Moffat confirms the title role had been offered to a Black actor:

I've read rumours that Chiweitel Ejifor and David Harewood were approached about the role (both of whom would have been great choices i.m.o) but turned it down.

i think it was 11, from memory Capaldi was the only person they seriously considered for 12.

I'm completely open to an ethnic minority Doctor, my only worry if if he's supposedly the same person every time he regenerates, I hope they wouldn't make too much of a point about race etc, could put the actor in question on a pedestal (i.e making him just the black doctor rather than a doctor) or alienate viewers (on the other hand if you don't address it, some might be insulted), just because there hasn't been a female/ethnic minority doctor yet doesn't mean there should be (personally I'm mostly against a female doctor, for me it would be too drastic and unnecessary change to the character and it certainly splits the fanbase), it worked with the Master because he's a thinly written zany, calculating git in every regeneration), any actor should be cast largely on merit, rather than just to tick a box or be different i.m.o.

(I remember a Moffat interview somewhere in which he mentioned he had intended to cast an Older Actor for 11, the casting for Sherlock was going on at the same time, Smith had read for Watson but they asked him to read for the Doctor and was so impressed he decided to go with another younger Doctor)

The political Zygon ep wasn't all that bad. Raven was nice, liked the alien Diagon Alley and I quite like Ashildir. The Sandmen ep was awful. The castle was excellent. Brilliant visuals. Pure delight!

I don't understand why they feel pressured into going down the racial quota route, surely they should just cast the person who fits the role not who fits the race. call me old fashioned. Its a bit insulting to both races. btw the article missed out Martha, what was she, chopped liver?

I read that long ago before GRRM was a thing. Creeped me out something wonderful. I thought it was Jack Vance for a long time and was surprised to discover it was GRRM.

I wonder how Eccleston or Capaldi would have fared back in 1996? Both were much less established actors at this point and the producers seemed dead set on going down the pacifist romantic route for the 8th Doctor, weird to think of Eccleston playing those 'Who Am I???' and 'These shoes they fit perfectly!' scenes...on the other hand I can defintely picture (well, hear) Capaldi in some of McGann's Audios (Scherzo and Dark Eyes spring to mind).

Just imagine in some alternative universe we might have still got all three, but McGann might have been cast as the 9th or 12th Doctor...
