all still matters.
What was a lot scarier for me was back last year when it looked like it was going to be a Clinton running against a Bush for president, and each running on the same old retreaded policies. Then it would have been hard to convince people the elections weren't just an expensive, scripted puppet show.

Re: US General Election 2016
Interesting perspective. If Bush and Clinton really stood for what they said they did then I'd argue that they represented sanity and it's all good; but Bush was trying to finesse the election funding process, and Hillary seems less sincere than Bill, which is really saying something.

The big problem with the Bushes is that there are 3 of them. A vote for Jeb would have been a vote for a dynasty.

{{{Trumps big foreign policy 'How I will bomb the shit out of ISIS' speech some time later- should be interesting to see if he has moderated his previous positions any (I'll be surprised if he doesnt contradict himself at least a few times) }}}

the best part about this is the title:

For those outside the US who have no reason to remember her, Michelle Bachman is one of the loonies who ran for president last time around. I have cause to wonder if she's been outside the US.

Re: US General Election 2016
Trump’s new deportation plan: Do what Obama is doing but ‘with a lot more energy’
After spending a few days reflecting on his immigration stances and consulting with Hispanic supporters, Donald Trump on Monday detailed how he would deal with the millions of immigrants illegally living in the United States: Enforce laws that are already on the books and continue to do what President Obama is doing, although "perhaps with a lot more energy."
This strategy marks a sudden change for the Republican nominee, who has presented himself as a politically incorrect outsider who is not afraid to take extreme measures to combat illegal immigration, such as deporting 11 million people or constructing a massive wall along the Southern border. For more than a year, Trump insisted that all illegal immigrants "have got to go" and that he would create a "deportation force" to carry out the task.
Trump struck a starkly different tone during an interview with Bill O'Reilly that aired on Fox News on Monday night. Trump said he would separate the country's undocumented immigrants into two groups: The "bad ones" who would be kicked out of the country as soon as he takes office and "everybody else" who would go through the same process that the Obama Administration is currently using.

{{{I see the right wing press are prasing Trump's Mexico trip as some stroke of genius and a huge success.
Which is odd as I haven't had the time to pay close attention to it, but what made the news here was Trump saying, "We didn't discuss paying for the wall." Only for the Mexican President to respond saying, "yes we did and I said Mexico wasn't paying for it."
So the impression I get, yet again is Trump still is saying whatever he thinks in that moment sounds best, and makes him look good, even though what he is saying can be refuted as a lie almost instantly upon him saying it.
This does not strike me as a good attribute in international diplomacy! }}}

I think the "success" they're talking about is that Trump once again managed to hijack the headlines all around the world, and for once did it without sticking his foot in has mouth.

{{{So saying the opposite of what actually happened doesn't even count as 'sticking his foot in his mouth' any more.
Wow. How far you have come America!
Saw a snippet of his rally and him geeing up the crowd with the wall rhetoric, and he stood there at the podium as his audience chanted back ' U. S. A. U.S.A.- I find that totally chilling, it's the same, serving the same purpose as the B.B B.B chant of Orwell's 1984. }}}

those loons over at Discovery Channel used to do these programmes about THE END OF THE WORLD, ARMAGEDDON IS NIGH, and ANCIENT ALIENS ATE MY HAMSTER, and how to recognize the antichrist, well HELLO! they are starting to look like they were on to something. Donald Trump fits the description perfectly.

Re: US General Election 2016
Clinton's up in the average of polls; better than when Trump was in the middle of his convention bounce but worse than she's been at many other points. Now that we're past Labour Day the polls' predictive power should be greater but there's still plenty that can happen (the general election campaign is only just now kicking into gear) and Trump is such an unprecedented kind of candidate that previous elections may be less of a guide. Will be interesting to see how the debates affect things.

It's also worth keeping in mind that the national popular vote is ultimately irrelevant (just ask Al Gore) and Democrats have way more "safe" Electoral votes than the GOP does (currently; this state of affairs isn't going to last forever, but it's a result of much slower processes than the relatively wild swings of national opinion polls).
