The physics behind that wasn't worked out until the 1980's or thereabout by a guy named Thomas Kane. His insight was treating a cat as two cylinders attached by a flexible spine, which is not an obvious way to model a cat, but it worked.

I don't think I've posted a pic of our Xena before. Somehow I can't seem to get a good photo of her. She's part Main Coon, which I guess is why she has a slightly lion/sphinxy look. She has quite a mane going on if it's not tamed.
