You may be interested to know that I'm trying to get funding for a project to support people during heat waves who don't have air conditioning. The idea is to get sensors in their houses long enough that we can figure out the thermal parameters of their houses, then use that for forecasting purposes. We should eventually be able to tell them how much of a difference pulling their curtains on a sunny day will make, using a window fan, etc.

I am interested to know, good idea.
I know Figgy, there are places as hot as Satan's arse but, here in Blighty we are just not used to it We are the waddle ducks of the world normally ( rain )

Halfy its 26 degrees in my house, I don't have air conditioning, or a fan. curtains are useless, they make it worse, what you need is small windows and wooden shutters, curtains and carpets are terrible in the heat, so you need hard cool flooring and as little soft furnishing as possible. But window size is key, large plate glass is murder without air-con.

I know I've got no right to complain while you folks are roasting, but it's mid summer when we should have some warmth for growing cranberries, and instead we've got 55 F (13 C) degrees and dripping fog...

26 degrees C and you're complaining?! Right now Texas is 46 C. New York City is relieved we got down to 26 C and have held it for a week.

Big windows need thick white drapes. Use window fans strategically at night, especially when there's a clear sky so you know the temperature will drop.

We have been in the low 30s here and we don't do air conditioning. Standing on a packed train is bad enough without everyone dripping and stinking all over the place.

30's here also Lance Buses with tiny slats for windows, jam packed full of sweating bodkins & as many foreign students they can cram on. Ive got 2 X 9" fans going in the front room aimed at the dogs & its not enough. The nights are unbearable as well. No let off at all.
Doesn't Marble floors help Figgs ? I can remember how hot Turin was when I used to visit friends there. We used to sleep on the balconies

If even the busses and offices don't have AC then anything around 30 C will be bad. Since it's not cooling down at night you must have high humidity and clouds as well.

Yep, been a mix of quite humid up to really humid.

My office has aircon but the trains (inc tube) that I have to get don't. It is not a pleasant experience. Was 29c when I left London at 18.45 today.

29 C is on the lowest edge of what would be called hot in the summer anywhere in America.

Which is fine when your infrastructure is expecting it!

yes, THAT's HOT! And with no rain you get no evaporative cooling from soil and vegetation. Definitely in a bad way. remember that if you keep a fan on you, you'll dehydrate, so drink plenty, force it down!

Looking at a weather map of the pressure systems in Europe, it looks like the reason for no rain is you've got winds that funnel along spain and germany before crossing the channel to BG, so are not picking up water from the ocean. But Spain is frickin' HOT right now.

dude that's 26 IN my house at night, outside its 36-39. and with 80 % humidity.   luckily the walls of my house are about 3 ft thick and there is a 10 degree difference between inside and the surface of Venus outside.

Big storm last night.... no eclipse viewing but temperature has dropped about 10c.

Much nicer but am still crabbit about the moon thing.

I watched the blood moon last night, it looked rusty brown rather than red.
