That's a long-distance cruiser, designed to be able to take a beating offshore. The sails are a bit smaller and more rugged than day-sailers and the hull and deck layout is designed to give the wind and water as little to grab as possible at the expense of headroom below deck. I don't know this particular brand, but i know the type. We see a lot of them cruising the west coast between Mexico and Alaska. I can't make out the "toys" at the stern, but most of the cruisers here are set up with big self-steering mechanisms and wind generators at the stern to provide power for electronics (particularly useful when crossing to Hawaii or the South Pacific, but they've become a status symbol for many who never use them except to make annoying whiney noises in marinas where others are trying to sleep. )

Is that why they have to sacrifice people in wicker men in order to scrape by a living from the land?

I don't see peace and beauty when I look at those moors, I grew up on moors and hills like that and I know they are pityless and desolate places, that's why I left them for soft southern jessie rolling meadows.

By coincidence I spend 3 rainy days in early march hiking and climbing on Skye in and around the Black Cuillins. That was almost 30 years ago now... There were little bothies where you could find shelter if you looked for them, and there were a few shepherds with dogs gathering sheep in the valleys. One of the most amazing processes to watch! Two guys walking the footpath in the bottom, casually whistling and cherping while the dog on each side climbed rocked more fit for a mountain goat to get above the sheep and drive them down into the bottom, slowly building the flock and progressing through the freezing rain as if they were on a summer stroll. That's the kind of country where there aren't many people, but everybody looks out for each other, even crazy american strangers. I got my first lift from the Black Watch there.

{{Yeah north of England is a bit lower but otherwise much the same type of harsh terrain- merciless bleak outcrops and dangerous unexpected peat bogs that can suck you down, only tourists go and look at this stuff locals keep well away knowing full well its just desolate and bleak and potentially deadly out there- I mean look at how wide those shots are- see anything living? See any birds even? There are less things live in the depths of the Highlands than live in deserts.}}}

Re: Tales of Home [7]
This conversation is reminding me of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell:
When he awoke it was dawn. Or something like dawn. The light was watery, dim and incomparably sad. Vast, grey, gloomy hills rose up all around them and in between the hills there was a wide expanse of black bog.
Stephen had never seen a landscape so calculated to reduce the onlooker to utter despair in an instant. "This is one of your kingdoms, I suppose, sir?" he said. "My kingdoms?" exclaimed the gentleman in surprize. "Oh, no! This is Scotland!"
