He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me.
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

That's a great version of the song. Very Happy I hadn't heard it before.  John Brown's Body/The Battle Hymn of the Republic really sparked my interest in hymns and that sort of music, and rekindled my interest in folk music in general.  I also find it interesting that, for a song as fundamentally religious as this one, it was progressive almost to the point of radicalism for its time.  Goes to show that the relationship between religion and politics was not always as one-sided as it is now. :/

Well I had a reason to giggle at that.
And a trip to the grocery store gave me the chance to prove it.
((Havre = oat, in case there was any doubt.))

It's interesting, I only knew the first verse of the song:

"John Brown's Body lies a'mouldering in the grave...
... Glory, glory Hallelujah!..."

and always thought it was an anti-John Brown song which the Union turned on it's head. It's interesting to know the real truth of the song.  Smile

John Brown fascinates me as one of the most compelling characters in American history, but I can't say I'm exactly a fan. Killed some innocent people trying to foment rebellion in the territories before his raid on Harper's Ferry. He had a large influence on Frederick Douglas, who was smart enough to walk away when he saw a suicide mission in the making.

The music of Charles Ives really got me interested in hymns and patriotic tunes. Smile

Charles Ives is great. The Unanswered Question is iconic.

As much as I love Ives (and he is my second favorite dead composer), I'm not wild about The Unanswered Question.

But give me the fourth symphony any day.  Twisted Evil
