Re: the olympics
BTW, how did the Netherlands tie for second place in the winter olympics? No mountains, small country....

All of their medals have come from speed skating, but it's been enough to take them to the second place tie overall (so far).

I was gonna be super blown away Norway was dominating the Olympics, until I realized it was the winter Olympics. Of course.
Re: the olympics
guys.. not joking, i didn't notice the dude had cocked up the flags and names i thought the "one job" reference was to canada, that they should have most medals.. (i am so fucking stupid)
Re: the olympics
Just wanted to say that my friend Jason is currently in 6th place after the short program for figure skating and has a good chance at getting bronze! The people in 3rd, 4th, and 5th place are less that one point ahead of him!!!!!

Re: the olympics
Congrats to your friend Tin.
And now a crabbit Olympic rant!
Why do we bother with this hugely expensive event for stuff that arent even proper sports!
Going down a hill fasted lying on a teatray is not a sport!
Curling? Seriously- its just bowls for when the greens are frozen over, and they dont put bowls in the proper Olympics- why not? Because its the worlds most dull spectator sport thats why!
And skiing, thats not a sport its just a means of getting about in snowy countries and ski jumping is eve worse, shove someone down a hill where there is no choice but to fly of the end of it, thats not sport its stupidity!

Re: the olympics
Probably cause this is the only opportunity most of those sports will ever have to show off in front of a mainstream global audience. Same with stuff like water polo or handball at the Summer Games.
Plus I think the legacy of Victorian-era amateurism that contributed to the founding of the games perpetuates a bias against professional team sports and encourages people to preserve some of the more obscure stuff. Plus the team sports often have their own high-profile competitions that don't want to see competition from the Olympics, most famously with FIFA and all the restrictions they insisted the IOC put on Olympic soccer.

Re: the olympics
Ringo posted an article in norwegian over on the fjordlandia thread about the "Trønder effect." Him being a Trønder, I'm sure he won't mind it being bragged about a bit more. So here's the Wall Street Journal video the article was based on.

Re: the olympics
Some classic examples of "trøndersengelsk" (English spoken with the accent of the dialect in Trøndelag) in there I know a guy who attends the school they're talking about and showing pictures from, so that was fun to watch, thanks for sharing, Blue

Re: the olympics
There's certainly something about those people from Trøndelag.
Also I stumbled across this. Alan Davies making a Winter Olympic related program. Featuring a norwegian comdienne.

(Not sure I find her all that funny, but it has Allan Davies and Bill Bailey too.)
