Couple more great lines of dialogue that stood out on a second watch-
Davros- “Hunter and prey held in the ecstasy of crisis, is this not life at its purest?”
The Doctor- "“I try never to understand, it’s called an open mind.”

Yep, indeed, great thoughts. So, Capaldi really can play guitar ? didnt know that. I was watching as my son plays & when it wasnt plugged into an amp it still sounded "electric & throaty" ? but heyho, Did I like last nights opener ? Yes I did ! I now wanna know more about Davros the child, & obviously that was the linch pin, doesnt everyone feel protective, responsible & saddened by a child in need & are left asking why did Dr bugger off & leave said child in that field of "eyeball hands" ? I least liked the medieval rock party I have to say, but I understand why it was done, just my personal thingy

anyway moving on from the why are you still watching if you hate it stuff. I am always looking forward to any new episodes, call me naïve if you wish.
so basically what happened in this episode?
so basically what happened in this episode?
- Spoiler:
- from what I could see it was a case of the Emperors new clothes. Nothing much happened, they looked for the Doctor, they found him, Davros got tetchy, and in the last minute of the show Missy, Clara and the TARDIS got zapped. it was an episode about nothing much. all dressed up to look like fanwank. To hide the fact it was flimsy they spent the budget on dark and scary effects and Voldemort on skates. fuck me sideways what was that stilted and preposterous medieval party thing? If the TARDIS is destroyed how did he go back in time to save his friends, what with no time machine. What is all this rot about it suddenly being his last day and giving missy his his will? do they make this shit up as they go along. oh hang on its Moffat. silly me.

Had to purchase the Christmas special on Google because there were no torrents or legit links.
It was pretty good. A bit too much going back and forth with the dreaming, and a bit too many fake outs (you could see the last one coming a mile away).
Thinking I might buy season 9 so I can keep up with everyone.

Re: Doctor Who [11]
so basically what happened in this episode? - Figg
- Spoiler:
Well it confronted the main character with not only a huge moral dilemma that cuts the core of who he is as a person, but also one he had posed to himself as the 4th Doctor whilst contemplating his impending act of genocide.
That in itself is more than enough to hang the story on as the core.
But we of course get a lot more we got ideas galore, ideas which each one of themselves could easily have been spun ut into episodes in the past, the episode is simple chocked full of ideas, and not only lots of ideas but it gives us lots of diverse and fantastic backdrops to set them against.
So off the top of my head ideas wise we get- the creepy as hell mutation as weaponry of the Hand-mines, a brief but impressive look at a Jaled/Thall battle field, the Dalek snake/Mara messenger, all earths aircraft frozen in time, the Doctor going on a three week bender in which he gets to play electric guitar whilst riding atop tank into an arena in 10th century Essex, a space station that is in fact a building on an invisible planet which becomes visible to you when your body absorbs enough of its atmosphere.
Its also crammed full of generally excellent big reveals and cliffhangers- the revelation the child is Davros right at the start, the reappearance of Missy, the Doctor's entrance, Dvaros having the sonic, the Doctor leaving the child Davros to die, the reveal of Skaro, the apparent deaths of Clara and Missy. The seeming destruction of the TARDIS. And the final big reveal of the Doctor seeming to go back in time to save Clara by murdering the child Davros.
For a standard 50 minute episode its both crammed with ideas and big moments, and at the same time the unveiling of each part, thinks to it being a two parter (which going on the spoilered reviews of part 2 is even better) is never rushed, nor is there the often messy rush to a conclusion a single part often suffers from.
On top of that its a good basis for a story- Davros is dying and he wants to see the Doctor, the meeting is tied in some way to events on the battlefield and how they really unfolded (as yet to be revealed) and the Doctor knows he has to go to the meeting and puts it off for as so long as he can before his friends find him, and in doing so lead Davros right to them, they are imprisoned, taken the hidden and rebuilt home planet of the Daleks, Skaro, the Doctors two closest living friends are apparently executed and the Doctor goes against all he stands for and seems to confirm the dying request of Davros, that he admit compassion is wrong, in order to save his friends from that fate by murdering a child yet to commit any crimes.
There is nothing wrong with that as a Doctor Who Dalek story in my view.
It also simply has some superb writing in it-
'I try never to understand -- it's called an open mind.'
Davros- Doctor... Doctor... Doc-tor...
Colony-You are dreaming, Lord Davros.
Davros- No. I am... anticipating.
'Kate, we can't just phone the Doctor and bleat, he'll go Scottish.'
'There's a light breeze coming from the east, this coffee is a buzz-monster in my brain, and I'm going to need eight snipers.'
Clara- Must be love.
Missy- Oh, don't be disgusting. We're Time Lords, not animals! Try, nano-brain, to rise above the reproductive frenzy of your noisy little food chain, and contemplate friendship. A friendship older than your civilisation, and infinitely more complex.
'Oi, you, sweaty one, on your knees. Let's have a goodbye selfie for your kids.'
'spent all day yesterday in a bow tie. The day before in a long scarf. It's my party, and all of me is invited.'
'You want to know how dangerous I am? Davros sent YOU. You know how stupid you are? You came!'
'How scared must you be to seal every one of your own kind inside a tank?'
'I approve of your new face, Doctor. So much more like mine.'- Davros
Davros- Do you know why you came, Doctor? You have a sense of duty. Of guilt, perhaps. And certainly of shame.
Doctor- You flatter me.
Davros- Pity. I intended to accuse.
'Where does an old man go to die, but with his children?'
Doctor- What are they going to do? Tell me, what?
Davros- Who can say? You know what children are like.
'I gave the Daleks life. I do not control them.'
'See how they play with her. See how they toy. They want her to run. They NEED her to run. Do you feel their need, Doctor? Their blood is screaming. "Kill! Kill! Kill!" Hunter and prey, held in the ecstasy of crisis. Is this not life at its purest?'
Doctor- Why have I ever let you live?
Davros- Compassion, Doctor. It has always been your greatest indulgence. Let this be my final victory. Let me hear you say it, just once. "Compassion... is... wrong."
I think all of the above is basically what happened in this episode and why overall, from fan reaction to press reaction, it is being met with general approval.

Re: Doctor Who [11]
- Spoiler:
- sorry but that dialogue is meaningless pap. The basis of the storyline is so hackneyed a person from Hackney would be ashamed of the name Hackney. The dilemma of would you go back in time and kill kid Hitler or in this case Davros, is just not very original or interesting. and we have had 50 years to understand that the Doctor would NOT kill kid Hitler, that's his schtick, if Moffat decides to change the canon and actually kill kid Davros he is a bigger wanker than I ever imagined. Its 99% filler with a final 'why don't they go the whole hog and zap the lot of them and have done with it'. moment.

Re: Doctor Who [11]
I think I know whats going to happen next episode. its glaringly obvious.
- Spoiler:
- The Doctor is going to go back and exterminate the Handmines, thus giving Davros one shred of compassion, thus Clara, Missy and the TARDIS are saved. All that moral dilemma rot about killing kid Davros, is as I said, just smoke and mirrors dressed up in glossy special effects. its empty and worthless, and people get sucked into it.

Re: Doctor Who [11]
The episode got an AI (Appreciation Index) of 84 out of 100, which is pretty damn good -1 point off excellent but then first part of a two parter and no conclusion often has a slight knock, but a very impressive score none the less.
What I found more interesting was that out of the 5000 participants just over half 'strongly agreed' the episode was 'fresh and new' Which for a show in its 51st year and its 10th since the revival that's rather remarkable all considered.

'Doctor Who The Magician's Apprentice was Doctor Who's biggest ever première in the states for the key demographic of Adults aged 18-49.
Overall the episode had 2 million watching, with 1.1 million being between 18-49, nearly doubling the S8 average, making BBC America the third most watched channel in that demographic for the timeslot.
The channel beat the big 4 broadcast networks. Out of 100 returning dramas, Doctor Who is one of just 14 dramas to show any growth from its prior season premiere.
All tracked demographics showed increases from the season 8 average with the most significant increases seen among the younger viewers.
The episode was the #1 most social drama of the night based on ListenFirst's Digital Audience Ratings for Television. It was the #1 TV brand on Tumblr, the #1 drama on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and the #2 drama on Instagram, following The Walking Dead. It was the #1 most social drama of the week. Unconfirmed rumour- David Tennant and Catherine Tate to renunite for Doctor Who Big Finish audio adventures:
http://blogtorwho.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/david-tennant-and-catherine-tate.html
If this is true (Big Finish haven't commented as of yet, though Tennant has worked with them several times before, and he's already stated in the past he'd be happy to do audios...) it's probably going to be a day one purchase for me, although I've grown somewhat less fond of Tennant's take on the doctor, him and Tate remain my favourite team from New Who, and Series 4 remains my favorite, if Big Finish come near that in tone or style I'll be pretty pleased...
Though I'd still have concerns that Big Finish may be overworking themselves (including spin offs there's at least 3 or 4 who related releases a month, and probably over 50 stories annually) and given Tennant's ongoing popularity particularly in the UK, any potential audio series could detract attention from Capaldi...

Re: Doctor Who [11]
A contender for best episode of that series Turn Left, and were it not for is continuity heavy plot would be a contender for one of the best episodes of Who. It also comes at the end of probably the best run of episodes in 10's time: Silence in the Library, Forest of the Dead, Midnight, Turn Left.
I suspect if BF does get license to make NuWHo audio they will be released when the tv show is off air. I would expect the BBC to stipulate something like that to avoid any clashing. The really big one though is if they do get the license will they ever persuade Eccy into their studio?
Lindallee reviews the latest episode- remarkable to think this little girl has been reviewing episodes since back in Tennants day! Still think she is going to be the first American showrunner when she grows up-
Always good to see how the kids are responding, especially an episode as creepy and dark at times as this one was, turns out just as in my day, kids love creepy and dark!

Re: Doctor Who [11]
I've been thinking more about the BF 10th Doctor thing- I don't like it.
Not that I don't want to hear them I do. But I am not keen at all on the idea of two Doctors running at the same time, the more I think about it the less I like it.
Firstly its not fair on the current Doctor, whoever that maybe to have any direct competition in the role.
Who is a show which relies on survivability on being able to change its lead actor every few years, part of what makes that work is the primacy and singularity of the role- you get the Doctor you get as it were and that's that. But not if alternative recent Doctors are hanging about in new stories elsewhere.
But perhaps most importantly the production teams main argument against the BBC letting Worldwide flog the cinema rights to someone to do a 'version' for cinema is that there should never be two Doctors at the same time in competition.
This would start to erode that argument.

It's only a rumour at this stage (though Big Finish haven't commented at all...last time rumours of 10th Doctor audios were doing the rounds, they refuted them almost immediately...they have also taken their forum offline recently without warning )
But I am not keen at all on the idea of two Doctors running at the same time, the more I think about it the less I like it
Well, there was that other rumour about 2016 being specials or another split series, if the BBC were willing to let Big Finish have the rights to a New Doctor, it makes sense to give it to the most popular (in the UK at least)

Agreed, Moffat nixed a McGann Tv spinoff for similar reasons, it kinda smacks of a lack of confidence in Capaldi i.m.o.

As I said above, I'd probably buy these straight away, but Tennant's been gone barely 5 years, it's not long enough for me to get nostalgic about him...Eccleston on the other hand...
But perhaps most importantly the production teams main argument against the BBC letting Worldwide flog the cinema rights to someone to do a 'version' for cinema is that there should never be two Doctors at the same time in competition
In fairness I don't think even Tennant audios will be that big, certainly bigger than the Classic Doctors, but still a pinprick in the relative scheme of things, even the recent Torchwood audios don't seem to be that widely known about, and that has a massive fanbase (many of whom seem to think an audio series is a poor replacement and threat to a TV series-it's not Big Finish's fault the BBC has no interest or resources to continue it on TV...)

Re: Doctor Who [11]
I dont see any evidence of a lack of confidence in Capaldi.
And whilst I dont think 10's on BF will make a ginormous dent in things it sets the precedent which is more worrying long term.
If the BBC do rest the show next year it wont be the first time, in many way the shows first 'reboot' happened that way. It took a year off between 2 and 3 in preparation for the shift to colour. They got in a new Doctor, a new production team and changed the setting- from TARDIS and all of space and time to UNIT HQ.
I doubt it will be so radical as that though.
