The European sprat, Sprattus sprattus, also known as bristling, brisling or skipper, is a small, herring-like, marine fish.

I literally caught handfuls of sprat once as a kid. They were right into the shore in their thousands, chased in by a large mackerel shoal.
We literally stood knee deep in the water and threw hand fulls of the buggers straight out onto the shore. I must have went home with 100+ of the little silver buggers, hands coated in fish scales.

We're getting three more chickens next week to bring our total up to six (one of the ones from last year got eaten by a fox or a dog), and even though the chicken coop and run was built to house up to eight, there has been discussion of expanding it to give them more room since letting them have the run of the back yard didn't work out (they always escaped). My mom posted a link to some photos of luxury coops that I'm not sure we'll be able to match though. Laughing

Our chicken's coop is probably about the same size as the one in the first photo (though it doesn't have the pretty paint job), but the run is only about half the size (maybe slightly more). The coop is on stilts though so they can get underneath like the one above, though.

I don't think I'd have any luck convincing my dad to build a stone coop but it is really cool. Laughing

Judging by the number of books about chickens we have at work I think it's less a matter of people "still" keeping chickens and more suburbanites taking it up as a hobby/pet thing.

That may well be true Eldo. Touch of the Good Life (excellent 70's UK sitcom about two middle class suburbanites who decide to give up the world of work and business to go green, much to the horror of their snobbish neighbours)-

Sin- is that pool easy to keep clean? Never kept ducks but I know with our chickens they aint the cleanest of creatures, tend to traipse through everything and drag it everywhere with them.

When we were letting the chickens have the run of the back yard they made a complete mess of it (and the deck, which they kept climbing up on). It got to the point where you had to dedicate a separate pair of shoes strictly for backyard stuff cause there was so much shit everywhere. That's part of the reason we stopped letting them out so much.

we let ours free range occasionally till today when I cam home and found one of our ducks with a bullet hole through her side. Not sure who did it but if I find them they'll be lucky not to have a bullet hole in their side. (duck is still alive for now, were trying to save her but don't know if she will make it
