The norwegian constitution is going to be on display for the first time since 1987 in the event of it's 200 year anniversary.
That's the May constitution of course, not the November one that we are actually using.

Wait, the Norwegian constitution is as old as America's? I had no idea.

Yours is older - ours is from 1814. Not sure why it was on display in 1987?

Yes. A bit later of course, and it took a lot of inspiration from both the French and American constitutions.
It was written a bit in haste in May 1814 as an attempt to declare Norway independent after the Napoleonic wars. When Norway was forced into a Union with Sweeden later in the year, they had to rewrite it slightly to allow for the Union. That was the November constitution.
It was actually written in such haste that there weren't time to hold elections and send representative from the north of Norway.

Sorry, it was in 1989 for it's 175th year anniversary apparently.

It's always a good idea to have an spare constitution around in case a moose eats the one you're using!

I see more roe deer around here, but true true.
The first article of the May constitution was actually something to the effect of "Norway is a free and undividable nation.." So safe to say that had to be changed to allow the Union.

Poor Norway getting kicked around by the Danes and Swedes.
But congrats on the Constitution (and eventual independence)!

I can imagine what communications in the north must have been like before the Hurtigruten, and even before steam ships. It would almost be like living on Mars.
No wait, communications with Mars would probably be faster!

there is a reason it says "light the beacons" on my russekort (fake business cards in celebration of graduation) in stead of a phone number

That's probably why your constitution has lasted so long!

Moose has the digestion, reindeer would choke.

So you managed to cram a Lord of the Rings reference, northern Norwegian history and something amusing to say if someone ask you for your phone number into three words? Not bad.
I was so unorganized about all that I didn't even get around to ordering Russekort.

yepp, lots of text on my russekort..

Yeah, it seems a bit silly in hindsight. But I'm not sure I would have come up with anything that interesting anyway.
Yours look nice though. And I love that Bilbo quote. That's what I would show anyone claiming Tolkien wasn't funny anyway.
