I liked Boromir too as they didn't have time to completely screw him up- although they did manage to clumsily signpost his coming fall at every turn- the Galadirel "you know of whom I speak" rubbish being the worst of it, though Gandalfs "and from within too" outside Moria just as Boromir walks by them and Gandalf and Frodo eyeball him is a close second.

Re: Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More [3]
Yeah the foreshadowing there was pretty bad. But PJ also gave us Boromir and Aragorn's conversation in Lorien and "my brother, my captain, my king" which were both really good scenes. Also Boromir and Faramir's flashback in TTT-EE.
Re: Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More [3]
I have mixed feelings on the TT flashback scene- the stuff between Boromir and Faramir is good as its shows their releationship well, the stuff with Denethor is pretty bloody shit though.

Re: Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More [3]
Denethor's characterization is problematic throughout but that doesn't detract from Boromir being cool.
Re: Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More [3]
Its not the characterisation its the info he has about the Ring, the whole idea he has somehow been contacted by Elrond who is holding a meeting to discuss it- now either Elrond called the meeting long before Frodo set out from the Shire, which obviously he couldnt (in the films Frodo doesn't even know thats where he is going madly enough until Strider tells them thats where he is taking them) because Elrond didn't know he was going to be having a meeting then, or Boromir got from Minas Tirith to Rivendell by plane.

What was even worse was PJ's comment in the EE commentaries about the length of Boromir's journey.

Peter Jackson wrote:Sean Bean’s wearing his costume from ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ here, which is the linking component that I really like, that, you know, the first time we see him in ‘Fellowship’ is when he gallops in through the Rivendell gates and he’s wearing this same outfit; and this is him heading off on what would be a five-day journey between Osgiliath and Rivendell.
In the book Boromir's journey was 110 days. Five days is not very long to travel in a world where horse and foot are your only two options, but I rather suspect PJ has never stopped to think about the realities of medieval travel times.
Re: Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More [3]
You have to give it to Peter, he's a Tolkien expert all right.
But I guess it's not to bad for having read the book once 30 years ago..

I facepalmed so hard when I was first watching the EE commentaries and got to that part.

I guess that's the thing about fantasy adaptation. You have to accept that the jetpack was invented long before any sort of industrial revolution.

Reminded me of a post I cam across on Reddit, I don't totally agree with this, but I've always liked Boromir because he's haeadstrong, and a bit of a dick, more real and easy to picture in my minds eye, than flawless Aragorn striding around.

Re: Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More [3]
I kinda feel like that guy entirely missed the point of Aragorn. A lot of people do, because they're used to guys like Aragorn being the main character and getting to see inside their minds, which we don't in the book. But some of the statements about Aragorn are just utterly at odds with what we are explicitly told about the character, particularly the bit about him not actively fighting Sauron.
I don't think that movie Boromir is portrayed as weaker than the book version, either. He's magnanimous and loves his brother, and he fights bravely against the forces of Mordor. He appears to be a beloved commander. His gradual respect for Aragorn doesn't make him sycophantic or weak either. Actually it makes a lot of sense in light of some elements of the book that didn't make it into the films: particularly Faramir's recollection of his brother and father arguing about whether the Stewards should declare themselves Kings. The young Boromir argues for this position, his father rejects it. The reader can scoff at the notion that Gondor puts so much stock into this one royal bloodline, but if we try to think in the Gondorian cultural mindset based on what we know of it (keep in mind that they classify entire cultures based on whether their ancestors fought on the right side of a war, though they're willing to bend the categories as necessary) this hyper-focus is more understandable. In this context, Boromir's acceptance of Aragorn is in part him getting over his own (justifyably large) ego and accepting his place in the Numenorean worldview.
Again, you can argue that this is a stupid ideology and I wouldn't necessarily disagree with you, but to do so you're dealing with a lot bigger issues than Boromir's character traits.

Re: Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More [3]
I think Sean Bean nailed the conflicts going on in Boromirs head. His first loyalty was Gondor and only slowly did he realizes Aragorns worth and accept him as once and future king. he was pretty egotistical (but not for personal glory but for his land) and that's what lead to his downfall, but his innate nobility saved him at the end. I think this was well done in the film.

A bit like Viggo I feel Sean put more into the script with performance than the script bothered with.
