Oh that march... Mixed emotions... Played it quite a few times this year, last year, the year before that... etc.
Gammel Jegermarsj Old hunter's march. Many many MANY moons ago there was an marching band gathering event thing in Røros where we all marched in a long long parade and took turns in playing that march over and over and over.... and got in the Guinness book of records.

I do despair a little at people claiming the 17th of May has anything to do with our actual independence from Sweeden. As norc says we celebrate it, but the actual independence didn't happen for another 91 years and then on the 7th of June.

it's so weird that we don't celebrate on the 7th of june, like it would make moew sense for the russ (as we now celebrate as fuck BEFORE exams) and the weather should be overall better on the 7th of june..

Yeah, I guess it's one of those paradoxes of history.

We did have a couple of months of independence in 1814, although with the danish Crown Prince as head of state, which would have led to us ending up in the same kind of monarchic union as we did with Sweeden anyway. And we did keep our constitution for the for the entier time, which limited the Union to one of monarchies where the Sweedish handled the foreign policy.

The celebration kind of grew up during those 91 years, mostly because the Sweedish tried to suppress it, so that when we got actual independence the 17th of May was already established as the National Day.

Though none of that precludes one from celebrating on the 7th of June as well, I guess. Wink

they probably did an exhange-year in the UK or something. i know someone who did that and she has the most posh accent ever. i also know two people who were in america and they are like native Rolling Eyes

Apparently it's a bit of a special time, with the aurora returning while you still have the light from the sunset, allowing you to get pictures like this.
