I think that's BB-8's mother, and she seems to be in "Momma Bear" mode.

Re: Star Wars [2]
Kinda glad they didn't go with cyborg Luke.
And that early version of BB-8 is not nearly as cute.

Yeah agreed (though I'd assume much of the Luke concepts date from early drafts when he was apparently set to have the 'mentor' role...), though I really liked the grizzled cowboy look that Han had...

Re: Star Wars [2]
Quite even handed i.m.o, I understand the Rey= Mary Sue arguments but I don't think she was quite that bad, it's not like Luke and Annakin weren't super-powered for plot contrivance reasons at times.
I still stand by my initial thoughts-very fun and very safe blockbuster that's a good hybrid between the OT at it's best and a modern action film for the masses, it doesn't improve on the OT or PT in story/worldbuilding terms but the acting, cinematography and action sequences have never been better, it's not necessarily one of the best Star Wars films, and for better or worse is lacking Lucas's input, but for someone who is a cynical bugger by nature (and kinda assumed Disney would play things safe and commercial) and was never a massive fan of the saga it's my 3rd Favorite overall 7.5/10.
I just hope they are bit more surprising in the future.

Re: Star Wars [2]
yep it was safe but they had to pare it back to the essentials, which they did.

Re: Star Wars [2]
But you could see the stitch marks. If they were gonna make a quilt they had to be less deliberate about it. Casablanca feels like an organic quilt of old themes, real; Force Awakens feels like it was made by the numbers. The original Star Wars was a quilt itself, but it felt more like Casablanca.

I agree with that. It was almost a pastiche of itself. it was very unoriginal, actually only BB8 felt fresh to me.

Re: Star Wars [2]
That was pretty good, but the part that made me laugh hardest was Mr Plinkett showing up at the very end.
Anyway, I wasn't thrilled about the rehash-ness (in some ways they were covering the whole OT, but of course ROTJ itself rehashed ANH so there's definitely a lot of the original film's DNA here), but I'm still hopeful that the Episode VIII will go in a more original direction. To some extent my opinion of the film is sort of in limbo until we see how that plays out though. There was a ton of really fun stuff in the movie aside from all that, though. And Rey being good at stuff didn't really bother me. Sure, they could've used a few lines of dialogue to establish things better, but it's not like they really did that with Finn and the gun turrets or his pretty good for a non-Force adept skill with the lightsaber.

Re: Star Wars [2]
The book does explain things a little better than the film. Like Rey having been on the falcon before and having been a pilot. The repairing comes from her years scavenging the ship graveyard. There is a lot that it still doesn't explain but it does a better job than the film.
Also, I actually thought the characters generally had more depth the in ANH. I look forward to seeing how Rey and Kylo play out.
The obvious plot points from the originals were the safe parts... I think there was a fair mix.

Re: Star Wars [2]
I agree that they did a really great job with the characters. ANH definitely had good, well-defined characters but it leaned a bit much on the Hero's Journey archetypes and benefits significantly from the increased characterization in its sequels. The new characters in TFA all came out of the gate really strong.
Re: Star Wars [2]
They were well defined but didn't really have much development throughout.
Leia was a princess trying to save the galaxy all the way through.
Vader was evil man.
Obi wan was the wise old man.
Luke was the naive boy.
Han was the only one that had a change from 'I want money' to 'let's blow this thing and go home.' (Only the second should be in quotes).
I think you are right that the depth of characters for the most part only came out through the rest of the trilogy.
The characters in TFA are far more interesting I think. Now they just need an epic, well explained storyline to follow!!
