You have a sister. And she went to Africa. Somehow I feel like Watson when Sherlock casually mentioned his brother in The Greek interpreter, Oh Lance those are awesome. My girl friend met her husband a geophysicist in Kenya and he often took pictures for National Geographic. He took one of his daughter Tanya when she was about one. They were somewhere where the beach was really white sand and a gorgeous really dark baby boy and she were nose to nose on their hands and knees, staring at one another because either one was a shock to the other. I miss those awesome pics.

Thanks Figgy. I am pretty sure I wont come close considering some of the entries in there. But thought I would give it a whirl.
Re: Just...................whatever [4]
Well you have awesome presentation and an eye for telling a good story thru the camera. I would love to see you do some on a gritty rainy day in the mean streets in black and white and maybe Tibet. I hope you will gain really good international exposure. When I was women's editor , I was so into the story, especially if I did free lance that my pics were HORRIBLE.
The publisher finally got me my own photographer. I hate that.

Always feel for the people of the bottom of the tower. Gotta have some serious leg and back muscles to be that person!

I love stuff like this, always gives me a weird sense of awe. A picture taken by a German astronaut on the ISS.
somewhere down there is me and everyone I know going about our little lives, whist far, far overhead in space a German is taking photos!

Interesting how the clouds form to the contour of the island. I wonder how that happens.

You get different convection over land than over water: soil surfaces heat up faster than water surfaces, so you get the cumulus fields we associate with a fair, partly cloudy day. You can see that the wind is from the east, so the clouds start out small then develop as they move inland. Note also the 'cloud streets': the clouds form in long rolls with spaces in between; this has to do with a strong wind gradient that make clouds 'lean' and so they spill over sideways rather than kill the cloud upwind of them. I have diagrams but would have to pull them out of the ppt I made so can't be arsed to do it right now. The upper level cirrus is not affected by any of this.
Sometimes you'll see lines of clouds just within the coast: this is the seabreeze effect where a circulation is set up between land and ocean, so a line of clouds form at the top of the circulation before it turns back to sea. Such circulations are destroyed when there is a prevailing wind such as in the ISS picture, but you can see the enhanced clouds limning the east coast of Florida in the image below (sorry about the green boundaries). Note that because of light winds you get no cloud streets.

Re: Just...................whatever [4]
Doesn't have to be hills and mountains, just land-sea contrast.
The mountains will sometimes form wave clouds, as seen in the lower left over England.

That's actually really interesting, Halfy. Thanks for posting it. I had been trying to figure out if those were clouds or snow and I thought they looked more like snow.
Looking forward to hearing all about your trip too!
