For once I am glad the council we have here are as tight as a frogs arse under water ! I can have a good look at beautiful starry nights as I walk my hound without the glare of street lamps We've had some stunning nights where you can clearly see constellations.

Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
My back garden is quite light polluted but it would take too long to get to better skies.
Need to get away from the south east for some real dark skies though. Once I get better at using my equipment I will take a weekend away and see what I can get.
Be good to document my progress along the way though.

Apparently Betelgeuse is around 34% dimmer than it was 100 days ago.

Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
I'm going with option B. Just seems more likely. But perhaps they can factor that out by looking a different wavelengths and seeing whether the comparison among wavelengths matches the model of a dimming star or a cloud of dust.

Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
Thanks. I am going to give the processing part a real go this weekend. There should be more red and blue colour on there but not sure if that is something I can bring out or if I just didnt get enough data from my imaging.
Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
More data shouldn't change the ratios of colors once you have as much as you already have. I'm thinking nearly every photo we see has been processed to bring up color levels. Just a matter of subtracting equally from all three bands (taking out the white) then turning up the contrast.

Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
More data helps even out the noise and boost some fainter detail.
Better data will help with what I can do about colours. There is enough light pollution in my area that it impacts the overall output.
That said, I will be reprocessing this weekend as I am sure I can get a better image.

What's the dark blob around x = 0.7 y = 0.2?

Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
I like the saturated look of the black in this one, looks more like deep space. Did you use a nonlinear filter (gamma correction)? If so the dimmer details will be gone.

Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
That was the same image as the original, just with my focus or trying to get the colour out rather than the detail.
I am sure there is a balance of both to be found!

Wow. Well done that man. That's very very good.

{{ Stunning stuff Lance- for your first attempts, or as any attempt, these are superb.
Hope you dont mind, took the liberty of some tweaks just to deepen the blacks, up the contrast with the light bits and bring out the colour a touch more. }}

Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
That's looking pretty damn good, Lance! Though I like the saturation in Petty's image I think he lost detail by that process - less nebula.

Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
That is the problem with not having dark skies... I cannot get enough data without also picking up lots of light pollution so I can only either get some colour and darkness, but lose the nebulosity or gets lots of other detail and lose the colour.
Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
So a 64 year old flat earther built himself a rocket so he could go 5000 feet to "the edge of space" (um...) and it went up and crash landed, killing him of course.
One of the comments: "so now he's a very flat earther."
I know I shouldn't laugh....

Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
Well, while it is never good that someone gets killed when they are doing something like this... I do wonder if he bounced off the dome.
Re: Space and The wonders/mysteries of The Universe
So that's why he crashed! Damn fool should have known.
