The sight of PJ's face is enough to induce crabbit in me. I don't need to hear him spout outrageous nonsense

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
He's read SOMETHING as he mentioned "cash grab", his opening statements were diplomatic enough to admit he's not keeping true to the Hobbit but not enough to be sued on any difinitive words. He still says fooking SSSSCCCCCCHHHHHHMAUG ! Who the f**k is after the gold ? apart from Smaug ? Thorin maybe but who else ? Cant he speak with anyone else apart from Fran & Phillipa over ideas ?? "The Three Fooking stooges"!. Thumbs up to the German interviewer, I sensed he wasnt happy about things & was biting his German lip

Agreed. I never had a doubt that Beorn would appear in these films, but if they were going for a shorter run time he'd be an obvious choice to cut. And it doesn't sound like he really has much to do in this film other than earning a check mark on the list of things people expect to see in The Hobbit. That's never a good criteria to use when deciding what to keep from the book.
Radaghast wrote:I got the impression that the omission of Bombadil was not a big deal, but I could be wrong.
It never bothered me, but there are some people who still complain about it. It's largely passed into the realm of stereotypes about angry purists though.

I made an entire thread about to be crabbit/gloat about his admission that he's not really make The Hobbit.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
If there's one thing that bothered me about the lack of Bombadil it's that it also means the lack of Barrow-wights and, thus, one more thing to knock of the list of heroic things that Frodo does. But I'm of a mind that Jackson would have wussified Frodo in this scene even if he had included it.Eldorion wrote:Radaghast wrote:I got the impression that the omission of Bombadil was not a big deal, but I could be wrong.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Yeah very important character beat for Frodo that- its arguably his first big test and he has an easy out- put on the Ring and escape leaving his friends, which he briefly considers.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
The more I think of it, the more I think how it wasn't really necessary to have Bombadil to have the Barrow-wights. But, again, this is PJ we're talking about: i.e. absolutely no heroism by Frodo allowed.

Everything is emphasized, and so nothing has emphasis. Everything is pumped full of importance, and so nothing has importance. Meanwhile, the balance between action and character in the book is lost.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
There's nothing really to hold onto now. I'd quote TTT by saying "There's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for!" but I think that was a Boyens brainchild so I'm loath to use it.
A part of me wonders if we should stand up and fight instead of rolling over and moaning. Yeah, there's very little we can do at this point, but didn't it seem hopeless to Frodo and Sam, too? Wouldn't Tolkien want us to learn that there is always hope and there is always a chance to change our world? We could and should start a petition. Present an argument that is both well informed and respectful, letting him know just how much he's hurt fans! So then at the very least he can apologize!
Well, that was my hopeful streak. I think it's like a lightbulb that you turn on that has too much power so it immediately explodes. That's what my hope is like.

Yeah, that's my feeling too. If everything is action, action becomes mundane.bungobaggins wrote:http://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/The-Hobbit-The-Desolation-of-Smaug-review-5058691.phpEverything is emphasized, and so nothing has emphasis. And you know Legolas and Tauriel are going to kill everything they touch and nothing will lay a finger on them, so who the fuck gives a shit?

You can watch the first hour, then demand a refund. I've heard that actually works in some places

Another astute review:
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/b607a618-6336-11e3-a87d-00144feabdc0.html#ixzz2nIe8IWSF
As Jackson piles on backstory and boring plot explication and even a romance between a pretty elf and a handsome dwarf in an attempt to pad things out and build consistency, you begin to realise that he doesn’t at heart believe in Bilbo’s little tale. Martin Freeman as Bilbo is perfect, but he’s a butterfly directed by a sledgehammer; Richard Armitage as Thorin has been trussed into a one-note straitjacket.
