Well, my comment was kind of unrelated to what was written before it. It was more related to the girl I was interested in rejecting me and hooking up with my kind of sort of best friend.

God, my life sounds like a bad teen movie.

It's safer to confine all dating activity to a separate city. Different planet if you can swing it.

Typically the moment you show interest in someone is the moment you lose all chance with said someone.  We humans are stupid that way.   Note how the medieval notion of courtly love was to throw everything you got at her but never have a chance of getting her.  Yeah.

Next time try stumbling into a relationship by accident.  It helps if at least one of the parties has no clue what's going on.  Knowledge is your enemy here.

(The other approach is to treat it as a game with no emotional investment until you're pretty sure you've caught someone. This is the most common approach.)

well its either because I want to send eye watering photos from the Mexican eel wrangling chapter to Donald Trump or my local paper has a nice piccy competition and I want to send off some fluffy ones. you decide which is more likely.

this is so true. The moment they know you like them, its game over. women know that its better to play hard to get because they know men like the hunt and lose interest once they have 'got'. women don't like it when men are too keen and puppy dog eyed either. women like the slightly off hand 'does he or doesn't he' thing. its a game we all play.
this goes for dating, not for relationships. in relationships the game changes again.

It should be said I had been keeping in touch with her on and off for almost 4, 5 months before I got anywhere close to asking her though. Not that that seemed to change anything.

But she's great, really, and it's fine. I guess I'm just rather vulnerable with this stuff.

I'm in my early 50's and finally stopped being vulnerable about it.  For some people it comes natural and early, it's just a game.  For others we just have become old and crotchety enough we just don't give a hoot any more.  Then it comes as a sudden realization: "what the f*&%! do I care?"

I think you should give up and get crabbitly indifferent about the whole dating situation.  Then you'll have to beat them off with sticks.
