Got a text from my mom today that "my" cat Fred (ie, the one I picked out from the shelter and who was generally more attached to me than the rest of the family) has a possible tumor. They might know for sure in two weeks. Fred's a few months over 13 now (we never knew his exact birth date but he was born in August-ish so we assigned him the same birthday as me, August 8th). His weight problem got worse in the past few years in part because my mom stopped letting him outside since he was getting into regular fights with the cat of our pet-neglecting neighbor from across the street (understandable after the vet bills). I stopped living there more than three years ago though and haven't seen Fred at all in about six months because going back to that house makes me miserable every time. But yeah.

Sorry for the weird emotional ramble. Here's my favorite picture of Fred to make up for it. Never been sure why the photo is sepia-toned; a weird proto-Instagram effect from mid-2000s flip phones, maybe? Idk.

Pets are family, and it hurts when the natural process of death accelerates. The people and animals that we love are slowly taken away. It's important to have photos of happier times, and from your picture, Eldo, it looks like you and Fred got along famously.

Thanks bungo. I think that's a good way of looking at it. I spent a while yesterday looking through old photos and I'm gonna drive over there tomorrow after a doctor's appointment to get to see him, so that should be good.

He's apparently doing okay, or at least doesn't seem to be about to kick it, though I didn't get a straight answer out of my mom about whether or not he actually has a tumor. I might go see him again this week if I can borrow a car for long enough (mine has yet to be officially declared totaled since the holiday has delayed things, but I'm not expecting it back).

Awh  I hope he will be ok for a while yet. My little fluff ball is 15yrs old & is getting frail & doddery. She had extra cuddles this Christmas, in case, you know.
