{{ Part of the fun of Peaks is trying to work out just what the buggery is going on and what it all means.
Having re-watched the first four episodes I am willing to take a stab at the parts pertaining to Good Coopers journey back to the world, a bit on his doppelgänger and Bad Cooper, and maybe the owl ring (though that might be a speculative subject in itself).
Warning! This is just me rambling and speculating about one of the most open-ended deliberately open to interpretation sections. This is just how I see it all fitting together so far and what it might mean. Its also completely spoilery
Having re-watched the first four episodes I am willing to take a stab at the parts pertaining to Good Coopers journey back to the world, a bit on his doppelgänger and Bad Cooper, and maybe the owl ring (though that might be a speculative subject in itself).
Warning! This is just me rambling and speculating about one of the most open-ended deliberately open to interpretation sections. This is just how I see it all fitting together so far and what it might mean. Its also completely spoilery

That said, off we go down interpretation lane!
In flashback we are reminded of Laura telling Cooper in the Red Room that she will see him again in twenty-five years.
It turns out that Bob has a time limit on his stay in the world before he has to return to the Black Lodge.
We first encounter Cooper proper when he is with the Giant. And there is almost no colour in anything here.
Now previously the Giant only ever appeared to Dale in Twin Peaks itself, and specifically in the Great Northern Hotel. And his attire is that of old time hotel attendant.
Dale is instructed to listen to a sound which comes from an old fashioned record player, the sort with the amplifying horn.
A repeating pattern of sounds plays as the camera gets closer into the darkness of the horn.
I am taking a stab here that the sound we hear is coming from the room in New York containing the Black Box. And I base this on the fact that a sound with a very similar repeating pattern can faintly be heard during the scene where the box's observer is being distracted by sex, whilst the camera pans across the electrical equipment stored beneath the box, seemingly part of its construction.
As electricity is tied to Lodge events, the similarity of the hole leading out of the box and connected in some fashion to the Other Place and the shot of the record player horn I am thinking there is a connection.
If this is the case then when the giant refers to “someone is in our house” in response to the sounds he may be referencing the glass box room, or the Great Northern. However as the incident with sound is followed almost immediately by the appearance in the box of the strange creature which breaks out to slaughter the observers, I think it may be a reference to whatever that was. But its the bit I am most unsure about in this section.
The Giant also refers to a number 253 which Cooper is to remember. This number is in fact a time- 2.53 pm and is the time when Bad Dale has to return to the Black Lodge and Good Dale can leave. We know this as when Bad Cooper crashes his car due to sickness brought on by being called back his car clock freezes at 2.53. It is also the time on the girls watch when Good Cooper actually leaves.
I also think the Giant is still in the Great Northern Hotel. His surroundings look like a faded version of the great Northern rooms clearly not the red rooms and at the end of this conversion he tells Cooper that Cooper 'is far away' at which point Cooper flickers out of being as if he were just a projection into the Giants location and is back in the Waiting Room/Red Room complete with normal colour.
The Giant may be the first being Cooper encounters after 25 years because it was in Twin Peaks, and the Great Northern itself where Cooper was possessed by Bob and Good Cooper put in the Lodge. It seems some of the Lodge spirits are tied to locale.
The Waiting Room/Red Room itself seems to be a place you have to go to that is between the White and Black Lodges, and in which representatives from both Lodges appear.
Here we find the couch which Dale sits on, and the one armed man, the Romanesque statue also with one cut off arm, which seems in fact be a doppelgänger of the Arm in disguise, I'll come back to that later.
There is a ton could be speculated on these things alone, but it seems to me that the one-armed man and the Man from Nowhere/The Arm are either one and the same being split in two, or symbiotic in some way. Not just by implication that one is literally the missing arm of the other. Despite the Arm having previously appeared as a dwarf. But we will come back to the Arm proper later too.
Laura Palmer now makes an appearance, but aged since her death as if still alive all this time, and tells Cooper she is both dead and alive.
Perhaps implying that she has been in the Waiting Room portion of the Lodge since her death. Before removing her face to reveal beneath a bright glowing interior.
Without further information there are several ways to interpret things.
If you favour the aliens are involved idea then she could be some sort of construction-this might have some backing in the Dougie/Cooper version being later described by the one armed man as having been 'manufactured for a purpose'- or Laura may be some sort of energetic being herself. If you prefer the more shamanistic take on Peaks then it could indicate that all living things are really just bundles of energy, and that the outward appearance is just that, an appearance not the real us. Or you can see it as indicating again of a connection with electricity which the Lodge related events certainly seem to have. Or a combination of all three.
Laura then more or less re-enacts something that happened before, where she whispers something in Coopers ear we do not hear. In the original series we found out the secret she whispered was 'My father killed me.' We don't know yet what it was this time.
But this time after doing so she is violently torn from the room screaming via the ceiling. Leaving Cooper alone again with the one armed man who poses the question of is it the future or the past? Before leading Cooper from the Waiting Room through a red corridor and into a second room to meet the evolution of the Arm.
Regarding Laura its not clear yet what happened or why. Perhaps what she told Cooper broke some some term of her stay there, or perhaps she has simply done what needed to be done to complete the cycle and so was released finally. Or maybe something took her away to prevent her telling Cooper more. I favour the latter as there appears to be a scheme going on by some members of the Lodges to aid Bob and thwart Cooper.
The Arm when we meet him again is no longer a dwarf. Rather he/it resembles a leafless tree, or is somewhat reminiscent of a stripped down nervous system- this effect is attenuated by its organic swaying movement and the brain like object atop the centre trunk. The Arm can still speaks however and even has a mouth of sorts on the brain like blob.
Notably it also seems to fizz and crackle with electricity.
The Arm tells them this is what it sounds like, before giving an example. This is something the Arm also did when in dwarf form, only the sound it made was different. The original sound could be heard in Fire Walk With Me when the camera pans down from the electricity pylon in the trailer park immediately before Agent Chet Desmond finds the Owl Ring and vanishes.
This would seem to connect the Arm to the Ring. As we shall see the One Armed Man is also connected to the Owl Ring and its movements.
The Arm reminds Cooper that he has a doppelgänger, and that Bob is out.
It then informs him that before he can go out, the doppelgänger must return.
This brings up the matter of the doppelgänger and what counts as one.
There are three versions of Dale Cooper in the story at this point in events.
There is Good Cooper trapped in the Lodge. There is Bad Cooper possessed by Bob in the real world. And also in the real world is a third Cooper who goes by the name of Dougie.
Each is physically different from the other. Good Cooper looks as we know him from the tv series only older and is in the Lodge. Bad Cooper has a tan, darker eyes and long greasy hair like Bob, and lives a violent, criminal life and Dougie Cooper is overweight, married and has a young son.
So who is the doppelgänger of Cooper, or are both Bad and Dougie versions the doppelgänger?
I think that's a complicated question, with the answer tied to Dougie's fate. But we will come back to that shortly.
I will briefly delve into the goings on of Bad Dale for a moment, his machinations are murky and unclear, but his overall aim seems clear enough- to avoid having to go back into the Black Lodge when his time runs out.
What is of more interest is he appears to be in communication and cahoots with Philips Jeffreys.
Now he was the FBI agent (played by David Bowie) who went missing then briefly reappeared at Cole's FBI office immediately prior to Bob killing his first victim, Teresa Banks whilst possessing Leyland. Laura being his second victim. In Jeffreys reappearance he spoke of having being to a meeting of Lodge members, it appears to have consisted of representative of both White and Black Lodges and the intermediates of the Red Room. And it took place above a convenience store.
This was the same location used for meetings when the one armed man ran with Bob before switching sides. Jeffreys also knew that Cooper was in the Lodge despite his reappearance occurring before Cooper had even gone to Twin Peaks. Implying foreknowledge, a different way of looking at time, that time occurs differently in the Lodge or that once there you have and are always there or even time travel.
But it is also possible this Jeffreys is, like Bad Cooper, a version possessed by a spirit from the Black Lodge and the original is now also trapped in the Lodge like Good Cooper.
Anyway back to good Cooper in the Lodge. Where having now finished his conversation with the Arm he again follows the one-armed man, this time into another red corridor, where he finds he is alone and that some sort of electrical barrier is preventing him exiting from the other side.
We know from the past that a red corridor seems to connect the red room to the opening/portal in the woods around Twin Peaks in the Sycamore grove. But it appears to be shut to Cooper, it would seem he cannot return the way he came, at least not yet as its not 2.53, so he goes back to the previous room to find the Arm now gone.
Continuing into another identical red room Cooper encounters Laura's father and murderer when possessed by Bob, Leyland, who tells Cooper he must find Laura.
Cooper seems to intend to leave to do so, but is stopped when the surrounds go 'wobbly' and he seem unable to move.
Cutting to an agitated one armed man who says that something's wrong, and the Arm says its his doppelgänger.
Leyland's request would seem to indicate that whatever happened to Laura she is still somewhere that can be found.
Cooper re-enters the red corridor, only this time at the far end of it stands the Romanesque statue with one arm, normally in the red room behind the couch.
When Cooper traverses the corridor and opens the red drapes at the far end he sees a view of the Highway Bad Cooper is currently driving down.
This prompts the statue to transform in a crackle of electricity into a vicious version of the Arm.
It causes the surrounds to distort and the floor to fall pull apart plunging Cooper into blackness as the doppelgänger Arm cries 'Non-existence'
Cooper plunges through a star field like background but that also seems almost vaguely liquid and after free falling for a while lands heavily on the exterior of the glass box which protrudes out the building in New York and into the night air.
He is then sucked inside the glass box appearing to float free of gravity within it like a baby in the womb before being quite violently pulled back from it and plunged back hurtling through the star scape he was previously in as if in free fall.
This section bears some consideration.
We know of at least one place that is connected between the real world and the Lodges, or at least the Waiting Room, the one in the woods around Twin Peaks.
The Glass Box would seem to be something similar, but rather than being connected to the red room it seems to be connected to somewhere else, the starry place it sucked Cooper up from.
So what is that place?
Well the Arm doppelgänger says 'Non-existence' when Cooper falls into it.
So it may be that it represents nowhere, a place between places but not anything in and of itself.
But its certainly not empty. And as Cooper encounters things seemingly in this realm it is possible that the other thing that the box drew in was something else either cast into this place as Cooper was by the Arm or which resides in it. But I have thoughts on that later.
The appearance of this non-existence place looks like you are in space, only blurred and as if seen through thick water, it may be also be connected to the black water/oil substance that is at the centre of the connecting point in Twin Peaks.
There is as far as we know no corresponding pool of anything at the glass box, however it does have the portal which looks directly out over the city to frame the starry sky, and it may be its not the substance that counts but the framing of the stars in a circular portal shape- either as in the glass-box, or by reflection in the case of the black pool in the sycamore grove.
However another indication the box does not connect directly to the Red Room is the lack of the appearance of the red drapes. When Hawk goes to the Sycamore grove at the appointed time the two worlds blend momentarily and we see the red drapes.
When Cooper enters the box there is no sign of them. And when the the other creature enters the box the box first goes black. This is more in keeping with the place Cooper was pulled from than anywhere we have seen in the Red Room area. Though it is possible it is literally black in the Black Lodge, which we have never seen.
However it may be it seems that to get out from the realm of the Lodge Cooper will have to go through this place of non-existence first, for as Cooper continues his free fall plunge through space he finally flies into a massive expanding purple cloud of something and lands on the outside of a massive industrial looking monolith made of steal plates rising up as far as the eye can see into the unseen sky out of a surrounding sea, which seems to also go on for as far as the eye can see as well. And the whole exterior is also tinged in purple light.
There is in the way it is presented an almost birth like quality to it, complete with a comedic take on birth with Cooper seeming to just drop out of the purple cloud. Despite the seemingly vast sea and the soaring building, the way the distance is presented with the purple fading off into darker shades with distance, gives the impression that whilst the space is vast it is contained. A chamber of fluid n which Cooper finds himself.
This part of Cooper's journey could be seen as being the journey all life takes at the very beginning before it even is life. From non-existence into the world.
Dale enters the huge building through its only door and finds himself in a large room, partly circular. In one wall opposite where he enters is a large steel door. Against the right wall is a roaring comfortable fireplace with a comfy couch in front of it.
Sitting on the couch is a women whose eyes are covered over by flaps of skin, which may have at one time been stitched over.
On the wall opposite the fire is a large panel, like an electric box with a circular hole and a two pronged plug shape.
As with the Red Room sound here is distorted and backwards, but unlike the Red Room inhabitants the blind woman's words are completely indistinguishable and not fully formed. Nor are they subtitled as the red room inhabitants are.
Time is also strangely represented here, with moments skipping or jumping back.
The blind woman examines Cooper by touch and tries to tell him something when a loud banging begins on the steel doors. She indicates to Cooper to remain quiet and seems fearful of whatever is banging on the door.
The banging ceases just as Cooper notices the fuse box like thing on the wall. It has the number 15 on it.
He approaches this as the knocking resumes even louder and more ferociously, and the woman becomes agitated and tries to stop Cooper approaching the fuse box, making slashing motions across her neck with her hands and indicating the box.
Instead she leads Cooper away as the time distortions increase and out of the room by another door in the corner previously unseen. She then leads him up a ladder and they exit the building through a hatch.
Only to find the 'building' is now a rectangular metal box floating free in space not large enough to even contain the room below.
It has atop it a mast like structure and a large bell shaped thing riveted onto the roof.
The whole thing bobs and sways as if on an invisible sea, and in wide shots looks similar to a buoy.
All the while the banging from within continues.
The bell shaped thing has two circular marks on it, similar in appearance at a glance to a hallmark.
The bottom one is hard to make out but the top one seems to have a design engraved on it of what looks like a lever or stick pointing upwards to one of three circular objects.
And indeed the bell thing has a lever on its side which the blind woman pulls.
This causes electricity to crackle, seemingly also electrocuting her in the process and blowing her off the roof and out to drift away into space.
The banging now ceases.
This is followed by huge semi transparent face drifting sideways by underneath the box, it says “Blue Rose' before passing on.
Cooper returns to the room below via the hatch only to find that a new woman is in this room on the couch, similar in appearance to the first but not blind (it may be Ronnette Polaski, I am not sure given the actor is much older if so- anyone know?)
And she speaks as they do in the Red Lodge and is subtitled.
Also crucially the fuse box no longer says 15 but 3.
The girl checks her watch, it is 2.53 and a light comes on and the fuse box crackles.
Cooper approaches it and is partly 'singed' and partly pulled towards it. The girl tells him that when he gets there he will already be there. And that he better hurry as her mother is coming- and the banging resumes.
Three events all occur at once here at the same time, though not shown in linear fashion.
As Good Cooper is being pulled through the socket in the fuse box Dougie Cooper has being taken to the Red Room and disappeared, and Bad Cooper is trying to avoid being taken back in and crashes his car.
At this moment all three Coopers are tied by the same experience.
Dougie is sick and then disappears from the world into the Red Room. Bad Cooper manages to put off being sick until 2.53 gas passed, thus not getting taken back.
And Good Cooper emerges from the electric plug socket in the wall of the room Dougie disappeared in to replace him. Thus putting Good Cooper back in the world and completing his, physical journey at least, from one realm to the other.
So what the bugger is all that about exactly?
Well the steel box containing the blind woman, the not blind woman and the fuse box seem to be a crossing point.
Bit like it is a back door.
We know the Lodge members use electricity to travel between worlds or influence them, and we see Cooper being transferred just this way through the fuse box and out the wall socket to reform in the real world.
The first fuse box we see, number 15, Cooper first tries to approach it, but is stopped. The cutting motions the woman makes at this time and the sound which accompany them, particularly the sound are exactly the same as the slashing sound made by the entity in the glass box when it slaughters its observers.
This would seem to indicate that this fuse box, number 15 connected to the glass box.
The symbols on the bell like structure would appear to show thee possible positions for the lever to be set at, indicated by the three circular points.
Pulling the lever, as well as throwing the blind woman off the building into space, also seem to change where the fuse box below is connecting to.
As when Cooper returns to it is now number 3 and is connected to the room Dougie Cooper was in in the real world.
Which is why here we have to consider the very odd Dougie Dale and his fate.
But now we have a narrative to form here out of everything so far to make sense of it.
Good Dale is leaving the Lodge at a predicted date and time. The time being 2.53.
Shortly before this time Good Cooper is returned to the Waiting Room. The one armed man and the Arm prepare him for returning by reminding him of previous events from the past- that he has a doppelgänger in the real world, and through his meeting again with Laura.
At the same time in the real world Bad Cooper is scheming a way to avoid being taken back at the appointed time. And says he has a plan to deal with it.
This plan would seem to involve the creation of a third doppelgänger, the Dougie version.
This is Bad Coopers substitute to be pulled into the Lodge at the appointed time instead of him.
When the time approaches Good Cooper is lead into the Red Corridor where he will re-enter the world when Bad Cooper is removed from it. Pulling back the drapes he sees Bad Cooper driving on the highway- this red corridor leads to this connection point with Bad Cooper where the exchange is to take place.
Bad Coopers plan however has inside help. Mainly from the doppelgänger of the Arm, who throws events off by casting Good Cooper into the place of non-existence.
Why?
Well it appears that the steel box Cooper ends up at is where they need him to be, as its there they have 'hacked' into the real world from and made the connection not to Bad Cooper but to Dougie Cooper, their created substitute.
Dougie, who seems to sell houses, and has just used an empty property for a liaison with an escort says that his arm has gone to sleep and is tingling. And we see that he wears on the hand of that arm the Owl Ring.
This harkens back to Teresa Banks, Bobs first victim, who also possessed the ring and who in the days leading up to her murder complained of her arm going numb.
Dougie then falls to the floor and is violently and unpleasantly sick- throwing up a mix of a nasty black substance, blood and lots of corn. The red drapes appear before him and he vanishes, only to appear in the Red Room with the One Armed man.
Puzzled and confused Dougie asks what's going on only to be told he was manufactured for a purpose which is now over. His arm begins to shrink until his hand is too small to hold the owl ring on and it falls to the floor. Dougies head then turns to smoke and a small golden orb rises up out of his still sitting clothing before he disappears entirely, forming into a nasty black blob which tries to hold onto the golden orb before in a flash of electricity the blob vanishes the golden orb falls to the chair.
The one armed man picks up the globe and the ring, and places the ring on the pedestal in the red room.
At the same time BadCooper is fighting off being sick as Dougie was. He sees the red drapes before him and Dougie sitting in the lodge. But then the minute passes and 2.54 comes round- Bad Cooper has remained and Dougie been taken in his stead. He is then violently sick too and passes out.
But seems reasonably clear then that Bad Coopers plan was to have Dougie taken in his place at the appointed time, and that Dougie was created for this purpose.
So what was Dougie?
Well my guess is that Dougie was an evil spirit in the service of the Black Lodge members working with Bob and that it is the thing which breaks out the glass box and slaughters everyone.
Why? Well partly the orb.
We don't see what the One Armed Man does with it.
But the creature which appears in the box, when it first appears, has momentarily in his hands, or floating just above them, a golden orb like the thing Dougie transforms into, it sonly when it loses the orb, or it disappears at least it goes crazy.
And when the nasty black blob appears out of Dougie it tries to take the orb by engulfing it only for the orb to break free of it and the blob to disappear in a flash of electricity.
My theory is that Bob and co used such an evil spirit to create Dougie, and when his purpose was served it was released.
It was then cast ito non-existence after its release whilst struggling for the orb, and both temporarily got sucked into the glass box, the orb released itself leaving the spirit behind. At which point in a fury it broke out and killed the people in the room.
This would fit time wise- we see Good Dale in the box shortly before the entity appears. And Dale appears there snatched from non-existence on his way to the steel room with the fuse box, next stop reality.
This would also indicate that fuse box 15 is a connection point to the glass box, as the blind women seems to know what is going on there when it at 15, and that the spirit from Dougie Cooper is slashing everyone up.
So to sum up the plot as I see it through the imagery and dialogue presented so far.
Bad Dale wants to prevent going back to the Black Lodge at the appointed time by having a created substitute take his place.
This substitute is a created using a spirit of some kind, and was manufactured by unknown members of one or both of the Lodges, but certainly seeming to include Bob, the Arms doppelgänger, and possibly Jeffreys.
Good Dale is being prepared to leave the Lodge by the one armed man and the Arm, and is sent to the connecting place with Bad Dale where he will switch places.
But the doppelgänger arm prevents this and they send Cooper out via a backdoor connection that links not to Bad Cooper but the substitute Dougie Cooper.
The substitute is taken in place of Bad Cooper who remains in the world. The spirit is released from inside the substitute and cast into non-existence where it gets sucked up by the Glass Box and in rage murders the people there before it is pulled back via fuse box 15 when the lever is pulled, changing the room below to fuse box 3 connected to Dougie's last location.
And it is here Good Dale emerges.
There that wasn't so complicated! Oh there is still the matter of the Owl Ring, the owls and their possible connection to Dougie, we see an owl flying over his house when Good Cooper arrives, and there is a big owl cookie jar in the kitchen- plus his family are odd, off. The Owls are not What they Seem! But I do think thats for a post on its own! This is long enough already!

{{I have never found Lynch unintelligible. All his films are about something. They have subject and they have characters and they have narrative. What they dont have is linear story telling, and often events or ideas are conveyed purely visually rather than through words or actions (which could be argued is truly using a visual medium for storytelling) that's creates a far larger space than usual between the film makers intentions and the experience and understanding the viewer draws from it- which is where the subjective bit comes in with Lynch which again is much wider than is the norm.
For example whilst Twin Peaks clearly includes a story about the White and Black Lodge and the Waiting Room between and those who inhabit it. What those things represent, what value and what judgements we have of them are ours not the filmmakers who do not provide definitive answers, only a subjective view of events through the experiences of the characters involved.
All the story say needs to tell us about Bob is that he is a person from the Black Lodge who can possess other people. What he is exactly, how he does it, why he does it even beyond wanting to, what the Black Lodge is or why it operates this way are left to the viewer to decide from the context of the imagery and sounds which surrounds them. And so for everything else.}}

That's Lynch all over for me. He's portraying himself in an odd beat obscure way. Its like he has these weird dreams the night before & acts them out the next day.

I shouldn't be so harsh on David Fincher. I did enjoy his 2011 version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a lot.
Funny, but I really expected a sequel to that. I suppose it's not happening now?

Apparently Daniel Craig demanded more money for the next two films, which had been planned, and so the production company shut down the sequels. Now, instead, a version of the fourth book is being produced and should come out next year. However, neither Rooney Mara nor Daniel Craig are going to appear in it.

We've got 2 hours of X-files every tuesday. I'm surprised at how many I haven't seen, but am constantly reminded of how good the direction and camera work is, and Mark Snow's music that always fits the mood perfectly. I think for those of us who loved the X files, the production values were at least half of it.

Cripes I remember that sketch Petty It meant so much to them & they made it feel real even tho we knew it was silly I felt so upset when the chap who played Father Ted Crilly died in real life
