Seeing as Pippin was heir to a substantial part of the Shire and next in line to be Thain, him stealing a farmers crops does seem a bit much.

Yet in the films the first time we see them they are stealing fireworks, and the next time we see them they are dancing on a table whilst drinking and the third time we see them they are stealing crops.
But then given their personalities bear little to no resemblance to their book counterparts either I shouldn't really be surprised they are completely misrepresented in status too.

Oh, I think Pippin was pretty silly in the book too. Just a different class of silly.
Merry was quite different though, with his knowledge of the Old Forest and Bree he seemed to be the one of the four who had any knowledge of the outside world. They kind of made him into a Pippin Mark 2 in the films.
