I've finally had the time and focus to be able to watch anime more regularly again, but I'm not sure if I have any "when good shows go bad" examples among the stuff I've watched recently. The closest might be Erased, which started off phenomenal and had a relatively weak ending, though I was still a fan of the show as a whole. I just finished RWBY (not technically anime) which is kind of the inverse since it starts off really rough but gets better with each season (four so far) to a surprisingly huge extent. The only exception I'd mention is fight choreography as that was the show's main strength early on, and while it's still good in that respect, the fights haven't been quite the same since the original creator passed away (after season two).

Interesting, I'll look them up

How can they have a trailer without the iconic music?

Re: Television programmes [2]
{{Judge Dredd is coming to a TV screen near you!!!
A tv series is going into production called Mega-City One.
Things I am hopeful about so far-
1. Its being made in the UK.
2. Its being co-produced by Rebellion the parent company who own 2000AD the UK comic Dredd appears in.
3. The title is hopeful to me.
Bit of explanation on that last one- it would on the surface make more sense to stick Dredd somewhere in the title, as that's the most well known thing, with 2 films already in existence with the name in it.
But they didn't- they've named it after the main location- which makes me hopeful this is not in fact a Dredd series as such but will incorporate a lot more - episodes about Anderson and psi division where Dredd might be the guest role appearance rather than star ect.
The comics lend themselves very much to this sort of thing- firstly they are episodic by nature and Dredd is not always the main character and secondly the huge tonal shifts in the Dredd world.
The films struggled with this- the Stallone film incorporated a lot of the humour very well ( "Eat recycled food. Recycled food is good for the environment. And its ok for you.") and it had some of the satire and the seemingly overzealous sentencing of the Judges for what we might consider petty crimes, or no crime at all. But then it also tried to be dark and serious.
The Urban version went the other way, whilst some of the comic humour remains, the darker sort, and there a few subtle sight gags for fans in background details, it pretty much dumps the humour to focus on the dark stuff. Which works better than the Stallone mish-mash but then it fails to convey that side to Dredd's world.
A TV show however allows for different episodes to be tonally different- you can have humorous episodes, like the comic story in which two new immigrants to the city mistake Dredds huge vault like front door to be something that must have valuables behind it- it doesn't its Dredd apartment and he is having a bath. Making Dredd in the Bath an instant comedy classic.
Then you have grim as shit serious stuff like Dead Man, or Necropolis.
With Tv they can switch from satirical, comedy, serious, topical far easier than a single film can.
So high hope of seeing some proper justice dealt out to perps soon!! }}}

Just started watching Twin Peaks, on season 2 ep3 already. It's been a little over an hour since I watched the ending of the second season's first episode, and my heart still hasn't fallen back down to where it belongs. Middle of the day and I'm terrified This show is as twisted and as brilliant as they come. Must watch more, no time for typing.

Re: Television programmes [2]
{{My thoughts on the first four episodes of the new series of Twin Peaks-
- Spoiler:
- If you haven't seen the original two series and the film the first thing I would say is dont bother with this. This is uncompromising Twin Peaks for three of the first four episodes, and slightly less uncompromising Twin Peaks for the fourth.
What I mean by that is that there is no preamble, no gentle reintroduction of characters,no set up. In fact you will be about ten- fifteen minutes into the first episode before anything happens which even resembles a normal narrative structure.
This starts where the last left off.
Good Dale is in the Lodge and Bob, disguised as a Dale doppelganger with suntan and long greasy hair is out in the world killing and causing mayhem.
Its starts with a flashback to Laura in the Lodge telling Dale she will see him again in 25 years. Which is now.
We then proceed for the first three episodes to essentially get the tale of how good Dale is released from the Lodge and back into the world.
Woven into this is the exploits of Bob/Dale, a mysterious glass box with horrendous consequences and another version of Dale, who is married with a young son, overweight and who wears the owl ring- it is this Dale who is replaced when Good Dale eventually makes it back in to the world.
That sort of covers very vaguely and loosely the first three episodes- the fourth is where the quirky, humourous side to Peaks come more to the fore and we start to follow Cole and Albert when they get a report of Dale Cooper having been spotted. Denise makes a reappearance, and we get more of the Twin Peaks Sherriffs department and a hilarious aversion to mobile phones from Lucy.
In tone, and in explicitness in terms of sex, nudity and violence, the first three episodes are closer to Fire Walk With Me than they are to Twin Peaks the tv series, by episode four however the feel of the tv series begins to assert itself, and many of the abstract strands of the first three start to hint at forming into narratives.
But I can see many being put off by the almost restlessness bombardment of surreal imagery that surrounds Good Dales journey out of the Lodge and back into the world.
This covers everything from a floating tank like structure in the blackness of space which is bigger on the inside! or connected to somewhere different, and which floats in nothingness. To the Man from Another Place, or the Arm, having transformed into a swaying leafless tree with something resembling a large lump of chewed gum stuck on it. It can be that surreal.
And Lynch uses every trick in his disorientate, screw with you book- from swooping the camera over the zig-zag floor of the lodge to dizzy you to inter cutting frames from a few seconds previous to disrupt the flow of narrative time, distorting the lens, speeding up and slowing down the film.
In many ways Dales journey from the Lodge back is presented not so much as a coherent narrative to be understood and have explained so much as a series of experiences to have.
But oddly enough for the astute Peaks fan a lot of this imagery is in fact answering some questions form the original series and film- such as why do all the lights flicker in the presence of anything Lodge related in the real world- the answer seems to be because they transfer via electricity (this has been strongly hinted at in the past but is explicit here)
Individually the experiences often dont seem to mean anything, or to be so obscure in their meaning as be unfathomable, and yet the cumulative effect of the those experiences does produce a progression, that becomes a narrative progression that becomes finally the story of good Dale returning.
Its worth hanging in there for the ride.
But it snot going to attract new viewers in and of itself I dont think. And if you liked the original series for its quirky characters, humorous banter, offbeat tone, and weren't so keen on all that red drapes, giants and dream stuff, then you are going to have to get through three episodes of that to really to get to the stuff you like.
If on the other-hand you like Lynch's forays into this abstract landscape then your going to be in Lynch heaven, and you get all the character quirkiness stuff too when it gets to it so you are definitely onto a winner if your in that category.
As a huge fan of Lynch and the original series and film I am loving it. I appreciate that they didnt try to simplify what had become before, or draw it back in anyway to make it more accessible. On the contrary they have not just started where they finished, they have put the foot on the pedal and just run with it hard and fast.
Looking forward to the rest.

Re: Television programmes [2]
Since I don't do cable (pay as opposed to free broadcast) I haven't seen any of the new Twin Peaks, but from Petty's review I think they made a misstep by not doing quirky characters right up front. That's what will hook in new viewers.

Re: Television programmes [2]
{{I would say it doesn't even bother trying to hook in new viewers- its a straight up continuation. If you are not already up to speed on the Good Lodge, Bad Lodge, Bob and Cooper's story then you wont have a clue whats going on- for the fan its the same but its matter of putting the imagery into whatever construct you had built around the original imagery for yourself, so its fun. But without that knowledge there is no context at all to a lot of what happens in the first three episodes in particular.
In much the same way the film Fire Walk Wit Me was uncompromisingly dark and disturbing start to finish, making a very unnerving, uncomfortable viewing experience- this is uncompromisingly abstract to begin with, making for a disorientating, and question filled experience.
I honestly have no idea what a viewer would make of it who had no prior Peaks knowledge whatsoever. }}}
