Much more preferable than PJ directing an episode. Nod

I'd be tuning in, that's for sure! It would certainly be interesting!

In one of the first episodes of the TV series they had her sing too, and it was equally cringeworthy.

Love this, I love how Capaldi answers questions- if they address it to the actor they get the actor speaking, if they address it to the Doctor, they get the Doctor speaking Very Happy

Naw, I can't even get Dr Who (I don't do cable).  The only reason you find me on the Games of Thrones thread is because of the books, and then I watch the shows on video a couple years behind the broadcast.  The Who universe is too lengthy to make any attempt to catch up with.

The Who universe is too lengthy to make any attempt to catch up with.- Halfy

No, you couldn't be more wrong, it has no official canon, only licensed Who- and mos tof it is contradictory- its a story where time can be changed every episode altering history- that's why its lasted 50 years, you can jump on anywhere, series starts are usually good, most recent regen is normally a best choice if it wasn't to long ago (13 episodes ago as it currently stands).
But just jump in with the new series I say, anything you need to know will be explained, the rest you just go with the flow- a few episodes in you will have the feel for it. Trust me its true when they say there really is nothing else like it on Television, anywhere.

Halfy, you can start with Doctor 9 and 10 to understand what Petty whines about and me and Figgy likes.
Then, watch "Vincent", "The lodger" and "Closing time" and then directly to Capaldi's doctor.

I am going on the assumption Halfy was looking for a minimum of episodes to have to watch before being able to jump in, I still think jump in with the new series is a good enough place. Going all the way back to 9 now is 10 years worth of series to watch.
Assuming Halfy likes the look of the new series then I have no doubt 9, 10 and 11 will be paid a visit in due course (and some choice classic too eventually)

I wouldn't recommend it. The plot is stand alone, but there is important development between Doctor and companion that sets up their starting relationship for the new series and addresses how they parted at the end of the series.

edit- hold on this is Last Xmas we are talking about isnt it? drunken

Jumping in can be done at any time. Most series on TV have a 'previously on....." to give you a clue of what you should know. I've started watching a lot of TV series this way. Star trek tng, Avatar, NCIS, Buffy, Angel, Bones, Doctor Who... That was pre netflix and such of course.

In fact were you to just jump Halfy the perfect place to start would be right here right now with the prologue to the opening episode (now in HD and officially up on the BBC page), and if it just leaves you with a lot of questions be happy in the knowledge that the same goes for the rest of us!

I get a liiiitle bit tired of these female mystic characters who profess to have a long history with the Doctor and act familiar with him and yet have never appeared in the show before.

The only way to jump in, is with the first episode of NuWho with 9 and Rose. with the episode called Rose. and then you will find out just how crap its got with the most recent lot. Theres no point in starting with the weakest most dreary episodes first. like you wouldn't start with season 5 of Game of Thrones would you?

Doctor Who [11] - Page 19 Empty Re: Doctor Who [11]

Post by malickfan Sun Sep 13, 2015 1:16 pm

I still haven't got round to watching 'Last Christmas' yet...

Really liked Capaldi's performance in that prequel, now he's got over the angst and soul searching of whether he's a 'good man' I think we are going to see some great character growth, judging from the trailers the snark and darkness of Series 8 are still there in spades, but he definitely seems to have mellowed into a more outwardly confident, yet emotionally vulnerable 'rebel timelord', I'm glad Capaldi and/or the writers took the risky approach and decided to develop the character overtime (Smith and Tennant's doctors seemed to be more or less totally figured out within two or three eps), Capaldi can be a very sutbtle actor, and providing he gets stronger character material to work with this season I think he's well on his way to entering my top 3 doctors Nod

Kinda weird they gave the impression the Doctor and the Karn priestness have a long and fulfilling relationship as so far all she's done is resurrect him from death, and coerce him into throwing away his moral code and becoming a warrior, that's got to lead to some awkward conversations between the two Laughing

I've got a feeling the rumours reported by The Daily Mirror months ago about a certain character returning are going to be true...

It wont ruin anything as its just the Doctor and the head of the sisterhood, it doesn't mention Clara (at least not directly, if at all).
