TFA must be doing something right, my parents, sister and uncle who between them have probably been to the cinema less than a dozen times in the last decade or so, and can be pretty hard to please when it comes to cinema all LOVED it...in fact my Uncle is seeing it for the second time in three days tomorrow!...certainly not a flawed movie, and an uneven mixture of nostalgia heavy sequel, and modern reboot, but it's very fun family friendly escapism on an epic scale which was all I was really hoping for from the new films.

I know my Uncle was a massive fan of the OT as a kid, so regardless of my personal feelings, I'm rather grateful the new film was able to transport him and others back to their youth in that way

Most everyone I know enjoyed it as well, but I was surprised at the number of people who aren't particularly Star Wars fans complaining a little about the extent of the similarities to Episode IV. Not enough that it ruined the movie for them, except for one of my step-brothers, but I think it says something that (anecdotally of course) some people who haven't seen the original trilogy in years if not decades felt similarly to a lot of fans who are deep into SW stuff.

It's definitely a blast though, and it's exciting that so many people have seen and liked it, so I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer. Razz

Oh yeah don't me wrong, all of them picked up on the similarities (I wonder if Disney being too caught up in the commercialized aspect of things over estimated how badly the prequels were thought of...I think some of the hate (though justified alot of the time) for the P.T was jumping on the bandwagon over time rather than instant disappointment...The Phantom Menace recycled quite alot from ANH anyway...) but it wasn't a film killer for them, as more casual fans I'd say they aren't generally the type of people who look for art over entertainment when it comes to movies, I didn't pick up on many of the similarities until I saw them pointed out online.

I think part of the disappointment was everyone overhyping the idea of sequels to the very movies that arguably invented the big budget sci-fi blockbuster...luckily I was already cynical Laughing

Me too. There was little newness to it. BB-8 was the full extent of their invention.

A little annoyed we have longer to wait, but after the huge sucess of TFA it's not surprising, and of course it will give Rian Johnson more time to fine tune the film and plan for any potential reshoots or script changes.

Weird to think TFA might set a pattern for an annual S.W Christmas film, as it was very much a summer blockbuster i.m.o.

I think Avatar 2 was set for release in Dec 2017 as well, so presumably that will get delayed even further...

I thought it was always going to open in 2017, and that this spin-off whatever film is set for December 2016. I mean they couldn't have just pushed Episode VIII back a whole year.

I think Ep 8 was originally supposed to open in may 2017 (the 40th Anniversary of A New Hope) but they've obviously seen $ signs and realized no studio would have the guts to compete with S.W at christmas.

A tad annoyed it means a longer wait, but it makes sense from a business point of view, JJ Abrams mentioned in interviews the script for TFA was more rushed than he would have liked, hopefully the delay for Ep 8 may prove beneficial.

I kinda like the idea that seeing a S.W film at the cinema could become a christmas tradition for some families.

Can't be too surprised at this. A new film on the actual anniversary would be neat, but I'm sure they'll mark it with something (non-SE Blu-ray release of the original trilogy, please Very Happy

) and the entire anniversary year can be an event of sorts, like Doctor Who did with the 50th recently. If it makes things better for the creatives involved that's even better.

I already didn't think that Avatar 2 was going to make 2017 and I imagine Disney doesn't either. If Star Wars becomes an every Christmas event though (since it'll have at least three Christmases in a row) it could result in an interesting game of studio chicken if/when Avatar 2, 3, and 4 ever actually get made.

Avatar was shit.

well 5 minutes of it was lovely when they zoomed round an exquisite landscape, but the rest was dentist waiting room level one boredom, and I hated all the wars and the military thing. I don't give a toss about the characters and the story itself was trite. Pity there wasn't 2 hours of zooming and flying through those landscapes though.

I haven't seen Avatar in years (last viewing was on Blu-ray sometime in mid-2010) but I remember it fondly. Dunno how it would hold up now though. Story and characters were super predictable but it had the best worldbuilding of any movie I've seen since LOTR and the action is really good (James Cameron is still James Cameron, after all).

Can't say Avatar did much for me either. I don't now recall an adult fantasy film that actually passes muster with me!!! Star Wars are good space adventures so I will watch Episode 7 sometime. If 7 is a return to 4,5 and 6 times, then I could go for that. Nod

Watched Star Wars Monday and watched the Hobbit ee again on Wednesday honestly say i enjoyed The Hobbit more.

I watched TFA for a third time, it's certainly flawed, truncated and overly Disney-fied but I still enjoyed it immensely, for me as someone who was never a huge fan of the saga beyond the pure escapism, it's the third best overall.

And I agree, Avatar was sh*te, I've only watched it once, the effects were impressive at the time, but the movie bored me even as 17 year old (christ it was a long time ago wasn't it?)

I found Avatar laugh out funny bad- the dialogue, the characters, the clumsiness of the message- just everything- nice technical skills on show- but absolutely nothing else, and the worst of nothing else at that.

Cameron tends towards stock character types. Terminator was the only one of his movies to have personalities that didn't make the eyes roll (Aliens doesn't count: he didn't create the main character).
