I liked her , I am a big fan of Michelle Gomez already so that might help, but I think she could develop very nicely -especially if Moffat has been looking back at the interplay between the original Master and the 3rd Doctor.

As to 'always' they never stopped being best friends, the bonds were never broken- for all I dislike the RTD Master storyline RTD at least was also of that opinion-

MASTER: You still haven't answered the question. What happens to me?
DOCTOR: You're my responsibility from now on. The only Time Lord left in existence.
JACK: Yeah, but you can't trust him.
DOCTOR: No. The only safe place for him is the Tardis.
MASTER: You mean you're just going to keep me?
DOCTOR: Mmm. If that's what I have to do. It's time to change. Maybe I've been wandering for too long. Now I've got someone to care for.
(Lucy shoots the Master. The Doctor catches him as he staggers back.)
JACK: Put it down.
DOCTOR: There you go. I've got you. I've got you.
MASTER: Always the women.
DOCTOR: I didn't see her.
MASTER: Dying in your arms. Happy now?
DOCTOR: You're not dying. Don't be stupid. It's only a bullet. Just regenerate.
MASTER: No.
DOCTOR: One little bullet. Come on.
MASTER: I guess you don't know me so well. I refuse.
DOCTOR: Regenerate. Just regenerate. Please. Please! Just regenerate. Come on.
MASTER: And spend the rest of my life imprisoned with you?
DOCTOR: You've got to. Come on. It can't end like this. You and me, all the things we've done. Axons. Remember the Axons? And the Daleks. We're the only two left. There's no one else. Regenerate!
MASTER: How about that. I win.

Moffat deliberately echoes this scene in Death in Heaven-

DOCTOR: No. No, don't you dare. I won't let you.
CLARA: Old friend, is she? If you have ever let this creature live, everything that happened today, is on you. All of it, on you. And you're not going to let her live again.
DOCTOR: Clara, all I'm doing is not letting you kill her. I never said I was letting her live.
CLARA: Really?
DOCTOR: If that's the only thing that will stop you, yes.
(Clara hands over the weapon.)
MISSY: Seriously. Oh, Doctor. To save her soul? But who, my dear, will save yours? Say something nice. Please?
DOCTOR: You win.
MISSY: I know.

I thought Michelle Gomez was hammy in the extreme. I don't think it would have succeeded without her particular set of features, foxy whatevs, I much preferred Simms, you could almost believe that the two of them had once been friends but it had gone bad. Gomez doesn't ring true as far as the past friendship goes, she is just flirty and that's because Moffat made her a woman, like that's what women do, flirt. Rolling Eyes its just so tired and reductive.

The Master was also flirty towards the Doctor when RTD wrote him- you didn't complain about that.

The Master from the very beginning has always delighted in making people uncomfortable, on emotionally effecting them- he/she likes to manipulate peoples emotions.
Everything about Missy in series 7 is designed to wind up and manipulate the Doctor- her choice of Clara, dressing in mockery of Victorian nanny Clara, kissing the Doctor its all designed to throw him, jeep him off balance and mess with his head- the entire plot- that she wants to give him an army is all about this sort of manipulation- as is her lying about Gallifrey- its all to mess with the Doctor on an emotional level (and it worked as he had a emotional breakdown after realising it was a lie)- just as the Simms version refusing to regen (when he had a plan all along) was another means of messing with the Doctor emotionally.

Missy's portrayal is entirely consistent with the RTD incarnation. They are both over the top, both overly frantic, both master manipulators of people and their emotions, and both take pleasure in that. And they are both flirts. An the Master has been a ham since his very first appearance. Its part of the charm of the character, a bigger than life over the top villian of the twirly moustache type.

I thought Simms nailed that combo and Missy didn't. Simms could switch from sane and reasonable to unhinged in an instant, that's what made him scary. Missy was just one note unhinged with no nuances. she was boringly mad all the time.

nope. he was switching from eerily normal to psychokiller in the blink of an eye. that's why he was scary, you don't know what you are getting. His wife was unnerving to watch too. His portrayal of being barking mad was excellent. Missy on the other hand is never 'normal' you know just by listening her hamming it up that this is a nutter.

Same as Missy- nothing crazy about her when you see her being too busy in the Netherspehe, or when she is meeting the people who have died because of the Doctor.
Id say wait till we see more of her before judging that aspect of her character.

But even n the quiet stuff Sim is still scenery chewing- and thats what he should be doing when playing the Master.
In fact its the reason I dont even mind the TV Movie version too much- I thought the actor got that aspect right- the flamboyance over the top scene chewing camp aspect.

From part of the 50th stuff- Strax's field report on a;l the Doctor's incarnations.

Personal favourite is his appraisal of 9-

'No9 started with a strong military focus and a flair for smiting species. But his affection for a yellow headed earth-boy squandered this promise.' Laughing

I didn't think Roberts was that bad either, much like the TV film itself, he's very cheesy and American for some reason, but oddly sinister in his own way and felt vaguely like an extension of Classic Who, he balanced camp with menace well enough to provide his own stamp on things (the fact that he's also a shapeshifting snake thing that can apparently teleport into the Tardis at will is best left forgotten...).

Simm gave a stronger performance, but in some ways I think I prefer a ludicrously camp Master in on the joke, rather than a bad shit insane one fond of dancing to the Scissor Sisters.

Gomez is about as good as Simm in my book, but I was just dissapointed the Master came back yet again...

Some of Tom Baker's Big Finish audio plays are to be shown on BBC Radio:

These have been out on CD/Download for several years, but it's good to know the Beeb is taking a more active notice of BF's output.

It's Official Torchwood returns in Audio Form, via Big Finish

cheers

http://www.bigfinish.com/news/v/torchwood

Big Finish proudly presents John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood - an all new series of audio dramas based on the fantastic Doctor Who spin-off series.

Torchwood, the intrepid team of alien investigators, returns in a series of six audio productions, as part of a licensing deal with BBC Worldwide.

Once again, the Torchwood team will be led by the irrepressible Captain Jack, as played by John Barrowman - who broke the news of the series return on his radio show on Sunday evening.

Conceived as a spin-off from Doctor Who, Torchwood was created by Russell T Davies (Doctor Who, Cucumber, Banana, Queer as Folk) and made its debut on television in 2006. The top secret organisation Torchwood saved Cardiff (and often the world) from alien menaces and terrifying forces, trying to keep the city safe from the inter-dimensional rift that ran through it. In charge of Torchwood was Captain Jack, a man who has been called: “A companion to the Doctor, a rogue Time Agent, an immortal, a dangerous con-man, and very good at parties.” Captain Jack can't be exterminated or trusted, and there's just no stopping him.

The new series of audio dramas will each focus on different members of the Torchwood team, exploring the impact that a mysterious event has on them. Starting off the range will be John Barrowman, who stars in The Conspiracy, a deadly thriller by David Llewellyn, which is released September 2015.

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies says: “Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it's finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish."

“What's great about Torchwood is that it is as unstoppable as Captain Jack and just as persuasive,” says producer James Goss. “Torchwood has been a ratings success on nearly every BBC channel, and it's one of the few UK series to translate to America. It's already been a series of iPlayer-topping audio plays, and we are thrilled to continue it. It’s just so exciting to be starting off the range with a drama starring John Barrowman – he leapt at the chance to display a whole new side to Captain Jack.”

Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery says: “It's fantastic that we will be bringing Captain Jack back to life (for perhaps the thousandth time!) with Big Finish. There are many new Torchwood tales to be told and I can't wait for Jack and his team to defend the Earth once again. I am very grateful for the continuing faith that both the BBC and Russell T Davies have shown in us and very excited to enter into a new world for Big Finish.”

Executive producer Nicholas Briggs says: “Torchwood is something we’ve wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told. Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life. We’re starting off with these more intimate, focused releases and will then move on to bigger casts and even wider scope. We’re very much looking forward to working with all the cast and it’s been such a pleasure liaising with Russell T Davies about this. He couldn’t have been more supportive and helpful. Our Torchwood producer, James Goss, has really hit the ground running and his tangible enthusiasm is already proving rather an inspiration to us.”

Additional cast members for the series will be revealed later.

Torchwood: The Conspiracy will be released in September 2015, with the remaining five instalments following monthly from January 2016.

You can pre-order all six release now, both individually, or as part of a subscription.

For many more details, watch this space over the coming months.

Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) returns in Torchwood, all new audio adventures based on the popular Doctor Who spin off series.

Torchwood - a clandestine organisation outside the government, beyond the police. An elite team of operatives defending Cardiff and the world from alien menaces and terrible forces, keeping the city safe from the interdimensional rift that runs through it.

Led by the irrespressible Captain Jack Harkness, former Time Agent and companion to the Doctor, this new series of stories find the Torchwood team caught up in a dangerous event which will impact their lives forever.

The series begins with The Conspiracy, released in September 2015 - and the story will continue in five further releases beginning Janurary 2016.

I was never a massive fan of Torchwood (though Children of Earth was outstanding), but it's very good news nonetheless, and bodes well for a potential full New Who license.

I hope RTD is closely involved (if only to take some of the strain of Big Finish's small crop of writers-counting spin offs there is probably north of 40 Doctor Who related releases a year...)

Not sure how they will handle the more mature tone of Torchwood as BF's recent releases seem to have cut down on 'adult' subject matter.

I wonder what is next? The Pasternaster Gang, The 'Lost' Sarah Jane Adventures?

(Torchwood was recently mentioned in the Big Finish adaption of RTD's 1996 7th Doctor Novel Damaged Goods-for obvious reasons it wasn't in the original book, but going off on a tangent The Time War was also apparently directly referred to in this audio for the first time in a Bf audio Suspect )

-I must admit a small part of me thinks this is just an excuse for the BBC not to stump up the money for further TV series spin offs...
