True, but I was sick of the dozens of people in the other thread and especially in the new director thread telling me that I was disrespectful to the memory of GDT and that I should shut up. It really was as if he had died. Just trying watching the first minute or so of TORn's podcast on the matter without (1) laughing at the over-the-top drama or (2) mistaking it for a eulogy.

I think you're right. It felt that they were very fond of reliving those moments, as well as basking in the preferential treatment they continued to receive from the film-makers as The Hobbit got underway. To be fair, most fandoms have a particular site that is favored with news and exclusive announcements by the creators of the original work, but I don't know if all of them result in such a pretentious culture. A lot of people on the forums, even those who had nothing to do with the running of the site, seemed very stuck-up about being on TORn (though I should stress that that is by no means true of everyone on those forums).

They may also have been sensitive to making Liv Tyler cry (don't know if that was TORN, but they would be aware of it). If I got that kind of special treatment it would be tempting to do the same.

Oh man, I'd forgotten about that. I could not believe the amount of guilt some people seemed to feel over that. I don't think that Liv Tyler specified where she'd read the comments that made her cry, but I can bet that the people who made it were not the over-eager fanboys who seemed to feel guilty for it a decade later. Everyone there seemed to take their relationship with the filmmakers deadly seriously to the point of stifling discussion. Back when GDT posted on their forums (oh man, the gloating over that) they had very strict rules about what you could say in threads he posted in. It was ridiculous, but I suppose you're right that any site would probably do the same.

TORN has some long standing members who are what I call Alpha Females (in their heads) and they have little friends that started yapping round my heels once I had got up the nose of the chief B****. I quite innocently posted a thread about the coming video blog saying something like I was impatient to see it, and one of the AFs said I was full of a nasty sense of entitlement. So I blasted the AF, like you do, and promptly had the yappers baying for blood, and then one of the mods warned me and gave me a slap on the wrist. That well and truly got my goat so I had another dig, then I posted some other thread and was given the supercilious high and mighty shit once again. So I told them exactly what I thought and was banned, it was the funniest thing, the mod was really a condescending little twat and I didnt last a week, even now I chuckle when I think of what I said about them.

Now I really wish that TORn didn't delete or edit all offending posts. I'd love to have read those exchanges.

Well, I'll just be ever so diplomatic and say that I am sure GDT appreciated the support. They don't sound like my kind of crowd though.

I have an incredible urge to join Torn and start a 'bring back Mrs Figg" thread. Also, get hold of those Alpha B****s and throw 'em all on a big bed with a floral eiderdown and show 'em that there are only Alpha Males and that Alpha Females are imaginary constructs (like unicorns), and then beat up on those folk who made Liv Tyler cry - the cowardly bastards! (Not that I'm naturally disposed to causing trouble, mind, and I would have to reinvent myself. ) (I might even go as an Alpha B**** Now that could be fun... )

I wasnt called Mrs Figg at TORN, and I noticed recently that most of their snotty comments were deleted too, its really odd cos it looks like I am talking to myself, maybe they realized it looked bad and they sanitized the joint. who knows. Dont care. Its really strange how they can get away with the snottytude, I have seen many newbies get the same treatment, I guess they weed out anyone with a backbone.

I had a similar experience on Dark Planet... The Christian thing would be to accept your mistakes, admit them, and take sensible instruction, but instead, like the Sanhedrin, they crucified me ---well, banned me at least. Not that I'm saying I'm a martyr or anything...

Everything's fine there, everything's nice (and Family Friendly) but it's largely a sham, which shows up if anyone begins to doubt them in any way, or ask pointed questions... I can't stand trying to get back into serious Tolkien debates after a long hiatus and immediately running into one of those people who is convinced they know everything about the topic and, when disagreed with, reject every bit of information that conflicts with their preconceived notions. Also, I'm sorry if I'm turning this into a "vent about Bree-land" thread. I love getting to have discussions with people like Kendalf, Jon, and others, even when we disagree. There's just a few people who fall into archetypes I saw waaaay too much of on larger forums and thought I had escaped.

I know exactly the discussion you are talking about, Eldo. What makes me crabbit is someone who doesn't seem to realize how much more beautiful Tolkien is outside the narrow sphere they have read. Though I have a hard time believing anything can be more fascinating than Unfinished Tales, the Glorfindel discussion is making me want to pick up that whole Christopher shelf I've been trying to avoid for fear of it swallowing me alive.
