Indeed, I knew it was a war film, but the somewhat cutesy art direction of Studio Ghibli and music had given me a false impression.
At least there's a happy ending of sorts

I dunno if I'd go that far, even with the "of sorts" qualifier.
Certainly the most devastating "kids, respect your elders" film I've ever seen.

Re: Favorite Anime
Looks like a pretty accurate rendition of the Gaang's various travels. Quite cool. Though any attempt at showing that inevitably highlights the geographic inconsistencies in the Avatar world, but that's on the show, not the mapmaker.
Re: Favorite Anime
Yeah, obviously neither the world or the map is perfect. But it does really help in grasping their journey while watching and the series goes on.

Re: Favorite Anime
I think Howls' Moving Castle must be my favourtie Miyazaki film, it just has a feel all of it's own, the scenery is stunning, and I find the story odd, in a good way, and compelling. (I might even have a small crush on Sophie as a character.)
Also it gave birth to one of the best gifsets ever made.

I love that one too. For years I've called the fire in my woodstove "Calcifer", because life's just better when you've got a Fire Demon.

@Halfy It's basically a 24 word plot summary of Spirited Away, one of Miyzaki's most creative films. It's got internal logic rather like a dream. It makes sense when you're watching it, but don't even bother trying to describe it to anybody.

It's also a metaphor for child sex trafficking (maybe).

Interesting Eldo! I'm sure there's more than that I've missed. I guess that's a good excuse to watch it again sometime soon.

Re: Favorite Anime
I binged on NGE the past two days. Feel like they totally copped out on the ending. "Hey let's not show the Human Instrumentality Project. Let's just have everyone get fucking depressed!"
I really liked most of the show, but they were too slow to reveal details about what the heck was going on, and the whole mech aspect fell to the wayside near the end. Mostly good, liked the characters, but some big disappointments, too.
